About the Course

About the Expert Course Director

Roy Hudson
Roy has over 35 years of experience in the
railway industry, 32 of those in the speciality
of electrification, incorporating feasibility, design
and development through to planning, estimating,
procurement, construction, testing, commissioning
and handover. Roy also assesses and trains
design engineers.

Electrification has many advantages over alternative forms of traction, but

it requires significant capital expenditure for installation. This course will
examine the business case for electrification over diesel traction, and the
differences between various AC/DC systems.
It is important to understand the significance of electrification in terms of
an overall rail project, its role, influence and the changes that are/have to
be made to ensure its a worthwhile investment.
Requirements, constraints and considerations of an electrified railway
from a project management perspective will be discussed. The planning,
designing, constructing, operating and maintaining factors will be
systematically discussed.
Case studies will be looked at throughout the course to help participants
apply theory to practice drawing from Roys vast international experience
working on numerous electrification projects.
The course will spend time on electrification system design considerations
such as environmental/aesthetic factors, system choice (AC/DC/
overhead, 3rd rail), train requirements, materials, voltage systems, traction
distribution, earthing, bonding, network effects, testing and commissioning.
It will also look at operational factors, such as train frequency, required
performance, emergency/safety procedures and constructing and
maintaining electric railways the requirements and constraints.

Who Will Benefit

He has experience with managing major projects involving: periodic

maintenance, new works, upgrades, plant and equipment procurement.
He also has experience with design, asset condition assessment, surveys
and construction of electrification projects and multidisciplinary railway
projects including heavy and light rail, AC/DC overhead systems, DC 3rd
rail systems and 11/33kV AC transmission lines.
Roy originally came to Australia as an electrification consultant engineer
in 1987 bringing with him 7 years of experience of railway electrification
design and construction. Then, over a 12 year period he worked on
numerous electrification design, construction, asset assessment and
development projects in NSW (1500V and 750V DC), Queensland (25kV
AC) and Western Australia (25kV AC).
Upon returning to the UK in 1999 Roy was seconded into the UK Railway
Authoritys Major Projects Group delivering both AC and DC overhead
electrification design and construct projects in England and Scotland.
At the same time he was an electrification construction manager and
technical head for his parent company.
Roy returned to Australia in 2006 to join the NSW Railway Authoritys
Renewals Group delivering Major Periodical Maintenance (MPM) projects
and plant renewal programs. Then in 2008 joined a major electrification
construction company where he is currently the professional head of
overhead wiring systems.

Course Level: Fundamentals

This course will benefit managers, planners, investors, engineers,
technicians, construction staff or graduates from both inside and outside
the railway industry that are, or maybe involved in current and/or future
railway electrification projects.
There will be some technical elements referred to in the course
specifically in the system design section; however they will be explained in
context. Participants will be encouraged to ask questions to improve their
understanding.
