I'vebeenlurkinghereforawhile,readingmanyofyourresponsesandtips.
UntilnowIhavepreferredamoreportablearrangementformyfirstrocketstove,thoughI'mstillnotsureaboutthe
safetyofsuchanidea,duetocarbonmonoxide(CO)concern.
Anywho,Idrewupthisdesignyesterdaymorningandplayedaroundwithitalittlebittoday.Myplanistouse
vermiculatewithrefractorymortarata4:1ratioona4"riser,1"wallthickness,thenpossiblyinsulatingtheriserwitha
1"kaowool(inswool)blanket,thensealingtheoutsideoftheblanketwithanother1"wallagainof4:1vermiculite&
refractory.I'mcuriousifthekaowool(inswool)blanketisnecessary,howevershouldIjustgowitha3"wallof
vermiculite&refractory?

Thehouseistwostorywithafullbasement,walkout.

Ihavefireclay,refractory,perlite,vermiculite,and1/4"fiberglassstrandthatIplannedtouseforthecoreandtheriser,
thensetabarrel(either15gallon,20gallon,or30gallon)overtheriser.IdeallyitwouldbegreatifIcouldhavethe

Thehousewasbuiltin1910byalocalbusinessman,StephenUnderhill,whosefamilyownedtheCrotonBrickWorks
(somethinglikethat)andCrotonwinerybeforethebrickworkswastorndowntomakewayfortheNewCrotonDam.
Thefamilywentbankruptby1925andmovedtoCalifornia.
IbelievethehousewasbuiltfromCrotonbrickandstonefromthedambuildingproject.
StephenUnderhill'snephewvisitedafewyearsagoandgaveussomepicturesofthehouseshortlyafterit's
construction,showingalargekitchengardenalmost1/4acreandalargechickencoopbehindtheshedinthe
backyard.Theshedisnowconvertedintoaninsulatedcabinithaschestnutbeamsunderthefloor.

Inthebasementofthehouseisabarrelvaultedrootcellar/winecellar,underthefrontporch,extendingthewidthof
thehouse,madeoftheredCroton?Brick.
Inthebasement,theceilingjoistsare14inchesapart,fromtheinsideedgeofonetotheinsideedgeofthenext.The
joistsarejustunder2incheswide.Ibelievetheyaremadeofchestnut(hardtosay).Againsttheouterwall,inthe
basementceilingunderthefireplace,Iseeabrickbarrelvaulthowever,Icannottellifitissupportingthefireplace

Yeswehaveagaswaterheaterandgasfurnaceincloseproximitybeneaththefireplace.Notthebrightestarrangement,
butthat'swherethewaterandgaslinescomeintothebasement.Probablythesedaysinnewconstructionthatwould

notpasscode.Iwillgetapictureofitinafewminutesandposthere.
Inthemeantime,Ihavecompletedasimpledrawingofthehearthandfireboxwithmeasurements.Seepicturebelow.
Alsohereisapictureoftheoveninthekitchen.ThisisanAga,acastironheatstorageoven,nat.gas.Thehousehada
similaroveninitsoriginalconstruction,fueledbycoal.I'mcuriousifthisstovecouldbeconvertedtoarocketstovefrom
nat.gas.OfcourseIwon'tbedoinganymessingaroundwithitfornow!Butsomedaytheconversionorreplacementwill
becomeanecessity,givenwhatIbelievewillbetheexponentiallyrisingcostoffuels.

Hereisapictureofthewaterheaterandfurnace(pardonthejunk!).Thefurnacefeedswater(steam?)radiators
upstairs.Thesearetheoriginalcastironradiatorstheyweighseveralhundredpoundseach.Untilabout1930orsothe
housewasfueledbycoal,andthecoaldumpwasinthebackcornerofthehousebeneaththediningroom.Thecoal
chutehasbeenfilledinwithconcrete.Nowweuseusenat.gas.
Anotheroptionmightbe,ratherthanhavingtheRMHinthehouse,tohaveitoutsideonthecabinterraceoronthe
deck.Seepictures.MaybeIcouldbuildashortcobwallintoandaroundthebenchtoconcentratetheheatinward.

wallbeneaththefireplace,andofcoursedirectlybeneaththefireplaceashdump.LikeIsaid,notthebestcircumstances
here!
Anywho,IamalsoconsideringtheRMHinthecabinasapracticeforalargerRMHinthehouse.Perhapsa4"or6"
systemwouldbeeasilysufficientinsuchasmallspaceasthecabin.Ibelievethecabinisapproximately8feetby12
feet.Ihaveattachedapicturehere.
Onanothernote,regardingenergymarkets,I'vebeenkickingaroundtheapproximatedatesalittlebit,wafflingbackand

risetothetopandsitlettingthebarrelremoveheatfromthegas.Thecooledgaswouldgetpusheddownbynewly

insulationbeforegoinguptheflue.Thiswouldgiveabalancedlookandforthespaceremovethemostheatfromtheflue

WewantedtoofferthecastingforsaleatDragonHeaters.ButalasafterLOTSoftimeandmoneydownthisrabbithole

1)Theyarenotonlymoretrickytobuildandcasttheyareparticularlymoretrickyforheatcapture.JustaskMatt
Walker.Webothhadlotsofhairpullingwithunitsthatwouldrunfineunderonecircumstanceandthenjustcrashand
turnintoadogwhentheconfigurationwaschangedinaseeminglyharmlessway.Thetechnologyhaspromiseand
appealanditwillbethereinthefuture,butinmyexperience,thedesignisnotthestableworkhorsearocketheateris.
Sowehavetableditforthemoment.Therearedesignsthatworkwiththisfirebox,butmanythatalsodonotworkwell.
Theheatcapturedesigniscritical.
2)Thefireisdesignedtoburnfromthe"back"towardstheglassdoor.Theresultisyourlookingatyourpileofwood,
seeinglittleflickersoflightfromthebackforquitesometime.Youlookandwonder,hasmyfiregoneout...nothereit

well,sinceI'vebeenfollowinghisdiscussionsandvideosforawhile.
ThebellideaIhadnotconsidered.UntilnowIhadthoughtonlyaboutamoretraditionalrocketstovedesign,withor
withoutthemass.Thebellmightaddressthelackofspaceforathermalmass.
Idon'tknowaboutthelocalavailabilityofclay.Ipresumethereisalotofitaroundhereevenwithintheproperty(5
acres),inadditiontomillionsoftonsofstoneandprobablyalsoseveralhundredcordsofwood(seepictures).Nearbyis
theHudsonRiverwouldtheriverbeachesbeagoodsourceofclay?Iwonderiftheymightbetoomuchlacedwith
PCBs....MostofthePCBcleanupontheriverisdone,thoughIstillseethebargesoutontheriveroccasionally.
