Ticket: # 30190 - CBS showing Tom Brady saying FUCK repeatedly in primetime
Date: 12/3/2014 2:51 :47 PM
Received via: TV
City/State/Zip: Menomonie, Wisconsin 54751
Status: Open
Description
I cannot believe, that during the prime time football game between Green Bay and New England on
Sunday, November 30th that CBS allowed and PROMOTED the unacceptable actions and swear
words said multiple times by Tom Brady. It was not only shown, but repeated and shown in slow
motion multiple times, and commented on by the announcers Brady's reaction and words of F***. He
said it repeatedly, which no one can control, but I expect the network to not show it over and over. I
have children who were watching, and now, because Tom Brady and CBS feel it's ok to say F***, and
show it repeatedly on national television, wonder why they cannot say it! He is a public figure, and
my disappointment with his behavior is immense. But, CBS has the final responsibility on what is
shown on their network. I am not the only one outraged by this. It is on fire on Facebook, Twitter,
etc, and a protest is not far off. This is a family program and supposedly a family network. My
disappointment cannot be adequately expressed. Guidelines by the FCC must be followed. CBS
should be ashamed for allowing this to not only be shown, but to be replayed multiple times and the
announcers pointing it out. Shame on them. The FCC has to take action for allowing this.
I now pledge, if I do ever watch CBS, that I will turn the volume off, and change the channel at every
commercial. Hopefully the sponsors will step up and demand the network take responsibility and stop
showing the blatant swearing shown during games.
That word is not allowed on primetime television at all, why would football be any different? It is not
just watched by overweight, beer drinking, middle aged men with erectile dysfunction. In my house, it
is a family event.
Your response would be appreciated, and your action demanded.
According the FCC website:
Q: How have obscenity and indecency been defined?
A: In 1973, the U.S. Supreme Court established the following criteria to determine whether speech is
obscene: (1) whether the average person, applying contemporary community standards, would find
that the work, taken as a whole, appeals to prurient interest; (2) whether the work depicts or
describes in a patently offensive way sexual conduct specifically defined by applicable state law; and
(3) whether the work, taken as a whole, lacks serious literary, artistic, political, or scientific value. In
1978, the Court stated that whether the work could be deemed "patently offensive" would depend on
context, degree and time of broadcast.
The Commission's generic definition of "indecency" is one that applies to language that describes, in
terms patently offensive as measured by contemporary community standards for the broadcast
medium, sexual or excretory activities and organs.
Q: Are there provisions in federal law that penalize the showing of obscene material on cable
channels?
A: Yes. Both 47 U.S.C. 559 and 18 U.S.C. 1468(a) respectively bar the transmission of obscene
material over a cable system and the knowing utterance or distribution of obscene matter by means
of a cable television system or subscription service.

Description
During last 2 minutes of First Quarter between New England Patriots and Green Bay Packers, CBS
actually went to a replay recording to show QB Tom Brady clearly yelling UF*CK!J while approaching
the bench after failing to make a first down. Totally unnecessary, offensive, did not occur as part of
the play on the field, nor was it broadcast live so as to be unexpected. It was clearly a recording from
a sideline camera that had to be previewed prior to being broadcast, and was still used. Parents
should not have to worry about CBS clearly and intentionally choosing to broadcast such a vulgarity
at 4:55PM EST for all to see.

Description
As my boys get a bit older I cherish the time where I can sit with them and we can share one of our
favorite past times, watching football, It is truly a special time for us. This is precisely why I am
appalled, disgusted, and disappointed to watch the New England Patriots on national TV. I had to sit
with my boys and watch the combination of Bill Belicheck and Tom Brady clearly articulate the work
"FUCK" at least 9 times. Someone can stick up their middle finger in a preseason game and be
fined, and then watch these adults exhibit this deplorable behavior. You should - at a minimum - fine
both of them, with the threat of suspension if they do not clean up your sport.

Description
Two times during the broadcast CBS Sports showed New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady
during moments of frustration mouthing the F-word. Though no audio was broadcast one could tell
that CBS chose to show the footage as it was not shown in realtime or live. The incidents, one in
slow motion, showed total disregard by those at CBS Sports toward their viewing audience.
Furthermore, the broadcast was during prime time with a sizable audience of younger children
viewing. Why? What was the benefit of showing this to the audience? What benefit was there to the
NFL, Tom Brady, CBS Sports, or the viewing audience? For future games should CBS place a
parental advisory on the screen? It was not necessary nor was it what one would expect to see on
television. Granted it is a game of frustration and tempers do flare, but the adult viewing audience
knows that; my 8 year-olds did not.
Description
Hello, I'm not sure if this warrants a complaint, however I wanted to send something mentioning that
during the Packers/Patriots game on Sunday, the camera panned to and remained on Tom Brady
after the Packers scored or there was a flag. On two or three occasions it was clearly obvious that
Tom Brady was dropping the F Bomb. I've sent a complaint to the Patriots about the conduct of their
quarterback. i'm also reaching out to the FCC as I think there is something more that CBS could have
done to not remain focused on Brady. I don't find fault with my local station, but I do find fault with
what Brady did and what CBS did. They could have cut the feed to the camera or focused back to the
field instead of letting him continue to curse.

Description
I recently read an article where the author mentions that only three complaints were lodged with FCC
regarding CBS' coverage of the Tom Brady melt-down and profanity laced rant. This author made a
joke about how only three complained and hinted that the FCC was most likely going to just ignore
the complaints. Well I'd like to add one more complaint to that total and hopefully these now FOUR
complaints will not just be ignored.
I think CBS should be contacted and told that they have a responsibility not to promote such behavior
by keeping their cameras on an individual who was so clearly mouthing expletive, after expletive
when they knew full well that children were watching this and though no audio was sent, it was very
evident what he was saying.
If some individual wants to engage in these childish rants, that's his business, but the viewing
audience doesn't need to witness it as extensively as CBS chose to televise it.
This was a willful act on the part of CBS because I'm sure that they had more than adequate time to
edit out these unsuitable scenes prior to sending it out over the air ways.
I only ask that you guys not ignore your responsibility and do your job by pressuring and/or penalizing
these TV networks so that they will do a better job on what they choose to show to their viewers.

during the patriots bucs preseason game on fox fri night right after the first false start on the patriots, torn brady
(the quarter back for the patriots) turned and yelled "im tired of you fucking assholes". it is common knowledge more
so to the players that they have microphones that pick up the sounds on the field. this is a concern because my 8
year old son was watching the game with me. as far as i am aware the f word is not allowed, this happens often on
televised football games. i have watched many live TV shows where they are required to have a time delay so that
they can beep any inappropriate language. i want a response to this as i am sure my 8 year old son is not the only
child that heard this,

Greetings. My 6 year old children know how to read lips even if there is no sound. So why during the telecast is CBS going
out of their way with 1.53 minute left in the first quarter between the Patriots? and the ??Packers? game to show Tom Brady
screaming the F word on national TV? The commentators even brought attention to the frustration expressed by Mr. Brady
by focusing on his muted foul language. It happened again before the 2:00 minute warning in the fourth quarter where again
the CBS telecast focused on Mr. Brady expressing foul language. I understand it is football and foul language will be used. I
am wondering why CBS is going out of their way to showcase it? Twice? Thank you for your time. Dr. Michail Poulakis.

During the Patriots/Green Bay football game the camera showed multiple times Tom
Brady on the Side lines yelling "Fuck". He said it multiple times and they showed it
multiple times. My 8 year old grandson was watching the game with me and even
commented that he should not have said that.
I understand the first time it happened that the camera man would not have expected
that but to keep the camera on Tom Brady as he kept yelling was uncalled for.
I put down as 4:30 pm as the time but that may not be the exact time of the Incident.

Throughout the broadcast, the camera repeatedly cut to New England Patriot's quarterback, Tom Brady when he
was visibly upset and saying F***. At 1:53 left in the 1st quarter, the announcers even called attention to it by
prefacing the clip they showed with, "Brady's reaction after failing to pick up a first down on that series" and then
showed a clip of him saying F*** on the sidelines. They clearly knew he was saying it and so did my 10 year old
son. Other instances with other players and coaches occurred in the broadcast, but none were as blatant. Just
because there was no sound, it was clear enough to everyone. It was almost as if the announcers got away with
it, because- they didn't actually say it. Very unprofessional.
