Seven Defences strongly exemplifies that the scaffolding of the medical practice
is GOD. The art of healing is not accomplished only by rectifying the patients body
alone. Such art must transcend deep into the patients soul. The mission of being a
doctor becomes holistic only when one gives the patient a new life, a new direction,
once he or she has been uplifted of his disease that is done by allowing GOD to
utilize our hands in the process of healing others. Moreover, some of the seven
defenses pointed out by the author would be essential in our growth as a medical
practitioner.
As catalysts of the medical field even the words we convey to our patients become
potent antidotes to their troubled bodies. The actual procedure or process of healing
is not yet administered into them but deep inside, the better change gradually
unfolds. Furthermore, the practice of medicine conforms to the change of times.
What was once an effective intervention before might not be the best one at
present.
Drugs administered to treat diseases can all be considered poisons. However, they
become poisons only if there is wrong preparation, wrong prescription and wrong
dosage. As the doctors of tomorrow there must be a need for us to take into much
deeper consideration pharmacology so as not to worsen a patients condition.
The road to becoming a doctor might be truly tortuous but not torturous if we walk
hand-in-hand with GOD. To seek His glory in our medical journey makes our
adventure enjoyable, fulfilling and blessed - not only we do heal our patient
physically but there is this mystic force enveloping us that somehow uplifts the
upheavals endured by our patients. Every day in a doctors life is a new block to be

hurdled but it is through these new challenges that we grow as the best healers we
can be.
Nowadays, it is sad to note that other doctors cure not out of love but out of thirst
for money. These doctors give a blind eye to the poor; they give their utmost
attention to those that have the means to meet ends. Such attitude is somehow
degrading to the profession we will swear oath upon. As stated in the text: Only
medicine done out of love will bear fruit. We, the new breed of doctors, must have
empathy and compassion towards the needs of our patients.
The 5th and 6th defenses pointed out by the author, being full of wrath and giving
coarse answers, might not be the proper thing to do when dealing with our patients.
We, the future doctors, must remember that these patients already have their inner
pains set forth by their diseases; we might not want to further burden them with our
rough attitude. True! We will encounter a lot of hardships and trying times as we
tread along (and these factors strengthen the healers in us), but we must remember
that our goal is become a holistic doctor. To become one is to be in Gods grace.
How will we be in Gods grace if we treat our patients in an unkind way?
Lastly, the process of healing is a gradual and systematic process. Doctors dont
just carelessly give right away their diagnosis just by looking at their patients. There
goes a series of laboratory tests that would aid in determining the TRUTH about
what the patient is experiencing.
