1.a] Prove that the sum of the normal stresses on any set of two perpendicular planes
at a point in a strained body is constant.
b] At a point in a strained material, on a plane BC, there are normal and shear
stresses of values -60MPa and -20Mpa respectively. On another plane AC,
perpendicular to plane BC, there are normal and shear stresses of values +30MPa
and +20MPa respectively. Determine
(i) Magnitude of principle stresses
(ii) Principal of angles w.r.t plane BC,
(iii) Maximum shear stress,
(iv) Direction of plane of maximum shear w.r.t plane BC. [8+8]

2.a] What assumptions are taken while deriving torsion formula for a circular shaft?
b] A circular steel shaft is transmitting 20 horse power at 300 r.p.m. Determine the
diameter of the shaft if the maximum shear stress in shaft is not to exceed 80
N/mm2 and angular twist per meter length of the shaft is not be exceed 1°. Given
G = 80 kN/mm2. [8+8]

3.a] What are the assumptions taken while developing Euler’s theory for buckling of
long columns? What are the different end conditions for columns under buckling?
b] A 40 cm x14 cm RSJ is used as a strut with hinged ends, having 6 m length.
Using the Perry's formula, determine the safe load if
i) Eccentricity along XX axis is 24 mm,
ii) Maximum allowable compressive stress is 75 MPa, For the joist, area of
cross-section is 78.46 cm2, lxx = 20458.4cm4, lyy = 622.1 cm4,
E = 210kN/mm2. [8+8]

4.a] What do you understand by beam-columns


b] A horizontal strut of length L, having hinged ends, carries an axial compressive
load P, and central vertical load W. Derive expression for maximum values of
deflection, B.M and stress. [8+8]

5.a] Consider a column subjected to an eccentric load and draw stress distribution
along the axis, along which eccentric load is applied.
b] A short hollow cylindrical column carries a compressive force of 400 kN. The
external diameter of the column is 200 mm and the internal diameter is 120 mm.
Find the maximum permissible eccentricity of the load if the allowable stresses
are 60 MPa in compression and 25 MPa in tension. [8+8]
6.a] Explain the graphical method for locating principle axes using Mohr Circle
method.
b] Determine the principal moments of inertia for an unequal L - angle section
60 mm x 40 mm x 6 mm. [8+8]

7. A semi-circular beam of radius R, is supported on 3 equally spaced columns. If W


is the load per unit length of the beam, derive expressions for B.M and twisting
moments at any point P and hence at supports. [16]

8.a] Discuss the method of joints procedure for solving forces in the trusses, and its
limitations.
b] Explain the method of sections procedure for solving forces in the trusses, and its
limitations. [8+8]

1. Normal and shear stresses are given on two perpendicular planes. Explain
graphical method to determine principle stresses, principal angles and stresses on
an inclined plane. [16]

2.a] Make a neat sketch of a circular shaft subjected to a twisting moment. Show
clearly the variation of shear angle, angle of twist and shear stress in shaft. Derive
the torsion formula.
b] A hollow circular steel shaft is required to transmit 300 metric horse power at 200
r.p.m. The maximum torque developed is 1.5 times the mean torque. Determine
the external diameter of the shaft if it is double the internal diameter and the
maximum shear stress is not to exceed 80 MPa. Given G = 82 kN/mm2. [8+8]

3.a] Derive an expression for Euler’s buckling load for a column with both the ends
hinged.
b] A 2.5 m length of tube has a crippling load of 1.1 kN, when used as a strut with
pin jointed ends. Calculate the crippling load for a 3 m length of the same tube
when used as a strut with
(i) both the ends fixed,
(ii) one end is fixed and the other end is hinged. [8+8]

4. A horizontal strut 3m long is of-hollow circular section 16cm external dia. and
internal dia. 14cm. It carries an end thrust of 300kN along with a u.d.l of 5kN/m.
Assuming the ends as hinged and taking the self weight also into account,
calculate the max. stress induced in the section (Density = 78.bkN/m3). [16]

5.a] A column of rectangular section carries a vertical load P eccentric to both the axes
XX’, YY’. Determine resultant stresses at the four corners of the rectangular
section.
b] A 10 m high brick masonry wall of rectangular section 4 m x 1.5 m is subjected to
horizontal wind pressure of 15 N/mm2 on the 4 m side. Find the maximum and
minimum stress intensities induced in the base. Weight density of masonry is
22 kN/m3. [8+8]

6.a] Explain the graphical method for locating principle axes using Mohr Circle

b] Determine the principal moments of inertia for an unequal L - angle section
80 mm x 60 mm x 8 mm. [8+8]

b] A circular beam is loaded uniformly and supported symmetrically placed

S.F B.M and tossional moment at a point P. at an angle φ from one

effective length is 2 m. If a horizontal force of 400 N at the top produces a

22 kN/m2 of the projected area. Calculate the overturning moment at the base. If
the weight of the chimney is 6000 kN and the internal diameter at the base is 1.2
m, determine the maximum and minimum stress intensities at the base. [16]

50 mm X 30 mm X 4 mm. [8+8]

2.a] How much horse power is transmitted by a shaft subjected to torque T and
running at N rpm?. What maximum shear stress is developed in solid and hollow
shafts?
b] A circular shaft of 25 mm diameter is tested under torsion. The gauge length of
test specimen is 250 mm. A torque of 212 Nm produces an angular twist of 1° in
the shaft. Determine the modulus of rigidity of the shaft. [8+8]

3.a] Derive an expression for Euler’s buckling load for a column with both the ends
fixed.
b] A 325 X165 mm RS Joist is used as a strut, 6 m long, one end fixed and the other
hinged. Calculate the crippling load by Rankine's formula. Compare this with the
load obtained by Euler's formula. For what length of this strut will the two
formulae give the same crippling load? For the joist, area of the section, A= 54.9
cm2, Ixx = 9874.6cm2, Iyy = 510.8 cm4, for steel, E = 210kN/mm2, fc=330 N/mm2,
and Rankine's constant, (for both the ends hinged). [8+8]
