Kinnaird Primary School

NEWSLETTER
24th August 2015

Learn to Live. Live to Learn.

Physical Education / Health and Wellbeing

Kinnaird has a strong reputation for its commitment to sport e.g. we have previously won
Active Schools School of the Year award and were runners up the Larbert Cluster sports
competition last year which looked at our achievements across a range of sports and
activities. We are constantly striving to look to how we can further develop sporting
activities across the school. We are also having to work around the challenges of a rising
school population and only one gym hall.
We got a bit carried away with our enthusiasm for introducing regular walking activities and
the details of the plans for a mile a day in our August newsletter are incorrect. We
apologise for this! (Initial feedback from parents indicated their support for the promotion
of walking. Thank you for this!)
The Walk a Mile a Day project is classed as physical activity and not Physical Education
therefore will not form part of the 2 hours of PE a week calculation (with the exception of
classes getting a 45 minute PE lesson from a PE teacher.)
All classes will get either a 45 minute or 1 hour PE lesson with one of our PE specialists; Mr
Fraser and Mr Shields. Their class teacher is responsible for the delivery of a further hour
of PE each week. This will be undertaken outdoors. The PE teachers also make use of our
outdoor sports facilities. Classes receiving 45 minutes with the specialist teacher will also do
one 15 minute walk per week.
Class walks will still be utilised to support specific aspects of learning across the PE/Health
and Wellbeing or wider curriculum e.g. improving performance and fitness, linking to
numeracy (time/distance/speed/estimation) and healthy eating (diet balancing energy
input/output).
The PE specialist teacher team, based at Larbert High, have worked extremely hard over the
last year to develop detailed lesson plans and guidance for use in all of the Larbert Cluster
schools. These will be used by both specialist and class teachers and will help develop
consistency of practice and experiences across the cluster.
CLASS PE TIMES ARE AT THE END OF THIS NEWSLETTER.

PE Kit
It is essential that all children are participate in PE as this is a vital part of their curriculum.
Children will require two PE kits; an indoor kit and an outdoor kit. Items should be separate
from their school uniform i.e. not what they are wearing to school that day.
Indoor (Children usually leave these on their pegs in a drawstring bag.)

gym shoes, shorts and T-shirt (No football strips please.)

Outdoor (Sent home for washing if dirty/wet)

outdoor trainers, joggers, sweatshirt (or T-short and shorts from
indoor kit in good weather.) A waterproof jacket will also be
required.

School Sports Clubs and Active Schools

Mr Fraser (PE teacher) has already committed to running our Cross Country
Club (P5, P6 and P7), Football Club (P7), Basketball Club (P6 and P7) and
Country Dance Club (P6 and P7) again this year. Information about these
will be issued in due course.
Each year Active Schools organise a wide range of sporting clubs and events for schools. Lisa
Male has been our Active Schools coordinator for the last few years. This role will now be
undertaken by Chris Rose. We have already met with him and asked him to look in particular
at developing more opportunities for our younger year groups as there is already a lot in
place for the senior classes.

I Bike
The Larbert cluster is benefitting from having an I Bike Officer this
year, Niamh Allum. She is working in close partnership with Miss
Nichol (P6N) and our pupil Bike Crew to develop a range of activities,
training and events this year. She will help us tailor a structured
programme of cycling related activities for the whole school
community.
Our big launch will take place on 8th September with activities including a bike breakfast,
bike maintenance, a smoothie bike and design activities. Children will be encouraged to bring
their bike (and helmet!) or scooter to school that day. Wed love to get parents involved too!
Bikeability
The Bikeability programme will be rolled out in August and September with a series of
training events for teachers, support staff and school volunteers to build a team of qualified
cycle trainers based in each school. The training takes place over 6 hours, delivered over two
days as an after school session. If you would like to find out more, or would like to get
involved in the training please contact the school office.
For more information on Bikeability, please have a look the Bikeability Scotland website
