Definition: Verb Phrase

consisting of a verb, its auxiliaries (helping verbs), its complements, and other modifiers.
Auxiliary verbs always come before the main verb.
A verb phrase is a syntactic unit that corresponds to the predicate. There are two types
of auxiliary verbs. Inflected auxiliary verbs e.g. be, have, do and Modal auxiliary verbs
e.g. will, should, must etc.

The verb phrase may contain one verb (simple):
Richard came yesterday.
Or more than one verb (complex):
Richard is coming today.
English also has auxiliary verbs which help the main verb to make up a verb phrase.
They are:
be, have, do, and the modal auxiliaries will, can, could, may, might, shall,
should, must, used to.
The shops will open tomorrow. The shops have opened today. The shops were
opening at 9:00am. The shops used to open at 8:00. etc
