Easterns Phil Smart

presents athletic
overview of 2014-2015
school year to BOE
By ZANE CLARK
The Sun
As is tradition at the August
meeting of the Eastern Camden
County Regional School District
Board of Education, board members were treated to a report summarizing athletic activities at the
school for the prior school year.
At the boards Aug. 19 meeting,
Easterns vice principal of athletics Phil Smart was on hand to go
over athletic developments for the
2014-2015 school year.
For the year, Smart said Eastern continued to offer 27 sports
programs, and the overall participation rate for those programs increased by about 100 students
from the 2013-2014 school year.
According to Smart, much of
that growth was in Easterns winter programs, as the 2013-2014
school year had 278 students participating in winter sports, which
then rose to 355 students participating in the 2014-2015 year.
Smart said the growth was

Library system offers

online homework help
By ZANE CLARK
The Sun
With another school year soon
to be upon the young residents of
Voorhees, the Camden County Library System wants them and
their parents to know the
Voorhees Library and library system website are available to help
with homework needs.
In fact, the CCLS has an entire
page of its website dedicated solely to that purpose, with a list detailing what information can be
found in the various library
branches as well as what services
are offered.
By visiting the Kids Zone
section of the CCLS website at
www.camdencountylibrary.org
and selecting Homework Help,
young residents and their parents
can access all manner of home-

work assistance.
From search databases filled
with subscription articles, to online museums, to biographical directories, to information on science, math, language, art and
more, kids who need help with almost any subject can find the help
they need.
CCLS associate director David
Lisa said while the CCLS has a
large collection of print materials
in the systems various branches,
the CCLS also recognizes the nature of being able to find information is evolving.
We also offer a lot of online
materials because we know research has kind of evolved, and
kids as well as adults want quality online versions of information
resources, Lisa said.

unofficial end to summer has passed,
and with it, a return to a normal

to have a three-month vacation or not.
Back to school signifies a new beginning, maybe even more so for many
than the drop of the ball on New
Years. Its a time for looking ahead,
not for looking back.
Here at The Sun, back to school signifies the start of a busier time. In the
next few weeks papers, youll see coverage of the return to school from

your team, your son, your daughter,
your teachers, your group, your PTA,
your organization and your neighbors.
We want to congratulate Suzy on a

her schools honor roll, deans list or
when she receives academic recogni-

tion. We want to print photos of Johnnie waving goodbye to mom or dad as

he enters his new school for the first

We want to send a reporter to cover

School security of utmost importance in Voorhees

As a new school year approaches, it is of
utmost importance that a safe learning environment be provided for our students.
In an ongoing effort to protect our children, the Voorhees Township Committee
and our schools continue to work together
by putting police officers in all of our public schools.
Police Chief Lou Bordi has been at the
forefront of school security. He and other
members of his staff have attended several
seminars and have worked with school officials to make sure the most current security measures are in place.
Our children are our most important
asset and they must be protected.
Returning to school after a relaxing
summer can be a trying experience for
both children and parents. The American
Academy of Pediatrics offers help and
safety tips to ease back into the school year.
The first few days are always emotional,

especially
for
younger children.
Parents should emphasize the positive aspects of
starting school. Remind children of
the fun in seeing
old friends and
meeting new ones.
Find another child
in the neighborhood with whom
your youngster can
walk to school or
Michael
ride with on the
Mignogna
bus.
It is important
MAYORS MESSAGE
to develop good
homework
and
study habits. Create an environment that
is conducive to doing homework. Young-

sters need a permanent workspace in a

bedroom or a part of the home that offers
privacy. Set aside ample time for homework. Establish a household rule that the
TV stays off during homework time. Always be available to answer questions and
offer assistance. To help alleviate eye fatigue, neck fatigue and brain fatigue while
studying, children should take a 10-minute
break for every hour of study.
Too often, we hear of tragic accidents involving school buses. Children should wait
for the bus to completely stop before approaching it from the curb. Never move
around on the bus; always check to see that
no other traffic is coming before crossing.
Make sure to always remain in clear view
of the bus driver.
When traveling to and from school in a
car, all passengers should wear a seatbelt

Confirmed case of Malaria

no threat to public
By Freeholder Carmen Rodiriguez
Last week, the
Camden
County
Health Department
confirmed a case of
Malaria in Gloucester Township. This
incident was red
flagged and considered a significant
issue by first responders because
of a potential concern of Ebola.
All local, county and state personnel coordinated and exceeded all
U.S. Center for Disease Control
and Prevention (CDC) guidelines
while ensuring the health and
welfare of the community.
I am proud to report that this
was an outstanding response to a
significant public health and
safety exercise. Our first responders were able to work as a cohesive unit thanks, in part, to
Communicable Disease response
education provided last year by
Camden County at Camden
County College.
Earlier in August, an individual
who resides in Camden County
arrived home from a trip to Western Africa. In accordance with
mandated travel surveillance instituted by the CDC the Camden
County Health Department was
monitoring this individual twice
a day, for 21 days, for any symptoms of a communicable.
On Aug. 18, the patient exhibited a fever that from a precautionary
perspective
commissioned a full response by
first responders. The patient was
then transported to Kennedy
Health System in Stratford where
the patient was evaluated in isolation in the hospitals Emergency
Department and diagnosed with
Malaria.
Gloucester Township Mayor
David Mayer commended the
township resident, who is cur-

rently
being
treated, for her cooperation and her
great concern for
the community. The
resident was self-reporting to the Camden County Health
Department, and
when initial symptoms developed, she
contacted 9-1-1 immediately.
According to the CDC, Malaria
is spread by the bite of a female
Anopheles mosquito. The disease
can cause fever, chills, and flu-like
illness. If it is not treated, it may
cause severe complications and
possible death.
The combined efforts of the
Camden County Health Department, County Office of Emergency Management, Haz Mat
Team, County Communications
Center, Gloucester Township
EMS Alliance, Gloucester Township Police Department and
Kennedy Health are to be applauded. The work they did not
only met all protocols for this type
of incident, they exceeded all expectations with their professionalism and dedication to keeping
the public safe.
I want to reinforce that this case
of Malaria poses no health risk to
the general public. The Camden
County Health Department has
set up a hot line. For more information, contact the Camden
County Health Department at 1800-999-9045 or visit www.camdencounty.com.

Lisa said having the resources

They can go through what the

Parents who are cardholders
are also encouraged to help their
children take advantage of free
passes offered by the library for
about a dozen or so local museums and other area attractions.
The pass program is similar to
borrowing a book, in that adult
cardholders in good standing
with the library can check out a
museum pass for their entire family and use that pass for free admission to a specific museum or
attraction for up to four days.
The Voorhees Branch of the

Smart said he believed that
was due to Easterns swim coach
Theresa DeCoursey, who is also
the swim coach at the Voorhees

Theres a lot of continuity,
Smart said. Shes working with

Smart said the schools swim
teams also saw competitive success last year, as the boys and

Across all sports for 2014-2015,
Smart said Eastern had six stu-

to NCAA Division I schools, anywhere from 50 percent to full tuition.
The year also saw the school
with eight conference championships, and 24 of the schools 27
teams qualifying for the NJSIAA
tournament, which Smart said
was the largest number of teams
to qualify in his time at Eastern.
Smart also noted Easterns
well-known success in field hockey, with last years team once
again winning section and state
championships.
Its the 16th consecutive year,
so the field hockey program continues to roll, Smart said. Its
just amazing, and I look forward
to a great fall season.
Smart also spoke of the student athletic fee instituted in 2010
of $125 per student, $250 maximum per family. Last year, Smart
said the district instituted an option to pay via PayPal, which is

to pay by check, Smart said.
According to Smart, last year
the district raised more than
$100,000 for its athletic program
from student activity fees.
Smart also spoke about the efforts to replace the bleachers and
do work to the floors in Gyms 2
and 4.
Smart said the bleachers in
Gym 2 have already been removed to resurface the floor, and
new bleachers will be installed in
Gym 2 in November. At that time,
the bleachers will be removed
from Gym 4 while new flooring
will be placed where the bleachers were before, and when that
dries Gym 4 will receive its new
bleachers.
Smart said he expected all
work to be completed by Nov. 20.
