TOPIC INTRODUCTION
Electric utilities are asset - intensive
organizations and the investments that these
assets require can reach into the billions. Yet
many of these assets which constitute a crucial
part of the transmission system are at the end
of their productive period and it is vital that
electric utilities pay attention to their health.
Asset management prioritizes investments in
assets to maintain or improve performance
and life expectancy throughout an assets life
cycle.
A strategic approach to assets, their state
and maintenance is able to deliver intelligence,
data, risk evaluation, degradation and an
optimised maintenance plan. Along with
modern technologies already in use, asset
management determines the best replacement
scheme for an asset by factoring variables
like load growth, overload, risk of failure and
downtrend to ensure that replacements are
done neither too soon nor too late. Combined
with improved maintenance strategy, this will
help to extend equipment life cycles and cut
down on costs significantly.
Understanding the current status and
limitation of electric assets will improve their
optimisation and effectiveness. Organizations
that implement asset management frameworks
learn to understand where opportunities and
risks are within their operations.
