Introduction
The Word of God is infallible. Reiki is here measured against the Word of God.
This document is in reaction to Reiki practitioners endeavours to have their methods being accepted in health
care institutions, especially amongst children. Notwithstanding the total lack of scientific proof as to the
efficacy thereof in any healing process.
Such inroads have already been made elsewhere and this short introduction is aimed at all, Christians and Reiki
practitioners included, who might lack background in the relationship of the True and Living God and Reiki.
An appeal is hereby made to all Reiki practitioners and those valuing it to repent, come to Christ, acknowledge
Him as God and finally tap into the real Power of this universe in the humility befitting a sinner and thus
experience true freedom, true peace and eternal healing and the bliss of sharing this grace!

Purpose
The purpose of this inquiry is to find answers to questions and shed light on areas of thought and practice
which under normal circumstances are unknown or at best clouded and hence not understood.
In so doing this short elucidation will, without pulling punches and without attempts or claims to being
politically correct try to get as near the truth as possible.

What is understood by the Occult?

Some definitions:
The word occult comes from the Latin word occultus (clandestine, hidden, secret), referring to "knowledge of
the hidden1
 Angelic and demonic forces play a large part in the practices which make up a part of the occultic
world. Some of those practices entail the use of astrology, fortune telling, the Ouija Board, spirit
channeling, and witchcraft2
 Regarding the connection with spiritualism:
Spiritualism also differs from occult movements, such as the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn or
the contemporary Wiccan covens, in that spirits are not contacted to obtain magical powers (with the
exception of power for healing). For example, Madame Blavatsky (183191), the founder of the
Theosophical Society, only practiced mediumship to contact powerful spirits capable of conferring
esoteric knowledge. Blavatsky did not believe these spirits were deceased humans, and held beliefs in
reincarnation different from the views of most Spiritualists. [2] Spiritualists at that time viewed
Theosophy as unscientific and both occultist and cult-like. Theosphists viewed Spiritualism as
unsophisticated and uncosmopolitan.[7]3
[It is important to note the above caveat with the exception of power for healing]
 As many groupings would like to distance themselves from the occult, the occult having a negative
connotation, it is interesting to note that there is a definite coherency amongst groupings which are,

 On http://www.occultresearch.org/cults-explained.htm no attempt is made to define occult (although
the word is used in their name)5 and cult is broadly defined as anything not Christian.
 The Ontario Religioustolerance.org6 define the occult as A set of mostly unrelated divination and/or
spiritual practices or activities which appear to tap into forces that have not been explained by
science, and which are not conventional practices seen in traditional religions. 7 no explanation is given
as to their definition of words like traditional religions
According to occultists the following will resort under the term occult 8:
 Divination: Various harmless methods of foretelling the future:
 Astrology: The concept that one's future is dependent upon the precise location of the sun,
moon and planets at the time of birth.
 I Ching: an ancient Chinese oracle book which some believe can be used to foretell the
future, answer questions, etc. The practitioner generates a number from 1 to 64 by selecting
sticks, or casting dice or coins. The oracle book assigns different meanings to each of the
possible numbers.
 Numerology: the practice of assigning a digit to each letter in a person's name, and deriving
a series of numbers which have special significance to the person.
 Palm reading: foretelling a person's future by the creases in their palm and shape of their
fingers.
 Runes: a group of from 16 to 31 (typically 26) letters of an ancient Northern European
alphabet. The letters are inscribed on small rocks or pieces of paper or plastic. A group is
cast, and the future foretold from the runes that land inverted and not inverted, as well as
from their position.

Scrying: A technique of producing visions of the future by gazing into a crystal ball, black
mirror, bowl of water, hot coals from a fire, etc.
 Tarot cards: fortune telling through the use of a pack of 78 Tarot cards which can be divided
into four suites (wands, cups, pentacles and swords). 1 Each suite has number cards (ace to
10), a king, queen, knight and knave. In addition, there are 22 additional cards which form
the greater arcana; they include the Chariot, High Priestess, Juggler, Lovers, Moon, Sun,
Strength, Death, Devil, etc. The cards are shuffled; a few are dealt and laid in a specific
formation (circle, cross, square, etc.). The cards are interpreted according to their inherent
meaning, as modified by the significance of their location.
 Teacup reading: foretelling the future by the shapes formed by tea leaves after a cup of tea
has been consumed
 Other methods: Future events have been predicted through the use of dice, dominos, dream
interpretation, pendulum movements, playing cards, etc.
 Religious and Spiritual Pursuits: These are normally a group of unrelated minority religions:
 Eastern religions, such as Hinduism, Buddhism, Taoism, etc.
 Syncretistic religions from the Caribbean, such as Santeria and Vodun.
 Satanism.
 Wicca, and other Neopagan religions.
 Magick: This is a list that includes ceremonial magick and many other schools of practice
involving rituals and spells. They are used to change the environment, in order to reach the
magician's goals.
According to the Caros9 Occult Lodge10 in Amsterdam the occult is a science involving inter alia: (from their
study curriculum)
1. Discovery of ones self without limitations
2. Enhancing concentration possibilities
3. Projection of the unconscious
4. Analyze of the Complex of Feelings
5. Working with Tattwa Symbols
6. Realizing and working with emotional connections to the elements
7. Understand of certain magical treatments
8. Keeping control of your own emotions
9. Learning how to use the energy found within yourself
10. Working together in a group
11. Meditation
12. Psychometrics
13. Tests, when passed, the student enters into the next level
During the second study year (first year neophyte) students study the following:

The non-profit organization Caros was set up in 1982 and was born out of a group of occultists, who called themselves
"The Stork-Lodge", who were a group that made Amsterdam it's home in 1860. Using the knowledge that has survived
through time this organization passes on this knowledge and has since created an excellent reputation in the realm of
Occult Knowledge, Teachings and Rituals of Higher Magic, and Authentic Knowledge and Teachings of Wicca (i.e.
Witchcraft).

During the third year study year, ( second year neophyte) the students will be busy with the

This group also states that ...exercises are used to train one's self to get in touch with the
collective consciousness of the Spiritual World12
Pastor John Piper defines the occult as :
Anything dealing with the world of spirits or of supra-normal forces, dealings which are not
oriented on Jesus Christ as He is revealed in the Bible13 with this definition he assumes the
reality of a spirit world and the reality of those supra-normal forces. He assumes that the
church makes a very grave mistake when it says those things only happen in another age or
that only Godly people can perform miracles14. He is broad in his definition and it includes
anything from Satan worship to the reading of horoscopes 15. He includes in cultic behaviour
all séances, communicating with the dead, PSI, ESP all forms of supra-normal psychic

phenomena real magic as opposed to sleight of hand tricks fortune telling, casting of spells,
wearing of charms, use of ouija-boards, astrology etc.16
This definition would encompass the Biblical, i.e. Gods point of view as reflected in the Bible
(see footnote 27).

What has to be noted from the definition given by Piper, as representative of the Christian point of view,
reflecting the Bibles perspective and other definitions is their similarity. In other words, although there are
differences in nuances etc., broadly speaking the Christian definition and the non-Christian definition of the
occult is the same.

The Occult and Reiki

In order to ascertain whether Reiki is part of the occult the following similitude should be noted:
-getting guidance from spirits of dead or living persons or animals
-connection and using of a higher force
-the use of charms, stones and other objects
-contact with angels
-casting of spells
-spiritual protection
-chakras
-chanting
-necromancy
Reiki would resort under the definition of occult as given by the Ontario Religioustolerance.org, to wit :
A set of mostly unrelated divination and/or spiritual practices or activities which appear to tap into
forces that have not been explained by science, and which are not conventional practices seen in
traditional religions17
The broad similarity would have to be the use of not scientifically explainable spiritual forces to reach a
certain objective.
The latter also draws Reiki into the Biblical definition of the occult.
Reiki is also defined as an emerging adjunctive therapy that claims to provide physical and psychological
healing as well as an experience of spiritual connection. 18
It is increasingly employed in counselling centres, hospitals, and even churches. Reiki is believed by many to be
a safe, non-invasive healing intervention that draws individuals towards God. 19
It is also said to be:
An occult, new age healing technique developed by Japanese Buddhist monk Mikao Usui Sensei,
based on Sanskrit sutras believed to relate to cosmic symbols used by the Buddha for healing.
Sometimes described as a form of Shinto/Buddhist Qigong [the similarities of Reiki and Qigong are
here 20.
Healing energy is said to be channeled [sic] into a patient's body by laying on of hands...
Practitioners claim the healing energy can also be applied long-distance (e.g. on mailing lists, people
are sometimes asked to "send Reiki" to someone [or some disaster place21].
Buddhist also use the practice to help transcend the ego, and to see "Reality."

Reiki is not a religion, but rather a religious practice. Popularized in the West as a New Age,
alternative healing technique. Reiki practitioners say that Reiki is not taught, but rather
"transferred" by a Reiki Master.22
Reiki is also described as a New Age healing technique based on an ancient Tibetan Buddhist healing system,
rediscovered by Usui - and called Usui Shihi Ryoho - in the 1800s whilst ‘fasting’ on a ‘sacred’ mountain 23.

The ‘...juice of the universe...’

Channeling is the method by which the Reiki practitioner, acting as a medium facilitates the life force also
called Reiki to be conveyed through him/her into the client/patient 24. A Reiki Master describes the process:
Reiki energy appears to descend from above, entering the top of practitioners' heads (the crown
chakra). It then flows through the practitioners' bodies and out through their hands to wherever they
direct it (to specific parts of their bodies or to others). Practitioners feel the energy moving along this
trajectory when giving treatments. All they have to do is intend to channel Reiki for it to begin
flowing.
When treating other people, Reiki practitioners also receive healing because the energy must pass
through them first. Instead of depleting their "ki," treating others actually increases Reiki
practitioners' life-force energy.25
The Reiki technique consists of placing the hands on (or just above) the recipient and then activating the
energy to flow through the practitioner and into the recipient. One practitioner describes the experience in the
following way:
When doing it, I become a channel through which this force, this juice of the universe, comes pouring
from my palms into the body of the person I am touching, sometimes lightly, almost imperceptibly,
sometimes in famished sucking drafts. I get it even as I'm giving it. It surrounds the two of us, patient
and practitioner.26
When asked what this juice of the universe is, the Reiki Master replied:
A Reiki attunement is an initiation into a sacred metaphysical order [also see 27 and 28] that has been
present on earth for thousands of years ... By becoming part of this group, you will also be receiving
help from the Reiki guides and other spiritual beings who are also working toward these goals.29
The above mentioned attunement is the opening up of the prior mentioned channels:
The Reiki attunement process is how one becomes a channel for Reiki. Attunements can be given
only by a Reiki master...In this ceremony the Reiki Master shares the Reiki attunement symbols and
Reiki energy that were passed on from their teacher. This ceremony creates an energy pattern around
the recipient of the attunement which entrains (or attunes) their energy field to the energies
represented by the symbols. The attunement is permanent, thus making the recipient a Reiki
practitioner. Symbols are placed in to the Crown and Palm Chakras. This starts a cleansing and
balancing reaction as the symbols clear blockages in the Chakras.... 30

When Lucy eventually crossed over [died], I decided to send her Reiki, to express my gratitude for what
she had taught me. In my healing sanctuary I lit a candle and burned some incense in her honour. I
settled back in my chair and drew the Reiki symbols on my hands and in the air before me. I held a
picture of Lucy in my mind and asked permission to connect with her in the spirit world 31... I would
like to thank the Higher Power called REIKI for being my constant companion on this journey and
allowing me to enrich the lives of both humans and animals in such a meaningful way.32
The following quote from a South African Reiki practitioner regarding assisting a person in dying is very self-
explanatory:
There are times when a soul becomes stuck between Heaven and Earth unable or unwilling to fully
cross over from the earth plane of existence. Most often it is due to confusion at the time of death
because it was so sudden and traumatic. At others it is because the person is so determined to stay
and accomplish a goal such as watching over a loved one not knowing that they may be more
effective at this once they have crossed over. Some fear punishment in the afterlife whether they

Spiritual Guidance Comes from God Alone
The Bible teaches that spiritual guidance should be sought in God alone through Jesus Christ and his Holy Spirit.
He has provided everything we need for this life in his Word.

When men tell you to consult mediums and spiritists, who whisper and mutter, should not a people
inquire of their God? Why consult the dead on behalf of the living? (NIV)

That is why we have a great High Priest who has gone to heaven, Jesus the Son of God. Let us cling to

actually deserve as much as they fear or not due to religious instruction during life. Finally sometimes
it is because a soul is very harmful and those cases should be left to only the most skilled afterlife
healers or better yet, imo, beings like Archangel Michael who when asked will gently but firmly wisk
such beings away to a place where they cant cause harm and hopefully may be brought back to the
light.Always make sure that anyone you wish to assist is of the light so as to ensure you do not bite off
more than you can chew. While one can always call in Archangel Michael to save the day I feel it
better to ask him to take care of things beyond my ability so he doesnt have to save me on top of it all.
Or in other words dont make ones guardian angel work overtime unnecessarily okay ;) So far the
easiest technique of assisting someone to cross over is once I have prepared myself (grounded,
shielded, invited guides to help and support) is to ask that persons Higher Self and Guides to gather
around him or her to assist. Then I ask the Higher Self [unknown, unnamed] if I may send Reiki to it
to pass along to the person as they are willing and able to accept it. Reiki is sent to the High Self so
the person is not frightened by a stranger beaming energy at them in their confused state. Also it
reduces the risk that one may get caught up in the persons turmoil. As an Empath 33 I have found the
hard way it is best to take precautions like this so I may safely offer help and healing. I have felt people

Yes, I believe they can be very real experiences, but not of truly talking with dead people. The Bible considers
these experiences to be associated with deceiving spirits, demonic forces, angels of light or counterfeits for the
true Spirit of God.

It follows that Reiki makes no distinction between the living and the dead or whether the object is human or
not. Necromancers36 and Reiki practitioners often use the same techniques37 although consulting the dead
does not seem to be on the agenda for level 1 and 2 Reiki practitioners.
Reiki dabbles intensely with spiritualism, indeed, it relies totally on it what guarantee does the client have
that his/her body will not become the new abode (home) of a deceased spirit maybe even of an animal

At this stage it has to be underlined again that the occult, of which Reiki is but one tenet, is real and not just

Reiki as an offensive reality

Although it is not made public, Reiki can also be used to cast spells with the use of inter alia the Evil Eye
Technique40 Reiki is said to be able to ward off negative influences; nothing prevents a practitioner, or a
group of them from using it negatively even from a distance! In fact, distance is no problem for Reiki.41

This is a quote from the official web site of the Reiki Masters Association of South Africa made by Reiki
Master Carol Mulrooney.
Carol further relates how she treats animals:
...I connect with the animal before they arrive for the treatment using the Reiki symbols. I introduce
myself and ask if he [in this case a dog] wishes to be healed...Focusing on the painful or injured areas,
I remove energy blocks, and use my third eye [see note 44] to act as a laser beam. I stare at the spot
visualizing blue light radiating from my third eye... 45
During this, and other healing operations, the Reiki practitioner is advised to ask other Reiki Guides to help
these guides seem to be in the spiritual realm.

In an attempt to thwart responsibilities Reiki states it is not a religion.

A Reiki (Grand) Master, Hawayo Takata (1900-1980) (she charged about R800,000 per person for Reiki Master
tuition!) who brought Reiki to the West, said:
I believe there exists One Supreme Being the Absolute Infinite A dynamic Force that governs the
world and universe. It is an unseen spiritual power that vibrates and all other powers fade into
insignificance beside it. So, therefore, it is Absolute!....I shall call it Reiki.. [this highly developed being

Some much for the argument that it is NOT a religion, but only a neutral healing technique.

The above is endorsed by former mentioned Beverley Marsden in her suggestions on making contact with
angels:

the third eye chakra... Say this prayer, aloud or to yourself: Almighty and loving father, hear my
prayer. I ask for permission to call upon thy servants of the light, the four archangels Raphael, Gabriel,
Michael and Uriel, that I might be blessed with those aspects of thy Divine presence, which they
represent for the purpose of healing, protection and guidance... Take your time to commune with the
archangels. Ask of them what you will, and receive any gifts they may give you with grace and

My god is stronger than your god...

Obviously, the Reiki movement is not as holistic as it would like you to believe. A rift resulted in the two main
bodies crystallizing in SA - the Karuna53 branch and the Usui branch. The prior have this to say:
Karuna Reiki opens you to work more closely with all enlightened beings, including those who are
physically present and those who are in spirit. Most students find this system more powerful than Usui
Reiki! [my god is stronger that your god...].

The ethics...

The ethical code signed by all Reiki practitioners in SA contains more or less the following:
7. To undertake to inform, explain and confirm this process with my client, thus ensuring full client
participation and choice throughout the consultations; 54
The question does arise how much of the true facts regarding the spiritual/occultist essence behind the
process of Reiki is explained to the client?
If Reiki promotes healing and is an increasingly promoted alternative also sought by the odd registered nurse
in South Africa55 why not just allow it?
If Reiki is so good, why would Dr McClenton state :
... research demonstrates that Reiki therapy, over time, can cause physical, emotional, and spiritual
harm. 56
And why would the Catholic Church deem it necessary to pronounce:
...Reiki therapy finds no support either in the findings of natural science or in Christian belief...
...To use Reiki one would have to accept at least in an implicit way central elements of the worldview
that undergirds Reiki theory, elements that belong neither to Christian faith nor to natural science.
...a Catholic who puts his or her trust in Reiki would be operating in the realm of superstition, the
no-man's-land that is neither faith nor science. Superstition corrupts one's worship of God by turning
one's religious feeling and practice in a false direction.
...it would be inappropriate for Catholic institutions, such as Catholic health care facilities and retreat
centers, or persons representing the Church, such as Catholic chaplains, to promote or to provide
support for Reiki therapy.
Some forms of Reiki teach of a need to appeal for the assistance of angelic beings or Reiki spirit
guides. This introduces the further danger of exposure to malevolent forces or powers. 57

If Reiki is, as it claims, of scientific proven value, where are the authoritative scientific peer reviews?

Conclusion

It is beyond doubt that the use of Reiki is un-Christian, un-ethical and misleading.
It is to be condemned for its ostensibly bona fide methods of trying to slip into establishments under
the guise of being an alternative health treatment where the less weary and defenceless can be
exploited for Reiki’s long term monetary and membership drives.
There is absolute NO scientific proof that Reiki contributes to the general wellbeing of a person NOR
that it alleviates pain beyond that which is obtainable by known, sound and accepted medical
practice.
For a child of God, Reiki and its associative concepts and practices are clearly abhorred by God as
seditious and intent on the usurping His power and knowledge for self. It is nothing more than a
continuation of Satan’s ploy from the Garden of Eden and his persistent undermining of the
authority of Jesus Christ who is all sufficient.

God calls it harlotry it is adultery against God - those who participate in it, and those allowing it 58
will face the wrath of God – be they the pope, bishops, pastors, priests, mothers or fathers
The Christian answer to the occult is faith in Jesus Christ not the Christ of New Age, but the Son of
God - as He is the way, the truth and the life no one will come to God the Father except through
Him.

If you believe that Reiki is in some way a humane and morally correct system of conduct, remember
that morality might keep you out of jail, but it wont keep you out of Hell don’t take my word for it,
God says:

"He who believes in the Son has eternal life; but he who does not obey the Son
will not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him." (John 3:36 NASB)
