Basic English

Course Description
(Non-credit course required for students who do not qualify
for English I. Grading: Pass/Fail)
This course is offered to first semester students who need to
improve their basic English language skills in order to
succeed in university level English courses. With the focus on
providing an intensive practice of modern English usage the
course includes elements of sentence and contextual
grammar, active and passive vocabulary, face-to-face
communication, group discussions, word games, questionanswer sessions, and paragraph writing. The four language
skills - listening, speaking, reading and writing - are
integrated.
Course Objectives
This course would enable the students to:
Enhance vocabulary and conversational skills
Develop understanding of grammar terms and four skills i.e. listening, speaking, writing
and reading
Improve the use of grammar, parts of speech, tenses and punctuation
Skillful use of dictionary to grasp the meanings of words
Participate in class discussions
Attempt different exercises online to stimulate their interest in the course
After Mid Term
Develop proper and coherent paragraphs
Improve the ability to present their points of view during class discussion.
Improve fluency in speaking and give extempore presentations in standard English
Intensive practice of different course contents including paragraph writing, reading,
listening and speaking skills along with vocabulary development and grammar.
Revise all the topics and assignments and maintain a portfolio containing all
assignments and material used during the course
Course Requirements
In order to receive credit for the course, the students must:
Complete all in-class and out-of-class assignments as specified by the instructor.
Maintain a portfolio of the revised work.
Receive a passing grade (C or better) in Mid-term and Final term exams.
Attend tutoring sessions as assigned.
Comply with the attendance and work policy.
Course Policies
All work must be submitted on time.
In case of late submission, the student will lose ten percent of assignment grade.
After five absences you will not be allowed to take the final exam.
The students must observe class timings. Tardiness will affect the attendance credit.
(Five minutes relaxation can be given on genuine reasons)
The students must purchase and bring a Cambridge pocket dictionary

The students have access to the Internet and use it whenever needed.
Teacher reserves the right to change to modify the course to meet the objectives.
