MCC receives survival swim
program funding
SIDNEY – Montcalm Community College recently
received a $1,500 mini-grant to help fund its survival
swim program for fourth-grade students at Central
Montcalm Upper Elementary School.
MCC’s award is one of 18 recently given by the
MEEMIC Foundation, a division of MEEMIC Insurance
Company. The Foundation annually awards $50,000
through its mini-grant program.

Folk singer/songwriter Cher-
yl Wheeler is performing a fund-
raising/benefit concert for Bell-
wether Harbor Animal Shelter at
the Dogwood Center on March 4
at 7:30 p.m. Wheeler is an ac-
complished performer and has
a strong following across the US
and is sure to provide a wonder-
fully entertaining performance.
Tickets go on sale beginning Jan-
uary 11.
If you are not familiar with
Cheryl, you have probably heard
her music. She is a gifted and
respected songwriter with her
songs being covered by artists as
diverse as Dan Seals, Peter Paul
and Mary, Garth Brooks, Suzy
Bogus, Bette Midler, Kathy Mat-
tea, and Holly Near. In 2009,
Kenny Loggins recorded her
song “Ghandi/Buddha” for his
recent Disney project called All
Join In.
Proceeds from the benefit
concert will go directly toward
the care of animals at Bellwether
Harbor Animal Shelter in Fre-
mont. Bellwether Harbor is a
nonprofit organization dedicated
to the health and wellbeing of
the abandoned, abused and ne-
glected dogs and cats coming to
the shelter. Through medical
care, socialization, training, and
sometimes rehabilitation Bell-
wether prepares the animals for
adoption with people looking for
forever companionship.
Bellwether Harbor is consis-
tently filled to capacity, at times
even beyond its limits. Expenses
for the care of the homeless ani-
mals is overwhelming at times
for the organization and proceeds
from Wheeler’s benefit concert
will be a great boost toward on-
going care for homeless animals.
Tickets for Cheryl Wheeler’s
concert go on sale beginning
January 11. Tickets are $15 in ad-
vance, $20 the day of the March
4 show.

“Hunt Of A Lifetime” is a non-
profit organization with a mission to
grant hunting & fishing adventures
and dreams for children age 21 and un-
der, who have been diagnosed with life
threatening illnesses. We are doing what
we can to make a difference in their life,
a dream come true.
Brandon McClure age 15 is a cancer
survivor and he and his Dad, Bill Mc-
Clure were granted a Hunt of a Lifetime
to Perryville, Alaska Oct. 3, 2009 to
hunt Coastal Brown Bear. After a very
intense hike through bear country they
spotted a trophy for Brandon to take.
Brandon and his Dad were successful
and harvested this 9’9” squared Coastal
Brown Bear.
Hunt of a Lifetime provided some
of the materials used to have a life-
sized mount done. Steve Pritchard (All
American Taxidermy) donated his time
and materials to mount it. NuCraft fur-
niture provided the wood for the base,
Ken Thomas assembled it. Brandon, Bill,
and neighbor Jack Woods helped in the
mounting process. The McClure family
would like to thank all the doctors and
nurses at DeVos Children’s Hospital for

fundraiser
set for March 7
Jimmy’s Roadhouse will
be hosting a fundraiser on
Sunday, March 7 and will donate
15 percent of all sales from this day
to the family of Emma Graham. We
invite the public to help the fami-
ly during this time of needed emo-
tional and financial support.
Below is a letter from a family
friend with further details regard-
ing Emma, her family and their
needs.
I am sending this e-mail in
hopes of raising some money for a
family that lives very close to us in
Newaygo. Their little girl, Emma
Graham age 14, has a malignant
brain tumor the size of a plum and
is located about 1” below the skull
in the center of her brain. We are
trying to offer something to help
Emma and her family fight. There
are a lot of things that need to be
done, things are being done cur-
rently, and there will be a lot of
things that will be needed as time
moves on. There will be a lot of
time missed from work for the par-
ents, and medical costs.
Emma developed a migraine
headache on Monday, Jan. 4, 2010,
that would not go away. She was
taken to the doctor Tuesday, and
then sent to the hospital for tests.
Wednesday the tumor was found,
and she had a biopsy surgery pre-
formed Friday January 8, 2010.
The tumor turned out to be malig-
nant. The procedure allowed a very
small portion to be removed and a
Chemo chip was placed next to the
tumor inside her brain. The pro-
cedure took quite a toll on Emma
and rehabilitation was required to
help her regain use of the right side
of her body.
Emma is a beautiful young
girl with the fight of a lion; how-
ever, she is going to need tons of
help. Due to the effects of the bi-
opsy, daily radiation treatments
and chemo therapy once a week,
her strength has been drained.

side since the beginning. Due to
these circumstances their home
required some modifications to
accommodate a wheel chair.
During the renovations
black mold was found and it is
required to be completely re-
moved. Emma’s immune sys-
tem will be extremely weak and
depleted, creating an inability
to fight of sickness caused by
outside factors.
Initial donations were raised
the first week and these dona-
tions covered the initial efforts
to eliminate the mold. However,
during this process everything
affected by the mold, including
household materials and affects
must be replace. Volunteers are
rallying to help, however, costs
are high and funds are low..
There are many other things
that need to be taken care and
time is short. This all needs to
be done before Emma can re-
turn home. I can not even imag-
ine what this family is going
through, or what they will go
through. We are hoping to re-
lieve their financial burdens so
they can concentrate on Emma.
The Newaygo Jr Lions Foot-
ball and Cheer are hosting a
fundraiser for Emma on March
7, at Jimmy’s Roadhaouse in
Newaygo. This event will run
from 11a .m. to 10 p.m.

Elizabeth Ann ‘Beth’ Miller
Elizabeth Ann “Beth” Miller, 51 of Sand
Lake, passed away Friday, February 19, 2010
at her home. Beth was born October 20, 1958
in Lakeview, MI. She was a 1976 graduate of
Tri-County High School. She was employed
as the Sand Lake Village Clerk for the last
16 years and had worked summers at Cedar
Chase Golf Club for the past 8 years. She
loved camping, biking, gardening and go-
ing on walks. Most of all she loved her fam-
ily and leaves behind a host of family and
friends. Surviving are her children, Sarah
Chicky, Douglas (Liz) Miller, Mandy Miller
& fiancé Balaji, Theodore (Amber) Miller,
Shanda (Keith) Hoogerhyde, Alyssa Mill-
er; 9 grandchildren; boy friend, Dale Fill;
mother, Jane Sherburne; siblings, Howard,
Martin, Brenda, Roland, Vanita, Katharine,
John, Walter, and Randolph; many nieces
and nephews. The family received friends

Wylda Jutila age 76 of Grand Rapids
passed away Feb 19, 2010, at her residence.
She was born March 23, 1933 in Barryton
the daughter of Percy and Mattie (John-
son Smith). Surviving are three sons John

Jutila of Stanwood, Jay Jutila of Grand Rap-
ids; four daughters Vickie (Jerry) Jansen of

Lee Earl Laper
Lee Earl Laper, age 81, of Howard City;
passed away Sunday February 21, 2010
at Spectrum Health’s Kelsey Campus in
Lakeview, MI. Lee was born April 25, 1928
in Lakeview, the son of George and Jessica
Baker Laper. He was raised in Lakeview on
his family’s farm and attended Lakeview
public school graduating Class of 1946. Lee
served his country during WWII with the
Army and was stationed in Alaska.
When Lee’s tour of duty was over, he was
self-employed as a Farmer for eleven years,
he worked for the Coral Elevator where he
started his next line of work; Lee was a truck
driver for over twenty years. Lee had many
hobbies including watching western movies,
motorcycles, semis, antique tractor shows,
tinkering, spending time back in the woods,
and his family. Lee is survived in death by
three children Jacquelyn (Kenneth) Kettler
of Howard City, Barbara (Waymond) Moore
of Stanton, Randy (Sandy) Laper of Howard
City; seven grandchildren; fifteen great-
grandchildren; four great-great grand-
children; one sister Ardeth (Ken) Keyt of
Lakeview; Joanne Laper; and many nieces,
nephews, and friends.
Lee was preceded in death by son Roger
Laper and daughter Sandy Laper; his par-
ents; one brother Ronald (Phyllis) Laper;
and five great-grandchildren; and his spe-
cial companion, Dawg. Memorial services
will be held on March 6, 2010 at 1:00 PM at
Crossroads Worship Center of Howard City.
A luncheon will be held following the ser-
vice. In lieu of flowers, memorial contribu-

Joan ‘Tinks’ Saboo Otten
Joan “Tinks” Saboo Otten, our Creator
has taken Tink by the hand to take her
home. Her earthly journey began December
3, 1952 and her sacred fire was started Feb-
ruary 20, 2010. Tink has walked on ahead of
her husband Robert, sons, Jim, Jake, Jack
and daughter Monica who were at her side
at home. Celebrating her life are mother,
Rose Saboo; brother, Joe (Judy), sister,
Donna; grandchildren, Shyla, Tristan, Chel-
sea, Leigh-Ann, Cloie, and Arianna Otten;
nieces, MacKenzie, Alec Kesis, Melanie;
nephew, Joey; aunts, uncles and cousins;
mother-in-law, June; brother-in-law, David
(Deb); sisters-in-law, Linda (Bernie), Betty
(Dave), Carol (Anton); several other nieces
and nephews. Her illness did not win, she
overcame it because she is now with our
Creator. She attended many Anishnabeck
events with her family and friends. Tinks
will be greatly missed at Pow Wows, Ghost
Suppers, Elders gatherings and so much
more! She touched so many people with her
love and open heart in the Native commu-
nity from newborns to the Elders. Family,
friends and “Buzzing Eagle Drum” gathered
at her home on Sunday. Tink’s wishes of
cremation has taken place and her family
will be taking her to Mission Hill Cemetery,
Bay Mills in the Spring. She would like to
give thanks to Dr. Scott, nurse Tammy, Tech
Brooklyn, R.A.I staff for their dedication.

Army Reserve Sgt. Stephen J.
Linderman is returning to the U.S. after
a deployment to Iraqi or Afghanistan in
support of Operations Iraqi Freedom or
Enduring Freedom, respectively.
The soldiers return to Fort Dix, N.J.
for debriefing, evaluations and out-pro-
cessing procedures before returning to
their regularly assigned Army Reserve or
National Guard units.
Linderman served in support of Op-
eration Iraqi Freedom in the Iraq Theater
of Operations. While deployed, he was
decorated with the Meritorious Service
Medal and the Army Achievement Medal
for his distinguished service.
The sergeant is an information tech-
nology system analyst assigned to the
450th Civil Affairs Battalion, based in
Riverdale, Md. He has served in the mili-
tary for four years.
He is the son of Donna and stepson of
Ernie Adams of Shaner Ave. N.E., Cedar
Springs, Mich.
In 1993, Linderman graduated from
Cedar Springs High School.
Army National Guard Spec. Joel
R. Ingersoll is returning to the U.S. af-

With the completion of the Michigan
Townships Association’s (MTA) intensive
Township Governance Academy (TGA),
they now have the access to enhanced
tools and decision-making processes that
will help shape their community for years
to come.
Both have earned MTA’s coveted TGA
credential, and were recognized during a
graduation ceremony held during MTA’s
57th Annual Educational Conference on
January 27, at the DeVos Place in Grand
Rapids.
Each is proud to be a TGA graduate
and believes the township will be better
served by the well-rounded educational
courses required for receiving this cre-
dential.
“The TGA program has been a valu-
able and worthwhile experience,” said
Porzondek. “I feel I have improved my
skills and am better equipped to serve my
constituents.”
“I’m proud to be one of a select few in
our county that has completed this won-
derful program,” says Stedman.
TGA is a voluntary credentialing pro-
gram intended to give township board
members and other local leaders cut-
ting-edge knowledge and expanded skills
needed to assist in making more effective
decisions for the benefit of their town-
ship. The Academy, which challenges
candidates to tie together learning and
practical experience, consists of 12 cours-
es and includes a requirement for elective
credits.
Created and administered by the
MTA Education Center, this program
is designed to professionally challenge
township officials by offering new ideas,
sharing best practices and providing a
hands-on approach to dealing more ef-
fectively with everyday issues that the
board may face.
Porzondek began serving Reynolds
Township as deputy clerk in 2005. She
has been a member of the Michigan As-
sociation of Municipal Clerks since 2006
and a new member of the Lions Club In-
ternational.
Stedman began serving Reynolds
Township as treasurer in 2003. He is a
40 year member of the American Legion
and is currently serving on the executive
committee.

the University of Michigan and Michigan

tion about Animal Agriculture as a Sector
of Michigan’s Economy (March 8) – This
session, sponsored by the MSU Extension
Animal Agriculture and the Environment
Team, will discuss the available science
addressing animal agriculture issues. Par-
ticipants will also be able to interact with
a wide variety of scientists, researchers
and stakeholders to expand the collective
understanding of how animal agriculture
could evolve in Michigan.
n CHOICES: Collaboration: There’s
Room at the Table (March 10-11) – This
conference, sponsored by MSU Extension
and the Michigan Nutrition Network, ex-
plores a variety of viewpoints about food
choices and will feature how to conduct a
successful community garden project; nu-
trition trends on the horizon; how to select
and prepare heart-healthy, child-friendly
meals and much more.
In addition, ANR Week is the setting
for several annual meetings and confer-
ences, including:
n Michigan State Rabbit Breeders
(March 5-7), which includes exhibition and
judging of more than 3,000 rabbits and ca-
vies;
n Michigan Wildflower Conference
(March 7-8), which will focus on preserv-
ing and restoring biodiversity in generally
urban and suburban yards;
n 82nd Michigan FFA Convention
(March 10-12), which is themed, “Envision
the Goal, Embrace Your Journey”;
n Michigan Barn Preservation Network
Conference (March 12-13), which offers
barn enthusiasts and barn owners an op-
portunity to learn more about Michigan’s
agricultural heritage and historic farm
buildings; and
n Michigan Herb Associates Annual

Some of you are not even aware that there is controversy around vaccinations. We have been
conditioned to believe that they are necessary and safe. There are some reasons to think they are
not necessary and there are definitely safety issues.

Autism, and ADD/ADHD. The 50 plus vaccines give a huge mercury load which the body has a hard
time eliminating.
Another issue is that most of the vaccines carry foreign DNA. That does
not mean Dutch DNA which might make our kids smarter (ha, ha), it means
monkey, sheep, and chicken DNA which are used to make the vaccines. Some
people believe that HIV came through vaccines in the form of SIV which came
from contaminated monkey (Simian) blood that was used to make vaccines.
One other concern is that immunizing against specific viruses and by not
experiencing any of the usually viral childhood illness we are decreasing our
general immunity against viruses. If this is true, we are much more vulnerable
to a super bug epidemic that some people are predicting. It is too late for all
of us who have been immunized, but should we keep doing this to our new
children? This is a good question. You may want to investigate more.

Although run-flat tires were introduced

in 1994, they have only recently become
available on more vehicles. Currently, there
are two basic types: self-supporting tires (SST)
and patented auxiliary support tires (PAX).
Both are designed to support the weight of
a vehicle for 100 miles or more and allow
drivers to continue moving down the road
until they can find a shop to repair the flat.
SSTs rely upon heavily reinforced sidewalls
to support the vehicle’s weight, while PAXs
rely upon semi-rigid support rings.
Run-flat tires offer many benefits, most
importantly, convenience. Drivers don’t have
to worry about pulling over and changing
a flat tire. They can leave that to the repair
shop. They don’t have to carry all of the
tools necessary for changing a flat tire,
giving them more space for other things.
Some auto manufacturers, in fact, have taken

weight and using more gas. According to some
consumers, run-flat tires do not last nearly as

As run-flat tires become more commonplace,
the problems with them will no doubt be
worked out. In the meantime, consumers may
want to take the purchase of a vehicle with
run-flat tires into serious consideration. They
should learn all that they can about the tires,
including how much they cost and how easily
they can be repaired and replaced.

You may not know what end of a wrench to hold,
but anybody can get a grip on these helpful car
care tips.
Get the soap — Perhaps the simplest thing to do
to take care of your car is to wash it on a regular
basis. Washing your car once a week can help
keep at bay the bugs, tar and other debris that
can build up over time. Given a foothold, these
things can become nearly impossible to clean
off. If you can’t manage a once-a-week wash, try

month and you have kids, hire ‘em out.
Check the oil. Stat! — Your car’s oil is like its
blood. It needs to be checked regularly. Check

Today new vehicles come with all sorts of
extras like heated seats, satellite radio and
navigational systems. Not everyone can
afford a new vehicle, though, but fortunately
for them, there are options. They can install
many of the extras in their current vehicle,
including a GPS system.
There are three types of GPS systems to
choose from. These include:
• In-dash systems are usually permanent and
require professional installation. This type of
system consists of a car stereo with a built-
on monitor (of varying sizes), a hideaway
connection box containing A/V inputs and
outputs, and an external GPS antenna. The
stereo replaces the factory model currently
in the vehicle and the hideaway goes under
the front seat or is mounted behind the dash.
When the system isn’t in use, it can be used
to watch DVDs.
• Portable systems have smaller screens and
can be moved from one vehicle to another.
This type of system consists of built-in
speakers, integrated GPS antenna, voice
prompts and touchscreen controls. Some
come with the ability to make hands-free
calls and voice command recognition. The
system attaches to the dash or windshield
and plugs into the cigarette lighter. Portable
GPS systems should be installed in a place
level with the instrument panel but out of
the way of the air bags. To prevent glare, the
screen should be angled toward the driver.
• Handheld systems also have smaller
screens but can be moved from one vehicle to
