What is CE Marking ?

It consists of the letters CE in the form shown

above
It symbolises the conformity of the appliance with
the applicable Community requirements imposed
on the manufacturer

Principles of CE Marking
The CE marking affixed to appliance is a visible
declaration by the person responsible (the
manufacturer, the authorised representative, etc)
that :
the appliance conforms to all applicable Community
provisions,
the appropriate conformity assessment procedures
have been completed.

Appliances to be CE marked
CE Marking is not an option, it is mandatory :
It must be affixed before any product subject to it is
placed on the market and put into service
A product may not be CE marked, unless it is
covered by a directive providing for its affixing

A product that is not CE marked is automatically

considered to be non-compliant

The Law
The law is enforced through market surveillance
by appointed national enforcement agencies.
Imported products are checked for compliance at
customs offices.

Free circulation
Products bearing the mark will be taken as
meeting the requirements
and thereby entitled to free circulation throughout
the European Economic Area
provided that the equipment does in fact satisfy
those requirements

CE marking requirements :
The CE marking must take the form below:

The proportions given in the graduated drawing

must be respected
The two letters of the CE marking must have the
same size : > 5mm.

Affixing CE marking
The CE marking must be affixed by the
manufacturer, or by the authorised representative
established within the Community
The CE marking should be affixed visibly, legibly
and indelibly
Where affixed on the appliance, it may be on the
product itself or on a plate attached to it

Affixing CE marking
Where a notified body is involved in the production
control phase according to the applicable directives, its
Identification number must follow the CE marking.
The manufacturer or the authorized representative
established in the Community affixes the identification
number, under the responsibility of the notified body.

Affixing CE marking

It shall be affixed either on the product,

or on the packaging, and for small
product and product in small parts, on
the packaging, or on a label, or in a
leaflet.

Products subject to several directives

Where products are subject to several directives,
which all provide for the affixing of the CE
marking, the marking indicates that the products
are presumed to conform to the provisions of all
these directives

CE marking & other marks

A product may bear additional markings and
marks, provided that they:
fulfill a different function from that of the CE marking
are not liable to cause confusion with CE marking
do not reduce legibility and visibility of CE marking

CE marking & other marks

A CE marking is the only marking which
symbolizes Conformity to all the obligations
incumbent on manufacturers for the product as
required by the applicable directives providing for
its affixing

Manufacturers Obligations
Determine which Directives apply
Comply with the requirements of all applicable
directives
EC-Type Examination and Production monitoring
(or EC Unit Verification)
Draw up EC Declaration of Conformity
Establish Technical Documentation which must
enable the conformity of the gas appliance and
cover the design, manufacture and operation
Affix the CE Marking on conforming products
Maintain the required documentation as evidence
of compliance

Cost of non compliance

The person responsible is obliged to bring the
appliance into conformity
Appliance can be stopped at customs and
prevented from entering Europe
If previously placed on the market, product can
be withdrawn
Could result in loss of reputation and bad
publicity for the manufacturer
