Breaking free from our daily routines and taking time to set aside utility and

pursue advancement in wisdom every once in a while are ways to amuse our mind
and feed our soul. As we grow older, we get so used with the things around us that
we are conscious of the impossible and try to live our lives out of necessity, out of
practicality, out of habit and for survival. Last December 7 and 8 in our Philo 10
fieldtrip, I had the chance to be acquainted with a life detached from my routine and
to experience seeing the world not only with my eyes but also with my mind.
Some of the central questions that we Filipinos rarely ask were answered in
our trip. These are How are historical events represented in the daily lives of
Filipinos and how has this shaped our cultural knowledge, beliefs and experience?
and How does the writing of history impact on how past events are perceived? In
attempting to answer those questions, it is essential that we are to link history,
philosophy and culture.
Our life is a journey. We move along and walk towards our final destination.
We are certain that we are heading towards something but we are not really sure
what it is. As we get closer and closer to this destination, we leave our footprints
behind and as we move forward, there are roads already built some are crossroads,
some are dead ends. We now then make careful and deliberate decision on which
path to take. Most people would choose to take the roads readily available for us.
But in cases of dead ends others trailblaze and pioneer a new path. Our history is
the footprints we leave behind. Some may be able to see it and decide to create
markers that someone has been there, that something happened at that time.
History is mans story and by story, it may be relayed and interpreted in many
different ways which results to various roads in which people choose to take in the
course of their journey. These different courses are the diverse culture which we
walk on throughout the journey. The acts of determining which road signs are
legitimate and which paths to take is philosophy. Philosophy filters history and from
this speculation, we are able to see eternity as a whole. The roads are infinitely
many just like the superabundance of truth that we try to seek but it is through
Philosophy that we strive to keep a rational balance between speculation and
reasoning. If we are successful in keeping this equilibrium, our journey then shared
in contemplating the greatness of the universe.
Filipino history has been shaped by our colonizers. Their influences are so
great that it resulted to the culture we have now. Filipino history and philosophy are
also embodied in the artworks in the Pinto Art Gallery. Paintings, sculptures and
photos convey the story of Filipinos through the years and how these events are
perceived and received by Filipinos who took time to reflect, open the horizon and
reveal the truth. The Spaniards may have done things that are not favourable to
Filipinos but we owe to them our Catholic religion which until now dominates the
country. From the churches, underground cemetery and towns we visited, I did
witness how strongly motivated Filipinos are when it comes to matters of religion.
The way in which Filipinos conduct their lives are deeply rooted from the teachings
of the Church. Here in the metropolis this preservation may not be evident anymore
but we have intellectual presuppositions on how best to live in the demands of our
lives.
The trip rejuvenated my body from all the stress of a students life and
pampered my mind and soul as a rational being. I got the chance to dig deeper

inside me matters that dont bother my everyday life but are very basic and
fundamental to my existence. This trip gave me a glimpse of the past for it is from
our roots that we can understand our history and present identity. Above all, this
trip made me realized that if we are open to learning, we can gain something from
asking.
