Letters from our readers

Thanks for the help

I received my first copy of

Crochet! magazine, the September
2007 issue, and read it cover to
cover. I was veryexcited about the
article, Great Crochet: Simple
Tips to Make it Happen, Part 2.
I learned to crochet about 34 years
ago, and I am sure my lessons
didnt include how to get a more
consistent and even stitch.
I was in the middle of a filet
pattern when I read this article,
and I started watching how I did
my stitches.I saw that there was
unevenness in the way that I was
working them.On my next filet
piece I made sure to put into practice what I had read in your article.
I am so excited that I can already
see the difference it is making!
Thank you for addressing this
subject.I cant wait to see what you
have to teach me with future issues.
Gina D., via e-mail

Sweet dreams

I just wanted to tell you that

I enjoy your magazine so much,
and I love the variety of patterns
that it offers. I instantly fell in love
with the Sweet Dreams bunting
set in the September 2007 issue.

How to Contact Us

I am making the blanket in a soft

baby yellow. I love how easy it is
to follow the pattern instructions.
Thank you so much for putting together a wonderful magazine. I look forward to each issue!

Amanda, Montreal, Quebec

The itch to stitch

I just think that Crochet! is the

most wonderful magazine.There
are projects that appeal to such a
wide variety of sizes, tastes and
styles for both fashion and fun.
I think you really outdid yourself with the September 2007
issue.Im itching to make everything in it. This is when I am
very happy about my YAS (yarn
acquisition syndrome)I can start
on several projects right away! My
cats, in particular, thank you for
the Kitty Cuddler pattern.
Thanks for a nicely edited and
wonderfully diverse crochet project and advicemagazine!

PATTERN NOTES

An optional fabric lining can be added,

if desired, or a decorative slip.
The Bodice is worked in a solid shell
pattern for a more modest look. Ribbon
is used to stabilize the upper Bodice and
minimize stretching, while still allowing
adequate give in the bust area.

The straps are worked in single crochet to

provide added stretch control for a better,
more comfortable fit.
Gown is worked from top to bottom.
Count solid shells on right side only.
Chain-3 at beginning of row or round
counts as first double crochet unless
otherwise stated.
All non-woven fabrics such as crochet
fabric develop what is known
as drop. Drop is the amount of
stretch created by the weight
of the fabric itself and other
factors. Drop is dependent upon
both the width and length of
your crochet work, as well as
the natural characteristics of
yarn used, your body shape and
height. Thus, the finished Skirt
length is impossible to predict
accurately without measuring.
When your Skirt measures
approximately 6 inches less
than desired finished length,
stop work at this point. Fold
Gown over hanger at waist and
pin in place. Hang over a door
or shower head and measure
length, re-measure Skirt from
waist to bottom while still
hanging before resuming work.
Compare both measurements
to determine actual drop.
Deduct last measurement taken
from total length desired to
determine how many more
inches to work to final length.
Place markers on last round
worked to last measurement
for guideline.
If you are working on a
deadline for the wedding, use
your wait time to crochet the
decorative flowers.
Skirt can be worked in 5

of the dress opening and work approximately 3 inches of single crochet, fasten

edge of the dress opening, leaving lacing
loops free; sew piece to bottom inside

Making it work

No more
crochet chaos
B Y D A RL A S I M S

If youre like most crocheters, you have a lot more

crochet stuff than just yarn stashed aboutthings like
favorite afghan and baby blanket patterns, and gift ideas
and articles torn from magazines and catalogs. Some
crocheters also have worn, wrinkled scraps of paper
listing family members sizes and measurements.

The things that stuff is made

of are likely to become an abomination of crochet chaos because
they are likely to be found in a
wide variety of placesbetween
the pages of a stitch dictionary,
in a forgotten drawer, at the bottom of your yarn basket, or, when
you need it most, you discover
its whereabouts have completely
slipped your mind altogether.

Three Types of Stuff

Usually, other than yarn, youre
likely to have three kinds of crochet stuff:
1. Pattern and reference books
2. Crochet tools: hooks, scissors,
plastic stitch markers, small
scissors, small calculator, pincushion, knitting gauge, yarn
needles, etc.
3. Things saved: magazine clippings, favorite patterns, sizing
information for loved ones, etc.

It takes little money, time or

effort to organize your materials,
and the pay off is huge in terms of
knowing where all that stuff resides at any given time. There are
solutions to organizing your three
kinds of crochet stuff in decorative ways.

great for keeping your magazines

nicely organized, theyre also a
simple solution to storing crochet
books and are available in all kinds
of looks. Choose the look that most
complements and blends in with

Magazines, Pattern
and Reference Books
Most crocheters gradually add
to their collection of magazines
and pattern and reference books.
But, as a collection grows, it somehow gets placed in different locations (likely wherever space is
available!), whether by yourself or
a family member. Before you know
it, the next time you need a certain
pattern to make a special gift for
someone, you may not be able to
find the particular book or magazine youre looking for, no matter
how hard or long you search.
Magazine holders are not only

the decor of the room where you

spend your time crocheting. From
the plainest of plastic, holders are
also available in a wide variety of
styles and finishes that range from
tailored, businesslike, high-tech,
and ultra-feminine to the exotic.
Buy two or three matching
holders for starters, even if you
dont have enough materials to fill
them all. Crochet libraries tend
to grow, and you may not be able
to match holders unless you buy
several at one time. Placed side by
side on a bookshelf, they look nice
and easily stand out from other books so you can quickly find
themanother time-saver!

Crochet Tools
Buy a decorative box with a
hinged lid to hold all those little
tools and necessities for crochet
work. Choose a box to complement your rooms decor. When
youve finished working, simply

36

Crochet! May 2008

place everything in your box and

close the lid. Voil! No muss, no
fuss and best of all, your box appears to be nothing more than
something of beauty that completes the look of your room.
Whether you select a sleek enameled box, one with a vintage look,
hammered copper, or something
floral, it adds a nice finishing
touch to any room.
A decorative box is my favorite gift for new crocheters. I include the little things a new crocheter isnt likely to already have,
like colored-ball pins which work
best with crochet work due their
bright colors, and their larger
heads dont become enmeshed
in a stitch or cause snags. Most
new crocheters dont yet have a
wide variety of crochet hooks, so
they go in the box as well. A retractable tape measure is a must,
as is a small pin cushion. Then I
toss in both plastic markers and
plastic marker safety pins, which
are so valuable when it comes
to counting the number of
stitches or rows required in a pattern, or to mark
the armhole and
neck shaping of
a garment. Last,
but not least,
yarn needles go
inside before the
lid is closed, and
the box is gift
wrapped.

Get a Notebook
The easiest and cheapest way
(less than five dollars) to begin is
with an inexpensive ring binder
that can be purchased in any chain
store. Get one with three rings
that snap open and that has pockets inside both the front and back
covers. Simply write Crochet
Stuff on the spine with a fine felt
pen, and you can put it on a handy
bookshelf. Print out a title sheet
and insert in the front cover plastic opening, if you like.
While youre at the store, get
two other inexpensive items: snapin clear sheet protectors and dividers with large customizable writeon tabs.
As you begin to sort and organize your crochet stuff, youll notice
right away that your conglomeration falls into categories such as
books, jacket and sweater patterns,
gift ideas, edgings, pattern stitches,
favorite garments, afghans, crochet articles, home dec, accessories
(handbags, scarves, belts, hats, etc.).

No doubt you also have a collection

patterns for babies, children, women, men, pets, etc.
There isnt any right or wrong
way to categorize your materials,
simply divide up your things in
a manner that suits you and your
needs. Write the categories on
the tabs of your dividers and snap
them into your notebook. Organize your materials into
stacks according to category.
Now, simply insert those
stacks of materials behind
the right divider. No doubt
youll be amazed at how
quickly all that chaos is suddenly transformed into an
organized system. When
you sit down and survey
your neatly organized room,
youll feel proud of what
you accomplished in so little
time, not to mention feeling
more calm and serene.
Want a decorative look? Cover
your notebook with pretty paper
and trims or, better yet, crochet a
cover. Add little motifs, bits of crochet lace or whatever you like to
embellish the outside.

Fold-out Filing
System Tote
These beauties are just the
ticket for another decorator touch,
as well as take-along projects. Easy
to carry about, whether from room
to room or on a trip, they keep
your crochet materials organized
ever so efficiently.
The one shown here features

a faux suede finish; others can be

found in slick leather, wild florals,
plaids, shiny metals or whimsical prints. Our tote has oodles of
folders and was found in the paper crafting section of a local craft
store. Self-adhesive, brightly colored index tabs (with paper inserts)
were attached to the top of each
section for easy identification.

You can substitute the tote for

your notebook, or make use of
both systemsits up to you!

Swatches
If youre like me, you develop
crochet yarn favorites. Regardless
of which yarns you prefer, heres
a tip that will save you countless
time when you next wish to begin
a crochet project. Make and save
a swatch in simple half double
crochet. Use mounting tape to
attach your newly-made swatch
to a sheet of paper or cardstock,
then add notes: size of hook used,

Cindy long:

Finding Humor in
Lifeand Crochet
Are there typos in your pattern book? Did you lose your
favorite G hook? Is your yarn tangled and frayed beyond
use? OUR POPULAR HOOKS & HUMOR COLUMNIST knows what
to do when bad strings happen to good people!
BY gwen blakley kinsler

After reading and enjoying

Cindys Hooks & Humor column in Crochet! for several years, it

occurred to me that it might be really interesting to get to know this
person who finds so much humor
and so much good related to our
beloved craft of crochet. I paid
her a visit via phone and found
out, coincidentally, that we both
live in the great state of Illinois!
Humor is just one of the many
interests of this delightful woman
who seemingly has a mind like
a sponge. I learn every thing I
know from books, including crochet, she explains. Cindy has
been crocheting for twenty years,
and she says it is like an addiction to her. I just have to do it;
the process is part of the fun, and
I love the feel of the yarn running
through my fingers as I relax.

38

Crochet! May 2008

Her Web site,

www.hooksandhumor.com, was
the result of boredom one day at
work. Cindy remembers, I just
started writing
down funny things
that related to my
hobby of crochet
for my own entertainment. When
I started the Web
site, I didn't think
I would get much of an audience,
but I believed that if others laugh
as a result of my jokes, so much
the better!
Becoming a humor columnist
for Crochet! magazine and working
for Carol Alexander was magic,
Cindy says. After I started the

Web site in 1998, I let it lie dormant. After that, I had about three
e-mail address changes. Somehow
Carol found me and wrote asking
me if she could use some of my
jokes in the magazine. Once I sent
her some, she suggested I send her
humor on a regular basis, and my

in-house for this job and has been

at it for five years. I love knowing
whats going on all around me, and
I especially love the opinion pages.
I even learned to read and write
Spanish from a book and now do
that at work also. Now and then
I will find a crochet-related article, and we do have a few crochet magazines as clients, including Crochet! I have been reading
that crochet and knitting are very
popular, and that the 20 to 30 age
group is really beginning to enjoy
it, as are boys and men.
I asked Cindy if she parlays her
humor into any other areas such
as stand-up comedy. She replied,
Oh no, I am too shy to be a comedian. Writing is so much easier
for me, and I dont have to look at
my audience! Cindy writes most
of the jokes on her Web site, but
she now has people e-mailing her
things that make them laugh. I
encourage visitors to my site to
leave comments, and I enjoy the
jokes they leave on the Web site as
much as anything. Humor makes
my day! Life is just hilarious, and I
wake up expecting something funny to happen every day.
Cindy is never without Postit notes wherever she goes. I am
constantly writing notes on ideas
that come to me. Whether I can
read my writing later or not is another story! My Web site is the
way I put my writing to good use.
I use humor to lighten up the day

first article appeared in May 2004.

I really enjoy working with Carol;
she gives me lots of free rein [a
testament to Cindys talent, perhaps?]. She doesnt even yell if I
am late for a deadline!
When I asked Cindy what
came first, her humor or her crochet, she explained that she has
been writing since she was a girl
of thirteen. My writing was in the
style of a teenage journal, and I
wrote everything but poetry. I always hoped to be a writer but never thought I would be published! I
continued to do it anyway because
it is fun.
Even though Cindy says her
day job is unrelated to her crochet
humor, it does offer her a wealth
of opportunity to find crochet information. She works for Cision
a public relations and media communications service that tracks
demographics as well. This is the
best job I have ever had; I get paid
to read the comics!
Cindy goes on to explain that
she reads newspapers and magazines from all around the country.
When she sees a mention of any
of the thousands of Cision clients, she clips the article and lets
the client know what the media is
saying about them. Clients range
from the Haas Avocado Board
to Mayor Michael Bloomburg to
her hometown tourism center in
Rockford.
With a degree in art, Cindy
says she was completely trained

D E S IGN B Y HELEN HE A V ERIN
SKILL LEVEL

Helen Heaverin is a mul-

titalented crafter who learned to

crochet from an aunt when she
was around 8 years old. She later
joined a crochet club in middle
school where she expanded on
her skills. Says Helen, Ive always
followed patterns, never actually
making my own designs, although
its something Ive always wanted
to do. I never thought something
Id design could be as good as all
those I see in magazines. So, you
can imagine my surprise when I
won 2nd prize. Its given me such
confidence to go further with crochet designing.
Helen is married with 3 children, 3 step-children and her first
grandson on the way. She and her
family live in the country, which
she loves. My husband just finished building me a small building out back, among all the trees,
that I call my cabin in the woods
and where I do all my crocheting
and crafting.
I will continue designing, and
I hope to see even more of my designs published. I just feel so lucky

and resulting gauge (number of

stitches per inch over at least four
inches). If you make any crochet project in the future with
the same yarn in single crochet
or double crochet, your gauge
(stitches per inch) will remain the
same, so you wont have to make a
new swatch.
Use this same technique for
your favorite afghan making yarn,
worked in your favorite stitch

your other favorite baby or chil-

drens items, lace work, and any

other crochet projects youre likely to make more than once. Of
course, these swatches go in your
crochet stuff notebook for future
reference.
Dont fall into the trap of
thinking that all yarns of the
same weight are sure to swatch
at the same gauge! There are
three factors that are apt to cause
problems should you fall into
the trap of thinking this might
be true. First, many yarns today

Motif, ch 10, sc in next ch-7 sp] rep to other
side, 2 sc in end of each row across to corner, 3 sc in corner, 2 sc in end of each row
across to back, sc in each dc and in each ch
sp across, join with sl st in beg sc.
Rnd 2: Ch 1, sc in each st around with 10
sc in each ch sp across Motifs to last 4 sts

are imported from European

mills. And in Europe, there are
DK (double knitting) weight
yarns (check labels!) that are in
between a medium and a light
weight, yet are labeled as medium weight for the American
market. The diameter of DK
weight yarns, therefore, will not
swatch the same as either a true
medium or light yarn.
Second, did you know dyes
can affect the true weight and diameter of yarns? When using any
white yarn, work another swatch
because white is the most likely
of all colors to thicken during the
dyeing process. This difference
may or may not affect your
gauge, but to ensure the proper
fit of a garment, its always best
to work a swatch.
Third, all fibers have natural
characteristics and tendencies
that are apt to affect gauge. For
example, cotton yarns have few,
if any, natural characteristics and
stitches tend to be more distinct
and separated than other yarns.
Many of todays yarns are blends
of various fibers and, thus, have
individual characteristics that
are dependent upon the percentages of fibers blended together. When in doubt, take the
time to swatch!
You dont need to make a
new swatch to check gauge as
long as you use the same yarn,
the same size of hook and the
same stitch or fancy stitch.

However, if you plan to crochet

a jacket in the same yarn but are
using a different pattern stitch,
like a shell pattern, you then must
work a new swatch. Any time you
make a swatch youre likely to use

again, save that swatch to save

time in the future.
Using these fun, creative techniques, crochet chaos can be transformed into crochet calm in a remarkably short amount of time! C!

Life is like a game, and we cant

Hooks & humor

B y C I N D Y LON G

a Quick cleanup
Last week my mother-in-law called
and asked if she could drop by for
luncha nice gesture and one I
would normally welcomeuntil I
looked around the house.
My entire home was in CHAOSCrochet Hobby All Over
Surfaces. I had an unfinished doily
on the end table, a half-finished
afghan in a brown paper bag sitting by the door, two yarn catalogs
open on the coffee table (topped
with a barely-started table runner),
and in the kitchen, a stack of hand
towels waiting to be topped.
I told her of course, come right
over. That left me with exactly 12
minutes to get everything straightened upif she hit all the red lights.
Now, where do I put everything?
My first thought was to stuff it
all in the closet. No good. It was already full from last weeks cleaning.
Okay, I could at least put the bagged
afghan in the oven. It would be out
of sight. What about the doily? If I
place a small dish of cookies on the
unfinished portion, no one would
ever know. Plus, its cookies.
Just as I was wondering what
to do with two bags of yarn I
bought yesterday, I heard a knock
at the door. I took a last look

around and straightened the two

catalogs on the table. Maybe shed
believe theyre coffee-table books,
although the dog-eared pages and
underlining might give them away.
I opened the door and welcomed
her. Come inlet me hang up
your coat. I opened the closet
door and immediately realized my
mistake when 11 skeins of yarn fell
on my head. Theyre not mine, I
explained feebly, Im storing them
for a friend.

I tried to cover my embarrassment by fixing lunch. Everything

was going fine until I reached into
the cabinet for some teacups, and
instead found a long-forgotten pot
holder project. With my motherin-law standing close by, I had to
cover my chagrin. Thinking fast, I
pointed to the end table and said,
Lookcookies!
Now, how do I get the afghan
out of the oven so I can bake the
muffins? C!
