Referencing Peer Reviewed Studies


Northcentral University has support resources to assist a doctoral student writing a dissertation
mandatory to receive a doctoral degree. The resources students should read and become familiar with

the syllabus, Writing Center, Academic Integrity Policy, and the Dissertation Center. The syllabus
gives a student an overview of what to anticipate in each course while working toward a doctoral
degree. An important part of the syllabus is the grading rubric. The academic content is 70% of the
grading rubric and 30% is the APA writing format (Syllabus of Advanced Scholarly Writing, 2014).
The grade rubric expresses the importance to learn the APA style of writing. Other resources including
the Writing Center offer support materials to assist students in the construction of scholarly writing.
The Academic Success Center offers resources such as the Writing Center. Doctoral students
receive knowledge about the American Psychological Association format and style of writing to
develop better skills in scholarly writing. (Northcentral University Academic Success Center, 2014).
The Writing Center offers other resources such as coaching, grammar check, and the universitys
academic integrity (Northcentral University Academic Success Center, 2014). The Academic Integrity
Policy identifies unacceptable scholarly writing including plagiarism or falsifying research information
(Northcentral University Academic Integrity Policy (2014) & Academic Integrity Tutorial, 2014). The
use of the American Psychology Association manual gives a student easy access to check the correct
form and style to use in writing (APA, 2010).
The Dissertation Center has an important handbook for doctoral students to read and apply
when writing a dissertation. The center explains the difference between a D.B.A (doctoral) and Ph.D.
degree. According to the handout the two main differences is the scope and significance of the
dissertation (Northcentral University Dissertation Center, 2014). Northcentral University has a vast
amount of resources for the doctoral candidate to create scholarly writings. Another important
resources is the use of the library to research and find scholarly peer reviewed articles to use in
scholarly writing.
The Northcentral University Library offers many databases to research. Using the
library search, a student should narrow as much as possible the search. By checking the full text and

scholarly peer review boxes, your research will contain more peer review journals and other scholarly
sources (Northcentral University Library, 2014). To verify the article is peer review, students should
check the journal site to check and ensure the article is a scholarly peer review journal or other sources.
Part of this weeks course assignment is to research the keywords organizational leadership and study.
The Northcentral University Library has a vast database. Two excellent sources are the ProQuest and
EBSCOhost. Researching in ProQuest, a number of peer review articles found were of interest. Three
articles were chosen to use in future classroom writing activities. The title of the articles include
Relationship between organizational leadership capability and job satisfaction: Exploratory study in
the small-sized IT service organization in Estonia1 (Kivipld & Ahonen, 2013); Dispelling the myths
of organizational leadership (Timmerman, 2010); and Steer clear of organizational leadership
turbulence (Pontefract, 2012). Another excellent database to search is the EBSCOhost.
The EBSCOhost is an extensive database and had many articles on Organizational
Leadership. However, the majority were not within five years to consider as current. Three articles
were selected from the EBSCOhost database: An Empirical Study of the Relationship between
Transformational Leadership, Empowerment and Organizational Commitment (Mohamed, Sulaiman,
Mohamad, & Yusuf (2011); AGILity and the organization: Sense-making for organizational
leadership (Torres, 2013); and Relationship between leadership styles and dimensions of employee
organizational commitment: A critical review and discussion of future directions (Keskes, 2014). To
complete the research, the article by Van Wart (2013), Lessons from leadership theory and the
contemporary challenges of leaders was added to the research selections. The wide range of research
articles allows more areas to consider when using the data to create future scholarly writing.
