Applied Technology High School / Secondary Technical School

Academic Year 2014-2015

2014, Instructional Technology Department, Applied Technology High School Directorate.

The Purpose of this booklet is to inform stakeholders about the rationale behind the iPad
inclusion in our schools e-learning paradigm. This document will also explain how
students are expected to use the device inside and outside the school to enhance their
engagement in learning. In addition, descriptions about the provided professional apps
will be included at the end.

Why the iPad?

Technology is becoming more and more integrated into our society, which has changed
the way people conduct their daily lives including how knowledge is digested in the
classrooms. Technology integration encourages teachers to enhance student learning,
engage students in the learning process and share resources. It also provides students
with access to valuable information anytime and anywhere.
Our schools provide endless opportunities to students and teachers to go beyond the
classroom and build personalized learning experiences. With iPads in the classroom,
every lesson is brought to life through using state-of-the-art tools, apps and content that
are geared just for education. Teachers can develop their own interactive materials,
communicate with their students in real time, promote collaborative work in the
classroom, and effectively assess students work. Consequently, learning will be more
engaging and memorable to students who are encouraged to use their iPads to construct
knowledge and develop interactive materials as part of their course assignments and
school projects.
The iPad is so easy to use and students get familiar with it in no time. It is the familiarity
and richness of the supporting educational apps that makes the iPad the mobile device of
choice. Students have demonstrated their satisfaction with their iPads through different
surveys in previous years.

We began integrating technology into the

classroom in 2009 through a program we call
One-to-One E-learning Solution. At that time, the
Apple MacBook Pro was the only device given to
students once they joined our schools. The iPad
was first introduced in 2012 with a goal of
improving students learning. All students who join
our schools receive the latest high-specs iPad. They
will also receive a MacBook Pro once they pass the
year and go to the next grade. This year, students
will receive the latest iPad Air 64GB model in
addition to a set of 23 paid apps. Students will need
to use their Apple ID in order to download these
specific apps into their account. Students are
supposed to use their apps in the different subjects
until they graduate in Grade 12.

Technology Integration in the Curriculum

Our educational standards in the curriculum are supported by the use of technology across all subjects.
Among other technologies, the iPad is used as a tool to facilitate students learning and extend it in ways
previously thought impossible. We believe that iPads can help students achieve more learning outcomes
through active engagement and increased enjoyment.
Students are required to bring their iPads to school fully charged every day. They also need to download
the schools apps as soon as they receive their iPads in order to be prepared for the new academic year.
