School Tips
For parents and kids.

ummer is winding down and school shopping is on the calendar. Transitioning from
the warm, fun summer days can be difficult with the return to school looming around
the corner. As we take in every free moment we
can, appreciating the final days of summer, the
first day of school can come in a blink before
were really ready for it.
Here Dr. Fran Walfish, a child and family
psychotherapist and author of The Self-Aware
Parent, and Christina Nichols, PhD, a licensed
clinical psychologist from a leading independent school in New York City and the Hallowell Center, offer some tips to help kids stay on
track, get them (and you) prepared for their first
day -- while making sure you dont go complete
gray.
1. A week or two before the school year begins,
kids should start going to bed and waking up as
they would on school days -- it can take a while
for their bodies to adjust to non-summer hours.
2. Get children on a regular exercise program or
into an active hobby to create good habits and
burn off extra energy.
3. Take kids to cultural attractions like museums or historical sites the week before school
starts. Get them thinking about subjects theyll
be tackling in the year ahead.
4. Encourage kids to read a book in the week or
two before school begins. Ease them into quiet
time, while giving them a jumpstart on refreshing their reading skills.

13. Discuss what to expect on the first day with

your children, such as gathering for home room
and reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. This can
help them feel more prepared.
Visit the school with your child before school
starts. If possible, allow her to see her new classroom and play in the schoolyard. Familiarity
breeds comfort.

for elementary school kids and preschoolers.

Figure out blocks of time for children to have
fun during the week, by playing sports or
spending time with friends.

33. Use sticky note flags to highlight important

reading passages, documents that need to be
signed and places where children left off on
their homework.

23. Layout clothes the night before and encourage kids who are old enough to dress themselves
before having breakfast.

34. Set your clocks forward 10 minutes. This

makes it easier to be on time.

14. Arrange play dates with two or three of

your childs classmates to rebuild social ties that
cooled over the summer.

24. Set expectations for the morning routine,

such as waking up, making their bed, showering
and getting dressed. Use this printable checklist.
Pack any gym or sports bags the night before,
so they can easily be taken out the door in the
morning.

5. Use a homework app such as iHomework or

MyHomeWork to help kids organize assignments.

15. Include your child in shopping for school

supplies. Encourage him to choose his own
backpack and lunch box.

6. Set up regular weekly meetings with your

child to review their schedules, assignments and
activities for the week ahead.

16. Decide what area will be used as homework

space, whether its the dining room table or a
family office.

7. Create a family calendar -- whether a Google

Calendar or a colorful Wall Calendar -- that
highlights family activities and everyones major
commitments.

17. Encourage kids to develop a filing system

where they can store research material, drawings
and graded papers for each class.

8. Set or refresh the rules about technology

and screen time during the school year. Whats
allowed and when?

18. Ask kids to set goals for the year ahead, such
as reading 30 books or maintaining an A-minus
average. Having something to shoot for keeps
even hard to focus kids on target.

9. Choose a time to focus on family conversations and connections, such as during dinner or
before bedtime.

19. Help kids prioritize their activities each

week -- including sports, homework, and family
time -- by connecting them to goals.

10. End the summer on a positive note,

allowing kids a specific day with activities they
choose (e.g. swimming or a visit to a theme
park) to start their transition to fall.

20. Create a list together of fun after-school

activities and games, so kids will never be bored
when they get home.

11. Allow kids a short break after each assignment they finish, such as a snack or a short
walk.
12. Avoid becoming the Homework Cop by
setting an alarm each day that signals the start
of homework time.

21. Touch base with teachers early in the semester to identify and troubleshoot behavioral or
study issues.
22.Go over your childs bedtime routine -- is
there anything that should change to make it
more efficient? Follow these printable checklists

25. Encourage kids to pack their backpacks

before they go to sleep at night.
26. Ask kids to help you stay organized, by
putting lunchboxes in the sink and dirty gym
clothes in the hamper when they get home.
27. Is your home setup kid-friendly? Low hooks
make it easy for younger children to hang up
their coats, for example.
28. Create an inbox where children can leave
permission slips, school announcements and
other things that need your attention.
29. Have a set time each week to sync up individual calendars with the family calendar.

35. Use positive phrasing, such as you can go

outside after your homework is done, instead of youre not going outside until this is
finished.
36. Use night lights, white sound machines and
fans for kids who have trouble getting to sleep.
If its a regular problem, talk to their pediatrician.
37. Schedule adequate study blocks on the
weekends before big tests, mid-terms and finals.
38. Use under-the-bed storage for out-of-season
clothes and toys that arent regularly used.
39. Give each person a shower caddy, to organize their bathroom supplies and shorten the
time it takes to get ready in the morning.
40. Figure out ways you can be involved in the
classroom this school year -- no matter how
much time you can devote.

30. Get copies of school menus in advance to

discuss lunch choices.

41. Talk with your kids about their feelings

returning to school. Discuss fears, concerns or
worries openly to reassure your child. Hit on
these 5 Back-to-School Worries.

31. Buy kids a reusable sports bottle that can be

used to increase water consumption throughout
the day.

42. Do something fun or find a way to laugh.

Diffuse this stressful time of year for you and
for them.

32. Keep a small emergency allowance in your

kids bags, in case they need to purchase food or
a beverage.

43. Take a breath! With all this preparation,

your kids will be in great shape. If youre relaxed
and calm, theyll head off to school feeling
excited and ready to get to work. n

Theres An
Oil For That
An all natural remedy.

here are many things that get us

running to the medicine cabinet
looking for relief when we dont feel
very good. But hardly ever do we ask ourselves
why. Why those specific over-the-counter,
store bought items? Many of us dont have a
very good answer other than Its just what
youre supposed to get. or Thats what Ive
always used. Its a habit carried over from our
parents during the rise of modern medicine.
That doesnt necessarily make it bad, but its
important to note that it isnt our only option.

All natural remedies have been used
to help heal our ailments for generations long
before even our grandparents time. Essential oils are just one of the many types of all
natural remedies people can look to for help
in managing their health. One oil in particular
is Ravintsara.

Ravintsara (Cinnamomum camphora) is referred to as the oil that heals
in Madagascar. Another universal oil like
Lavender because of its many uses. It may be
anti-viral, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-infectious, antiseptic, expectorant, supporting to
nerves. It can assist with respiratory problems,

sinusitis, viral hepatitis, cholera, herpes,
infectious mononucleosis, insomnia, muscle
fatigue.
This particular oilhas strong anti-infectious,
antiseptic, antiviral, and antibacterial properties.Itis agentle anti-viral essential oil
andis a better choice for use with children
or pregnant or nursing moms. This anti-viral
oil is the oil of choice for respiratory viruses
and or bronchial problems. Its high content
of 1.8 cineole ci will help ease breathing and
congestion. This oil is devoid of any toxicity
(at physiological doses).
Application: topical (apply to the skins surface), inhale, diffuse, NOT a dietary supplement, do not ingest. Dilute 50:50 with water
to avoid skin irritation.

If youre interested in learning more
about Ravintsara or any other essential oil,

oils in future issues of The Valleys Nickel as
I talk more about the different oils out there

Souled Out
Sunday Review
by Underground Media

ouled OutSunday, a show recently put

on at local downtown venue Fulton
55,was definitely a night to remember. From the moment you stepped into the
building you could literally feel the soulful
vibrations and positive vibes permeating
throughout the room. As soon as the performers stepped on to the stage, you felt reaffirmed
that you made the right choice in coming to
Fulton 55 instead of anywhere else that night.
The event line up was solid, including some of
Fresnos most talented singers.

The line up included Delilah Kidane,
Talia Archie, LeBreaun, Tanisha So Real,
Haille Williams, Brandee Duren, Desirae
Monique, Mystique Steward and the host
of the event Bri Janelle. Each artist added
her own flavor while bringing a high caliber
performance to the stage. It was evident that
they brought their very best.
Delilah Kidane sang her rendition of
At Last, making Etta James proud as every
note dripped with beautiful emotion. I was
beyond speechless. Kidane performed some of
her own material that begged you to abandon
your chair and submit to the groove.
Talia Archie brought strength and
conviction to the stage. When she sang about
writing him a good by letter, I felt like I
was the one writing that letter. Her words
punctured right through the air and in to me
making me feel as if it was my own history
tearing in to the microphone. It was quite the
remarkable performance.
LeBreaun performed a song that
she wrote with Ceelo titled All In My Lane.

She definitely knows how to own the stage
and was very entertaining along with her
dancer!
Tanisha So Real read poetry that
was indeed so real, and motivating, and
inspirational. Her words reverberated off the
walls and left a deep impression on those who
decided to listen.
Haillie Williams performance was
one of emotional depth as she sang The
Worst by Jhene Aiko and she owned her
presence on that stage. If there was only one
thing I could say about it, it would be that it
was very powerful!
Brandee Durens performance was
simply outstanding, especially since there was
a malfunction. She decided to sing anyway
and some of the other performers united together and stepped on stage to perform right
along with her. Talk about support.
Desirae Monique sang Im Going
Down by Brandy and she owned it! She also
sang her own material. The song left me hoping that itll be available for download soon.
Hint, hint Desirae.
Mystique Steward sang Beyonces
Crazy In Love and added her own style and
twist to it. Sitting in your chair just wasnt
an option when she belted out this song, you
didnt argue, you just got up and moved to it!
Bri Janelle, host of the event was
definitely a great addition to the show. She
sang and did her thing to see that the night
moved along smoothly.
Souled OutSunday was definitely
a night to remember and I am most certainly
looking forward to more events like this one.
In fact, Souled OutSunday will be coming
back for part 3, the mens edition, onSeptember 20th, 2015at Fulton 55. Doors open
at7:30. Definitely looking forward to that
and seeing what the men bring to the stage.
You can also catch Mystique Steward over

Mystique Steward - Photo credit: Desired Photography

Desirae Monique - Photo credit: Desired Photography

Delilah Kidane - Photo credit: Desired Photography

at Kockys Bar and Grill every Friday. Doors

open at9pmand there is a $5 cover charge.
As the night ended, one thing that
was evident about the Souled Out Sunday
event was that it was it was a night well spent.
If Ricardo Parker continues to put on performances like this, Ill definitely be there! The
unity and sisterhood among the performers
was beautiful, and the support from the audience is what makes events like this possible.
So lets continue to show support for
all of the remarkable talent that surrounds us.
Local events and shows dont stand a chance
without the attention of an audience, they
perform because youre listening, and the more
of you there are to hear their stories, the more

that will come. In a world that is immensley

threaded with commercial voices telling us
who to pay attention to, its important that
we shed light on the unique, intelligent and
incredibly talented individuals who are displaying their craft with the utmost passion to
anyone who will hear them.
So the next time youre out and
wondering just where to go on your night
off, try stopping in to that unfamiliar place
where undiscovered music is pouring from
the speakers by someone baring their soul
on stage. You may just be surprised at what
youll find inside. Give local music a chance
and lend them your ear. Heres to many more
nights of music and soul.
