1 (a) What is interference of light? What are the conditions necessary for obtaining
interference fringes?
(b) Derive an expression for the radius of the nth bright ring in the case of Newton’s
rings. Explain why the center of the Newton’s rings is dark in the reflected
system?
(c) The diameter of the tenth bright ring in a Newton’s rings experiment changes
from1.40 cm to 1.27 cm when a liquid is introduced between the lens and plate.
Find the refractive index of the liquid. [4+8+4]

2 (a) Explain the different methods by which ultrasonics can be generated.


(b) Discuss the important physical properties of ultrasonic waves.
(c) The velocity of an ultrasonic beam in a medium is 350 m/sec. If the frequency
is 5 MHz, find wavelength of the beam. [8+6+2]

3 (a) Explain the terms: (i) magnetic induction, (ii) magnetic susceptibility,
(iii) permeability of a medium and (iv) intensity of magnetization.
(b) What is hysterisis curve? Explain.
(c) A magnetic material has a magnetization of 3300 amp/m, and flux density of
0.0044 weber/sq.m. Calculate the magnetizing force and the relative permeability
of the material. [6+6+4]

4 (a) Explain the terms used in crystallography: (i) primitive cell, (ii) lattice parameters
and (iii) packing factor.
(b) Derive an expression for the interplanar spacing in the case of a cubic structure.
(c) X-rays of wavelength of 0.155 nm are diffracted by (1 1 1 ) planes in a crystal
at an angle of 30° in the first order. Calculate the inter atomic spacing. [4+8+4]

5 (a) Explain the various pumping mechanisms that are adopted in lasers.
(b) Discuss the essential features of a laser beam.
(c) Explain the uses of lasers in industry and medical fields. [6+4+6]

6 (a) Derive the expressions for (i) acceptance angle and (ii) numerical aperture of an
optical fiber.
(b) Describe different types of fibers by giving the refractive index profiles and
propagation details. [8+8]

7 (a) Describe various mechanisms of electric polarization in a dielectric medium.


(b) Distinguish between ferroelectric materials and piezoelectric materials. [8+8]

8 (a) What are nanomaterials? Why do they exhibit different properties?


(b) What are carbon nanotubes? Describe the methods of production of various types

1 (a) What is the difference between polarized and unpolarized light?


(b) Describe, in detail, the different methods to produce polarized light.
(c) Describe the construction of a nicol prism. [2+8+6]

2 (a) Write the properties of ultrasonic waves.


(b) What is piezoelectric effect? Explain with neat sketch the construction and
production of ultrasonic waves using piezoelectric oscillator.
(c) For a quartz crystal of length 0.05 m, calculate the fundamental frequency of
oscillation in a piezoelectric oscillator if the velocity of longitudinal waves in the
crystal is 5.5 km/sec. [4+8+4]

3 (a) What is Meissner effect? Explain.


(b) Describe the difference between Type-I and Type-II superconductors.
(c) The critical field for niobium is 1 × 105 amp/m at 8 K and 2 × 105 amp/m at absolute
zero. Find the transition temperature of the element. [6+6+4]

4 (a) What do you understand by Miller indices of a crystal plane?


(b) Show that in a cubic crystal the spacing between consecutive parallel planes of
Miller indices (h k l) is given by d = a (h2 + k2 + l2)-1/2
(c) NaCl crystals have FCC structure. The density of NaCl is 2.18 gm/cm2. Calculate
the distance between two adjacent atoms. (Molecular weight of NaCl = 58.5)

5 (a) Distinguish between spontaneous emission of radiation and stimulated emission of


radiation.
(b) Explain the following terms: (i) population inversion and (ii) pumping.

(iii) step index fiber and (iv) graded index fiber.

1 (a) Explain the terms (i) constructive interference and (ii) destructive interference.
(b) Derive the condition for the maxima and minima in the Young’s experiment.
(c) When the Young’s experiment was done with blue light of 436 nm, the distance
between two successive dark fringes was found to be 1.05 mm. If the distance
between the sources and the screen is 1.40 m, calculate the distance between the
two slits. [5+7+4]

2 (a) Define the term ‘reverberation’? What is reverberation time?


(b) Describe any two methods by which the sound absorption coefficient of a material
can be determined.
(c) A hall of volume 85000 m3 is found to have a reverberation time of 2.2 sec. If
the area of the sound absorbing surface is 7500 m2, calculate the average sound
absorption coefficient. [4+8+4]

3 (a) Explain the terms (i) magnetic flux density, (ii) magnetic field strength,
(iii) magnetization and (iv) magnetic susceptibility. How they are related to each
other?
(b) What are hard and soft magnetic materials? Give their characteristic properties
and applications.
(c) A paramagnetic material has a magnetic field intensity of 104 amp/m. If the
susceptibility of the material at room temperature is 3.7 × 10-3. Calculate the
magnetization and flux density of the material. [6+6+4]

4 (a) Describe, in detail, the three-dimensional Bravais lattices.


(b) What is Bragg’s law of X-ray diffraction? Explain. [10+6]

5 (a) Write a brief notes on ‘Einstein’s coefficients’.

He-Ne laser?
