ASYNCHRONOUS MOTORS

INSULATION
Insulation classes
The chemical and physical features of the
insulating materials are decisive for the
smooth operation and the useful life of an
electric motor. Therefore it is necessary to
define a limit to the operation temperature

depending on the insulating material used.

Thus each type of insulating material used
must ensure the smooth running of the
motor within its absolute temperature
limits. The quality of insulating materials

According to international standards, temperature is measured in C (Celsius),

whereas the temperature difference is
measured in K (Kelvin), 1C = 1K. For class
F, for example, the temperature must not
exceed 105K if the room temperature does
not exceed +40C. This value is valid if the
resistance measuring method is applied.
This means that first of all the winding
resistance at room temperature is
measured and then a thermal test of the
motor at the rated power is carried out; at
the end of this test the winding resistance
is measured again. The temperature

is specified in the IEC 34-1 standard

according to insulation class. Each class
has an established temperature limit as
absolute value.

increase is calculated according to the

following formula:
T=[(R2-R1)/R1] (235+T1) + (T1-T2)
where:
R1 is the cold-state resistance found at
room temperature T;
R2 is the cold-state resistance found at
room temperature T;
235 is the constant for copper windings.
This method determines the average temperature increase.
Therefore, for example, 10K represents a
further thermal margin between the
average winding temperature and the tem-

perature at its warmest point.

All CANTONI motors are produced with
class H copper wire windings and class F
insulating materials.
Each winding is submitted to an accurate
treatment with hot-curing resins and is
therefore remarkably resistant to moisture
and sudden room temperature changes.
Moreover, impregnation is made with a
tropicalized paint, which protects the motor
even under extreme climatic conditions.

The standard equipment for all CANTONI motors includes class F insulation and a high operating temperature corresponding with
class B; the temperature of the stator windings is therefore significantly reduced and consequently the average life of the motor is
increased.

All motors are class F as standard. H class motors are available on request.
