The periodic table is a diagram which includes chemical
elements arranged in order of increasing atomic
number and in a way that reflects the structure of the
elements.
The elements are arranged in seven horizontal rows
called periods and in 18 vertical columns called groups.
The first period (the first row) containing two
elements, hydrogen and helium, and the next two
periods, each with eight elements are called short
periods.
The remaining periods, long periods called contain 18
elements in the case of periods 4 and 5, or 32 elements
in the period 6.
The long period 7 includes the actinide group, which
has been completed by synthesizing radioactive nuclei
beyond element 92, uranium.
Vertical columns or groups of the periodic table are
traditionally classified from left to right using Roman
numerals followed by the letters 'A' or 'B', where 'B'
refers to the transition elements.
