Organised by a man known as SOUNRYU in 1569. SOUNRYU lived in RIKUZEN-FUNAGAWA near
SANROKU mountain. He was believed to be a wandering Taoist sage. The RYU contained techniques
of TAIJUTSU, BOJUTSU, and SHURIKEN JUTSU. After a few generations it was then headed by
ORIEMON SHIGENOBU TAKAGI. He is considered the actual founder of the RYU. He successfully
concluded a number of matches with the YAGYU RYU. The RYU then passed to UMANNOSUKE
SHIGETADA TAKAGI. He added elements of the TAKAUCHI style of JUJUTSU and the ZEN school of
thought from training with monk GUDO WASHO of the CHUZAN temple. The form of TAKAGI YOSHIN RYU
JUTAIJUTSU practised within the BUJINKAN stems from the teachings of YAGI JIGERO HISAYASHI
founded 4 generations ago. The significant differences of the JUTAIJUTSU delivered in the TAKAGI YOSHIN
RYU and that of JUDO and AIKIDO is that the techniques are executed in such a way as to make the
opponents UKEMI very difficult to do. The reason for this is that when the RYU was developed (devilled-up)
armor was worn and standard punches and kicks did not have much affect.
TAKAKIYOSHIN- RYU has a number of levels to include:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------KIHON WAZA - basic skills as break falls, blocks, counter-strikes and hold releases.
SHODEN no GATA
CHUDEN no SABAKIGATA
CHUDEN no tai no GATA
OKUDEN no GATA
ERI SHIMEGATA
MOGURI GATA
There are also techniques for dealing with weapons while unarmed and techniques to counter all the other
techniques mentioned above.
Significant mention are that the techniques have special attributes to include surprise attacks by kick out the
opponents legs, pain chokes and holds, nerve strikes and throws, and quick drops to the ground to throw
opponents.
TAKAGI YOSHIN RYU (JUTAIJUTSU)
Hatsumi SENSEI is 17th SOKE of TAKAGI YOSHIN RYU. The founder was ORIEMON SHIGENOBU
TAKAGI.
----------------------------------------------------------Remark: TAKAGI YOSHIN RYU has no specific KAMAE.

In 1569 during the YEIROKU era (1568 - 1579) in the FUNAGATA YAMA mountain area of MIYAGI, a
mountain priest from the ABE family, called UNRUY (cloud dragon),m was an expert in the SHURIKEN,
BOJUTSU, and TAIJUTSU from the "AMATSU TATARA RINPO HIDEN MA KIMONO". The AMATASU scroll
was kept by the ABE, NAKATOMI, and MONOBE families. The "DAI NIPPON BUGEI HA" gives UNRYU
name as SOUNRYU. He was a wandering TAOIST monk, living in RIKUZEN FUNAGAWA, not far from
SANROKU mountain. UNRYU taught his system with the YARI called "SESSHO HIDEN NO JUTSU", to ITO
KI-I (ITO SUKESADA), another famous martial artist of his time.
ITO SUKESADA was a SAMURAI from KATAKURA KOJURO, in FUKUSHIMA province. He taught the
techniques that would starting point of the future TAKAGI YOSHIN RYU to TAKAGI ORIUEMAN
SHIGENOBU, a young SAMURAI from TOHOKU-SHIRAISHI HAN ( In the northern part of JAPAN).
SHIGENOBU was 126 years old when he started training, and was later given the MENKYO KAIDEN when
he was just 20 years old. SHIGENOBU was born 2nd April 1625 (another source says 2nd Jan. 1635), and
died 7 th October 1711.
SHIGENOBUs father was called SANZAE MON INATOBI, also retainer of the KATAKURA KOJURO the
DAIMYO of the TOHOKU - SHIRAISHI HAN. SHIGENOBU was the second son. SANZAEMON was attacked
in the middle of the night in a dark alley, and died a violent death. At this time SHIGENOBU was called
UMON, but he changed his name at the time of his fathers death to TAKAGI ORIUEMON SHIGENOBU.
SHIGENOBU avenged his fathers death, remembering his advise that his father had earlier given him, " A
willow is flexible, but a high tree is breakable".
He revised, and improved, the techniques that he had learnt, and put them together into what what known
then as "TAKAGI YOSHIN RYU", naming it after himself.
The YAGYU RYU were in the 1600s , the sword instructors to the TOKUGAWA SHOGUNATE. It is also
possible that they were involved in some form of NINJUTSU activities. TAKAKI arranged several duel with
them. He fought a match against YAGYU TAJIMA NO KAMI, but he lost this fight. After this he went up onto
Mount KURAMA for 37 days. It was here that he released the importance of your opponents eyes.
ORIUEMON then arranged a rematch with TAJIMA. As they faced each other, ORIUEMON raised his sword
so that it pointed directly at TAJIMAs eyes, because of his TAJIMA knew that he could not win, and that
they would both die they fought each other. They declare the match a draw without crossing swords,
ORIUEMON at this time was only 23 years old.
One of ORIUEMONs teachers, DANEMON MUTO, was from the YARI school (SOJUTSU) called KYOCHI
RYU. MUTO was retainer of YOSHIHIDE in HIDACHI in DEBA (Northern JAPAN).
The school passed onto TAKAGI UMANNOSUKE SHIGETADA. UMANNOSUKE started to study under
ORIUEMON in 1671 (KANBUN 11), when he too was just 16 years old, adding many new techniques from
the JUJUTSU school "TAKAUCHI RYU". He, however, taught the school as "TAKAGI YOSHIN RYU
DAKENTAIJUTSU", BOJUTSU, SOJUTSU, NAGINATAJUTSU, and SENBAN NAGE. In 1695 he was
recognised by the Emperor as a high class martial artist. He also studied ZEN with a monk called GUDOWASHO, from CHUZEN temple. SOME of the ZEN attitudes were also introduced to the teachings of the
school. UMANNOSUKE travelled extensively throughout JAPAN teaching his system of DAKENTAIJUTSU.
HE died 26 April 1746.
TAKAGI GENNOSHIN HIGESHIGE was the son of UMANNOSUKE. He taught in HYOGO province. He was
good at the DAKEN TAIJUTSU, but changed the name again to TAKAGI YOSHIN RYU JUTAIJUTSU.
OHKUNI KIHEI SHIGENOBU was a SAMURAI, and an expert from the KUKISHINDEN RYU. He, and
GENNOSHIN fought a small contest, to test each other ability. The TAIJUTSU of the TAKAGI YOSHIN RYU
was superior to the KUKISHINDEN RYU TAIJUTSU, but the KUKISHINDEN RYU BOJUTSU was superior to
that of TAKAGI YOSHIN RYU. Afterwards OHKUNI was invited to stay, and teach his system to TAKAGI
YOSHIN RYU. These two SOKE rearranged the two making TAKAGI YOSHIN RYU just TAIJUTSU, and the
KUKISHINDEN took the BOJUTSU. GENNOSHIN became ill, and died on 2nd October 1702. He asked
OHKUNI, just before his death to continue the teaching in the new way that they had created together.
OHKUNI then renamed SCHOOLS HON TAI TAKAGI YOSHIN RYU. Later OHKUNI was split the schools up
again. The TAKAGI YOSHIN RYU, has still retained some of it's BOJUTSU.
October 1841, YAGI JIGERO HISAYASHI, a retired SAMURAI from AKOH castle in HYOGO province,
became a RONIN. He later settled down, and opened a DOJO in AKASHI, HYOGO. YAGI passed on the
RYU to three students giving each the MENKYO KAIDEN. There were ISHITANI TAKEOI, and FUJITA
TOGORO. FUJITA taught TAKAGI YOSHIN RYU, and passed the school onto MIZUDA YOSHITARO, who in
turn taught TAKAMATSU.
When YAGI gave out the MENKYO KAIDEN, he did so to only two students. These were ISHIBASHI, and
MIZUDA. HE did not give one to ISHITANI. One day as YAGI was walking in the OKURA valley, he was
attacked by ISHITANI, who was carrying a drawn KATANA. YAGI ran to a nearby house. removed a piece of
a wood from it and threw it at ISHITANI, so that he could male his escape,. The next night ISHITANI arrived
for training, as if nothing had happened the night before. YAGI took him to a room at the rear DOJO, and
gave him the MENKYO KAIDEN scrolls to the TAKAGI YOSHIN RYU. As they left the room., YAGI said to
him "who would give you your licence if I was dead". ISHITANI went on to open seven TAKAGI YOSHIN
RYU DOJOs in JAPAN. All of these he was regular visitor, to aid in the teaching. Once when he was in
OSAKA he was attacked by two SUMO men called "KONISHIKI", and "YATSUKA". They held him down,
and invited him to escape. He did so by attacking their legs. YAGI died around 1898.
It is not known if ISHIBASHI opened a DOJO, but TAKAMATSU once fought a licenced student of his by the
name of "Demon of OKURANTANI village" . ISHITANI taught HON TAI TAKAGI YOSHIN RYU, and HON TAI
KUKISHINDEN RYU. He passed these two schools onto his son, who also became SOKE of SHINDEN
TATARA RYU. He learnt this from AKIYAMA YOTARO. One reason he went to the SHINDEN TATARA RYU,
which is supposed to have strong links with the KUKI SHINDEN RYU, was because ISHITANI MATSUTARO,
had eloped with one of his fathers mistresses. His father sent him the MENKYO KAIDEN to the TAKAGI
YOSHIN RYU, and KUKISHINDEN RYU via AKIYAMA. ISHITANI taught these schools to TAKAMATSU
between 1903 -1905.
When ISHITANI MATSUTARO, the son of ISHITANI TAKEOI, died in the arm of TAKAMATSU, he instructed
TAKAMATSU (rope binding). The present SOKE is , SOKE INOUE TSUYOSHI 9th DAN.
The transmission of the TAKAGI YOSHIN RYU scroll from MIZUTA to TAKAMATSU, took place on a
auspicious day in the 8th month MEIJI 40 (AUGUST 1908).
The transmission of the TAKAGI YOSHIN RYU scroll from TAKAMATSU TOSHITSUGU to HATSUMI
MASAAKI, took place on a lucky in the 5th month SHOWA 33 (May 1959).
The TAKAGI YOSHIN RYU, takes its techniques further than those of JUDO and AIKIDO. When the
techniques are applied, kit is made as difficult as possible for your assailant to escape by rolling and break
falling. This style of JUJUTSU comes from within the building, unlike other styles which originated outdoors.
Therefore the techniques result with the opponent being, locked, or held closed to the body, instead of
throwing him a distance away from you. You are trained to use his own weight, and momentum against
himself.
In the TAKAGI YOSHIN RYU look at the eyes, and use speed.

students, KADONO HACHIHEITA. He named his DOJO "HON TAI YOSHIN RYU". In JAPAN the present
SOKE of this RYU-HA is INOUE TSUYOSHI. KADONO gave MENKYO KAIDEN to three people, these are
MINAKI SABUROJI, WAKITA SEI ICHI, and TSUTSUI YOSHIHISA (TAKAGI RYU JUTAIJUTSU). MINAKI was
the teacher of INOUE.
