The torque converter (2) connects the engine to the transmission. This connection between the engine and the
transmission is a hydraulic connection. There is no direct mechanical connection between the engine and the
transmission.
The torque converter (2) is welded into one piece and the torque converter cannot be opened up. The following

components are inside the torque converter:

Stator (7)

Turbine (8)

Impeller (9)

The torque converter uses oil to send torque from the engine to the transmission. When the machine is working
against a load, the torque converter multiplies the torque from the engine and the torque converter sends a
higher torque to the transmission.
The oil for the operation of the torque converter comes from the oil pump for the transmission. The oil pump is
driven by gear (4). The oil flows to a flow control valve in the transmission case and the oil flow is divided.
Oil is directed to the transmission circuit and to the torque converter circuit. The torque converter inlet oil
pressure is controlled by the torque converter inlet relief valve. The converter inlet relief valve is mounted in
the transmission case below the transmission control valve. The relief valve limits the maximum pressure to
the torque converter to 895 kPa (130 psi). The inlet relief valve for the torque converter protects the torque
converter from high pressure. High pressure is due to cold oil or some other restriction in the torque converter
or some other restriction in the cooler circuit.
The flex plate (1) is mounted to the engine flywheel. The flex plate (1) is also mounted to the torque converter
(2). The impeller (9) is connected to the inside of the torque converter. The stator support (5) slides over the
input shaft (6). The turbine (8) connects to the input shaft (6).
The stator (7) connects to the stator support (5). The stator support (5) is mounted to the transmission case and
the stator does not turn.
The teeth on gear (4) mesh with the splines on the torque converter. The gear (4) meshes with the gear (3) for
the oil pump.
Oil from the hydraulic controls of the transmission flows into the torque converter. The rotation of the impeller
gives force to the oil.
The impeller (9) turns with the rotating housing of the torque converter (2) at engine speed. The impeller (9)
causes the oil to go to the outside of the impeller. The oil goes around the inside of the housing and against the
blades of the turbine (8). The force of the oil that hits the turbine blades causes the turbine to turn. This sends
torque to the input shaft (6) of the transmission.
After the oil hits the turbine blades, the oil goes toward the inside of the turbine (8). The oil from the turbine
moves in a direction opposite the rotation of the impeller (9). The stator (7) causes the oil to change direction.
The stator causes the oil to go back into the impeller (9) in the direction of rotation.
The force of the oil from the stator (7) can now add to the torque output. This extra force can give an increase
to the torque output of the engine to the turbine. The amount of force of the oil from the stator is the larger
difference between the speeds of the impeller (9) and the turbine (8) .
The difference in the speed of the impeller (9) and the speed of the turbine (8) is because of the load on the
machine. When the torque converter is at the stall condition, the torque multiplication of the torque converter
is at the maximum. Oil that is from the outlet passage flows to the converter outlet relief valve. The oil then
flows to the oil cooler and to the transmission lubrication system.
