Curriculum Overview - Level 3

Term 1

(Approx 15 lessons/weeks)

Unit 1 - FOUNDATION
1.1 (1.5 lessons)
Quick icebreaker - explanation why we need to write well.
Teacher - verbal (same as L2)
Explain all stories have a Beginning, Middle and an End
To write well we must remember the importance of
GRAMMAR
and DETAILS. (Verb tense agreement and use of
adjectives/adverbs) Bye-bye Baby Words e.g. nice, big,
good etc, punctuation and dialogue

Quick intro re what makes a story 5 Ws & 2 Hs
(Teacher to solicit what the Ws and Hs are. Then write
answers on the board. Students to write in their
worksheet)
Activity 1: Quick recap of Story Mountain and Story
Elements (w/b)
(Teacher to draw story mountain on board and fill in
details)
Activity 2: Introduce 5 Paragraph story with Story Hand
(w/s)
Teacher to ask children to draw their own hand on the
worksheet and have them fill in the details of the story
elements onto the fingers.
Activity 3: Main Idea/ Topic Sentences/ Hamburger
Paragraph (w/s)

1.2 (1.5 lessons)

Activity 4: Importance of vocabulary. Exercise on use of


power words
Activity 5: Review of Dialogue rules. Practice punctuating
paragraphs.
Activity 6: Review sequencing using conjunctions.
Unit 2 - NON-FICTION WRITING
2.1 Letter Writing (4 lessons)
Activity 1 - Formal letter - three separate letters
1/complaint, 2/ apology, 3/ persuasive
Teacher to make sure the students know how to use the
key words for each type of letter.
Activity 2 - Writing an informal email to a friend w/s
Teacher to explain how to set out an email. Students to
write an email to a friend describing their new home.
Activity 3 - Comprehension/research on Artist
(Vincent Van Gogh) and a letter to your art teacher about
what you have learnt.

2.2. Instruction writing (3.5 lessons)


Activity 1 - Write instructions for a task (imperative
words)
Teacher to explain what imperative words are.
Activity 2 - Write instructions on how to get to places
using
a map
Activity 3 - Planning a zoo/ Day at a zoo recount
Teacher to give students a coloured sheet of paper.
Students are told to plan out what their zoo might look
like from the entrance to the different animal cages and
kisoks. There should be landmarks and roads so that
he/she can describe how they moved around the zoo to
see the different animals.

Unit 3 - NARRATIVE WRITING


3.1

Story Beginnings (1.5 - 2 lessons)


Activity 1: Quick Recap of Story Elements 5 Ws
Activity 2 : Story Beginnings - w/s
Activity 3: Discuss importance of 5 senses in
storywriting w/b
Activity 4: Read Goodnight Gorilla (handout)
Activity 5: Plan and write one/two paragraphs
describing the zoo
At night. (planning sheet and w/b)

3.2 Importance of character description (2 lessons)


Activity 1: Talk about APH (Appearance, Personality
and Hobbies)
(under three different colums head Appearance,
Personality and
Hobbies and brainstorm with class
different descriptive words)
Have them write this in their workbook
Activity 2: Read the description of The Twits by Roald
Dahl
Complete exercises
3.3 Beginning dialogue practice (1 lesson)
Activity 1 - Talk about starting with dialogue, action
etc.
Activity 2 - Complete paragraphs with story openers
3.4 Explain Cause and Effect and Importance of Endings
(2 lessons)
Activity 1 - Cause and Effect exercises
Activity 2 - How to end a story

Activity 3 - Explain most stories are in 3 rd person


narrative.
The Fishing Story - Today you will change the story
from third
person and re-write in first person adding
the ending
3.4 Explaining different Genres
(2.5 lessons)
Activity 1: Genre worksheet
Activity 2: Writing a full narrative - Magic
