STUDENTS HOUSING

There is a common misconception that dormitories and apartments are the

same -They are actually different. Dormitories are usually only available for a
specific group of people such as students or personnel, they also have strict house
rules to follow. An Apartment is available to anyone and it offers a much wider
range of freedom. Dormitory users typically share common areas, like the living
room, the bathroom, and the kitchen. Apartments usually have personal living
rooms, bathrooms, and kitchens. Dormitories are usually within the parameters of
the campus and saves the users a lot of travel time and expenses.
While both of them has their own advantages and disadvantages, living in a
dormitory is much more suitable if one aims for improvement of their academic
performances and personal growth
The students room is the most important basic element in a students
housing. This space is the core environment of the users, as they spend most of
their time inside their rooms.Even though there are common areas, the users should
also be provided with their own personal space for privacy purpose.
A good design should be implemented as this will create a suitable
environment that provides excellent comfortability in doing ones common daily
activities. It is also important that the space is designed in a way that it will
enhance their productivity and output in their academic performances.
Some examples of the activities commonly done that should be taken into
consideration are:
1 . Studying Different people have different preferences in a suitable
environment to study. Adequate common study spaces should also be provided to
the demands of the users.
2. Sleeping - Different people have different sleeping patterns. This is evidently
present in college students due to their schedules. There should be alternative ways
to provide separation for sleeping and studying areas in multiple occupancy rooms
in order to avoid disturbance.
3 . Socializing - A good community provides good social interaction. This is where
the common spaces comes in. The spaces used for socializing is also important as
these contributes to the well-being of the users. Living inside a students housing

will teach one how to treat others as their own family, and communication is one of
the most important forms of socializing that should be promoted.
4 . Dressing - Adequate storage spaces should be provided to meet the needs of the
users.
SPACE ALLOCATION
Dimensions of student rooms.
The small room size creates constriction of movements, which is a big problem for
the users. Built-in furniture does not solve this problem as this limits the freedom
of the users to arrange their furniture layout, as for the movable furniture it is also
limited to their possible layout patterns.
Adequate space allocation within the student room must be prioritized so that
enough space is provided to allow both immediate individual expression by the
student and future arrangement by the university.
Several studies have recommended that a single student room of rectangular
shape containing 100 to 115 sq. ft.
The rationale for this recommendation is that a room must contain enough space to
provide the student with:
1. The furniture he needs,
2. Space for the use and service of this furniture (make beds or open drawers)
3. Possibility of a variety of furniture layouts.
