Development of UI and HL7 integration

for mining data from multiple ICU


Medical Devices
The client is a world leader in medical devices with
revenue of over $20 billion

The Challenge
The customer was conducting a research project
involving implementation of four of its IPs in the
areas of ICU patient care. The objective was to
enable preventive care through proactive
monitoring of patient data. The solution collects
enormous amount of data and then the data is
analysed, interpreted and sent back to the display
system
for
timely
patient
alerts.
The exchange of information was to happen in HL7
format through secured channels. The customers
choice of integration engines was Rhapsody. It
being a research initiative, dynamic changes were
expected in the requirements which caused scope
creep and demanded meticulous management of
the complete initiative. Testing was a crucial phase
and required real-time situations to be replicated
before the project could be declared a success.

For this purpose, generation of test data in the


absence of real medical devices was a challenge.

Solution Requirement
Facilitate collection of data received from an
array of medical devices in the ICU over a
secured channel.
Also, the collected data should be transformd
into actionable information for ICU managers to
help them take proactive measures for patient
care.

The Solution
HealthAsyst was required to develop the display
system using advanced Microsoft Technologies.

Healthcare Interoperability and Integration is one


of the strengths of HealthAsyst team. ICU data
transmitted from the devices was captured and
processed by software algorithms to identify
peaks and troughs and presented for display in
HL7 format. HealthAsyst team used Rhapsody
and interpreted HL7 data. HealthAsyst team
developed algorithms and business logic to
display this information with various filters
configurable by the user. This solution used
Microsoft Silverlight that provided a rich look and
a great user experience.
HealthAsyst with its rich experience is this field
resolved a highly complex problem of stress
testing that could have become an issue, with
ease.
Scarcity of resources knowledgeable to test an
interoperability solution such as this is in itself a
challenge. HealthAsyst team developed scripts
that generated mock HL7 data as if coming from
various devices under difference circumstances.
This huge volume of machine generated data
solved the problem of stress testing and helped
the teams identify the break point of the interface.
Approach

The team from HealthAsyst suggested an


innovative approach for testing and developed
tools and templates to simulate the data
transmission from numerous medical devices to
replicate real-time operating conditions.
HealthAsyst also recommended improvements to
the solution which were accepted and
incorporated immediately
