Tabor-Powell Sewer Project

Proposed Night Work

Environmental Services will begin construction of a project to replace and repair
approximately 37,000 feet of aging public sewer pipe at 61 locations in northeast and
southeast Portland. The public sewer pipes in this project range in age from 60 to 104 years
old, with the majority being over 90 years old. Projects that repair and replace aging sewer
pipes are important for protecting water quality, public health and the environment.
NOISE VARIANCE
Environmental Services is applying for a noise variance to allow open trench work at night
at the locations indicated on the map (see reverse side of this page). Night work is needed
because of the high daytime traffic volumes along these streets. Normal construction hours
are 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Work after 6:00 p.m. and before 7:00
a.m. and all hours on Sundays requires a noise variance. The project is estimated to start this
winter.

CONSTRUCTION METHOD
The citys contractor will use open trench excavation, which will involve the following steps.
There may be periods of inactivity between the steps. For more information on construction

Cutting of pavement for pipe installation
Removing the pavement and other materials
Installing the new sewer pipe
Excavating and connecting drains
Excavating and connecting sewer connections to homes and businesses as needed
Backfill and compact trenches with sand or gravel
Installing temporary pavement
Completing final paving and restoration
The equipment the contractor will use at this location will consist of a pavement saw, track
hoe, front-end loader, dump trucks, by pass pumps, pavement roller, generators and lights.
