    Thecompanyhasagreeda$4.6bndealtobuildtwo600MWcoalfiredpowerplantsonan
    EDITORIALGUIDES
    islandintheBayofBengal,32kilometresfromthebeachresortofCox'sBazar.

    TwoJapanesecompanies,SumitomoCorpandMarubeniCorporation,havebidto
    participateintheconstructionproject.
    InBangladesh,dailyblackoutslastaslongasfivehours.Thecountryproduces8,000MW
    ofelectricity,butdemandfarexceedssupply,withadailydeficitofupto1,500MW.

    NasrulHamid,juniorministerforpower,energyandmineralresources,saidunlessthe
    countrycanboostitsenergyproductionitwillfailtoachieveatargetofbecomingamiddle
    incomecountryby2021.
    ConstructiononthetwopowerplantsisscheduledtostartinMarch2016,withoperations
    setforAugust2022.
