‘Once there lived in Pathein a delta town, a rich man
and his wife who were blessed with a daughter most
beautiful and clever, and understandably, a bit vain. Her
name was Ohnmar Dani. When she came of age, she was
that men who saw her usually go temporarily
insane. So the parents never allowed her to go outside, or
sit at windows, in case men saw her and go mad and maybe
‘sue them.
‘The king heard of her beauty, of course, and as kings
are wont to do, thought about making her his queen. To
0 beat
check out the truth of her fame, he sent his four ministers
to inspect the git.
‘The ministers duly called on her parents, and were
offered rice cakes and tea. As they were eating Ohnmar
Dani came out to gre
enraptured of her beauty that they lost all composure: one
Poured tea into his lap; one pushed food into his nose;
‘one placed his plate on his head; and the last tried to eat
his hat.
After a while they regain what they could of their dignity,
and went away in disarray while Ohnmar Dani giggled with
her maids. Now the ministers wore so ashamed of their
behaviour that they dared not report the truth to the king.
Instead they reported that she was pretty enough, but really
not much, nothing exceptional, no Sire. So the king decided
them. The four ministers were so
not to bother with her, but advised his younger brother,
the goneral, to take her as wife. This the brother did most
gladly and happy were the pair, for Ohnmar Dani truly loved
her handsome and brave husband. But when she learned
that the king had not thought her pretty enough to be a
‘queen, she silently vowed revenge: for which woman would
not do so, if her beauty were insulted?
Her husband also kept her indoors, as her parents did.
On the full moon of Tazaungmon by the Burmese Lunar
month, which is in November, lights were offered at
pagodas for three days, and the house fronts were also
decorated with lamps and coloured lanterns. One year the
king decided to go around the city to see the lights and
rode out on his elephant on the full moon night.
‘As soon as the king was about to pass her house, she
came out on the balcony with a bowl of flowers and threw
some down on him. The King looked up: and there was
Ohnmar Dani in all her beauty, smiling down at him. He
goggled, he stared, and he fell off the elephant.
‘Ohnmar Dani retired into the house with dignity, while
the king scrambled up his elephant, turban fallen off and
garments awry. He went back to the palace miserable and
ashamed.
From that day he could not eat and he could not sleep.
He dreamed over Ohnmar Dani's beauty and moaned about
his loss. Probably he punished the four lying ministers,
Finally he was so thin and distraught that his younger
brother, the general, could not bear it any longer.
“Please, Your Majesty my elder brother, if you suffer
this much, take my wife. | would die of heartbreak, for we
love each other dearly, but if it will ease your agony, | give
her to you.
‘tthe kind words, the king felt very ashamed. He knew
that he was not worthy to be king, and decided to live out
his life as a hermit. He gave his throne to his brother, and
went to live in the forest. So Ohnmar Dani became queen,
after all

‘The plant of this fruit is a woody vine. This vine bears small, juicy fruits in
clusters. The grapes in Myanmar are of green and purple colour. However,
there are 3 types of grapes. Some grapes are eaten raw, some are dried and

in Central Myanmar and bears fruits mostly in cold weather.
