1.a) Define motion and state its types. Distinguish between completely constrained,
partially constrained and incompletely constrained motions. Where do you find
their applications?
b) What is meant by degrees of freedom of a mechanism? [12+4]

2.a) What are straight line motion mechanisms? Name the different types of mechanisms
used for straight line motion.
b) Sketch the Peaucellier straight line motion and prove that the tracing point ‘P’
describes a straight line path. [4+12]

3. The dimensions of various links of a mechanism as shown in figure are as follows:

OA = 80mm; AC = CB=CD=120 mm. If the crank OA rotates at 150 r.p.m. in the
anticlockwise, direction, find for the give configuration.
a) Velocity and acceleration of B and D
b) Rubbing velocity on the pin at C, if its diameter is 20 mm and
c) Angular acceleration of links AB and CD. [16]

4. The lengths of various links of a mechanism as shown in Figure are; OA = 0.3m;

AB = 1m; CD = 0.8 m; and AC = CB. Determine, for the given configuration,
velocity of slider D if the crank OA rotates at 60 r.p.m in the clockwise direction.
Also find the angular velocity of the link CD. Use instantaneous centre method.[16]
5. A Hooke's joint connects two shafts axes out of line by 25o the driving shaft runs at
uniform speed of 150 rpm. The driven shaft has attached a mass of 200 kg at radius
of gyration 150 mm. If a steady torque of 500 N-m resists the rotation of the driven
shaft, calculate
(a) The torque required at driving shaft when θ=450 and
(b) Maximum angular acceleration of the driven shaft. [16]

6. Design a cam for operating the exhaust valve of an oil engine. It is required to give
S.H.M during opening and closing of the valve each of which corresponds to 600 of
cam rotation. The valve must remain in fully open position for 200 of cam rotation.
The lift of the valve is 36 m.m and the least radius of the cam is 50 m.m. The
follower is provided with a roller of 40 m.m diameter and its line of stroke passes
through the axis of the cam. Find the maximum velocity and acceleration of the
follower during opening and closing periods for a cam shaft speed of 240 R.P.M.
[16]
7.a) Name the four important system of gear teeth that are commonly used? What is a
stub tooth and where is it used?
b) Find the minimum number of teeth to avoid undercutting when the addendum for
stub teeth is 0.84 module and the power component is 0.95 times the normal thrust,
if
i) The gear ratio is unity
ii) The gear ratio is 3 to 1. In each case, find the length of arc of contact in
terms of module. [16]

8. An epicyclic train is composed on a fixed annular wheel having 150 teeth. Meshing
with A is a wheel B which drives wheel D through and idle wheel C, D being
concentric with A. Wheels B and C are carried on an arm which revolves clockwise
at 100 rpm about the axis of A and D. If the wheels B and D have 25 and 40 teeth
respectively find the number of teeth on C and the speed and sense of rotation of C.
