VENTILATION

INTRODUCTION
The electronic compartment ventilation system supplies sufficient
ventilation to the forward and rear electronic compartments to prevent
overtemperatures during the aircraft operation on the ground or in
flight.

Avionics Protective Shield (Post-Mod. S.B. 145-21-0036).

Thermal insulation.
The figures ELECTRONIC COMPARTMENT VENTILATION - MAIN
COMPONENT LOCATIONS show the location of the main
components of the system.

DESCRIPTION
The electronic compartment ventilation system has two subsystems:
Rear electronic compartment cooling system.
Forward electronic compartment cooling system.
The rear electronic compartment cooling system uses air from the
gasper system on the ground. In flight (or in operation with the aircraft
pressurized), the air conditioning discharge air passes through the
compartment, cooling it.
The forward electronic compartment cooling system uses ventilation
and exhaustion at the same time. This system has:
Two NACA air inlets.
Two shutoff valves.
Two recirculation fans.
Two exhaust fans.
Four inverter modules.
Four temperature control switches.
Two overtemperature switches.
Two check valves.
Two water separators.

COMPONENTS

CHECK VALVE

SHUTOFF VALVE

The check valve prevents reverse flow and water ingestion into the
compartment when the related exhaust fan is off.

The shutoff valves are installed downstream the NACA air intakes.
These valves are of the butterfly type. They are made of aluminum
and have a 3-in diameter each. The shutoff valves are electrically
controlled by a motor actuator.

This valve has a single flapper which turns on a hinge around a shaft
through the valve body, at right angle to the flow direction. The flapper
is spring-loaded to close.

RECIRCULATION AND EXHAUST FANS

The two recirculation fans and the two exhaust fans use AC motors of
the brushless type. Thus, it prevents the need for replacement of
brushes. The two recirculation fans are installed in the forward part of
the compartment. The two exhaust fans are installed in the aft part of
the compartment.
INVERTER

The inverter is an electrically commuted direct circuit equipment with

commutation performed by hall-effect transistors. The output is a
square wave pulse (on-off pulse at 90o intervals in each revolution of
the fan motor).
TEMPERATURE CONTROL SWITCH

The temperature control switches are hermetically sealed single-pole,

single-throw devices that control the exhaust fan and the shutoff valve
operation.

WATER SEPARATOR

The water separator is made of fiberglass. It is of the inertial type,

integrated with the NACA air inlet.
The separated water is drained overboard.
AVIONICS PROTECTIVE SHIELD

Instances of water-condensation inside the forward electronic

compartment, due to the different ambient temperatures to which the
aircraft is exposed during flights. In order to mitigate the
consequences of such occurrences on the avionics installed in both
sides of the forward electronic compartment, a shield assembly is
being presented for their protection.
The figures FORWARD ELECTRONIC COMPARTMENT VENTILATION - COMPONENT INSTALLATION DETAILS show details of the
system components.

OVERTEMPERATURE SWITCH

The overtemperature switches are hermetically sealed single-pole,

single-throw devices that send signals to the EICAS for the indication
of electronic compartment overtemperature.

OPERATION
REAR ELECTRONIC COMPARTMENT

DC Bus 1 supplies recirculation fan 2 and exhaust fan 1. DC Bus 2

supplies recirculation fan 1 and exhaust fan 2. Each fan has a related
inverter for power supply.

In flight, the air conditioning discharge air passes through the rear
electronic compartment and goes out through the outflow valves,
cooling the compartment.

When the temperature in the compartment is more than 24oC (75oF),

the temperature control switches send a ground signal to the elek bay
cooling relay. This will turn on the related exhaust fan and open the
related shutoff valve. This supplies fresh air flow to the compartment.
If the aircraft is in flight the NACA ram-air flow increases the exhaust
airflow.

One derivation from the gasper system ducts the air through a beam
behind the baggage compartment rear partition to the hot points in
the compartment.

When the temperature in the compartment is less than 19oC (66oF),

the elek bay cooling relay deenergizes. This will turn the exhaust fan
off and close the shutoff valve.

The upper portion of the compartment is insulated to prevent water

dropping on the equipment.

When the temperature in the compartment is more than 71oC (160oF),

the EICAS will show a caution message ELEKBAY OVTEMP. One
of the two overtemperature switches sending a ground signal to DAU
1 is sufficient to send this message to the EICAS display.

During ground operation, the gasper fan supplies airflow to the rear
electronic compartment.

The lower portion is non-insulated to permit heat transfer in hot days

with doors open.
To prevent overtemperature during ground operation, the gasper fan
is always on independently from its control switch in the cockpit (Ref.
21-23).
Overtemperature indication is shown on the CMC messages when
the electronic equipment send this signal.
FORWARD ELECTRONIC COMPARTMENT

NOTE: The operation of the left or right side is the same. Only the
identification of circuit breakers, relays, DC Buses and other
electrical equipment will change.

The microswitches in the shutoff valves send signals to the CMC. The
CMC will show on the MFD the message ELEKBAY VLV 1(2) FAIL
if the valve position is different from its command.
The compartment is thermally insulated to isolate the internal
temperature from the ambient temperature changes.
The figure FORWARD ELECTRONIC COMPARTMENT COOLING 1
- ELECTRICAL DIAGRAM shows the operation of the system.
The figure FORWARD ELECTRONIC COMPARTMENT COOLING 2
- ELECTRICAL DIAGRAM shows the operation of the system.

As long as the aircraft electrical system is energized, the recirculation

fans stay ON. This makes sure the temperature in the compartment
stays stable.
