2. GLOBAL TRADE - KEY FINDINGS

The U.S., in spite of some rather pedestrian 2014 export numbers, continued to
lead the way in the global green pea trade. In 2014, the U.S. exported 13
thousand tonnes of peas totaling 57 million USD, 7% under the previous year.
Its primary trading partner was Canada, where it supplied 83% of its total
green pea exports in value terms, accounting for 85% of Canadas total
imports.
Overall, the global green pea trade reached 360 million USD, with a CAGR of
11% from 2007 to 2014. In physical terms, it showed steady growth, rising
from 151 thousand tonnes in 2007 to 280 thousand tonnes in 2014.
In 2014, the U.S. (14%), Belgium (13%), the Netherlands (13%), Canada
(12%) and the United Kingdom (12%) were the leading destinations of green
pea imports, together making up 65% of global imports. The share of Belgium
increased (+4 percentage points), while the share of the U.S. illustrated
negative dynamics (-1 percentage point).
The Netherlands and Guatemala were among the other main global suppliers of
green peas in 2014 with a combined share of 30% of global exports. However,
the fastest growing exporters from 2007 to 2014 were Canada (+43% per
year) and the U.S. (+17% per year). The U.S. strengthened its position in the
global export structure, from 11% in 2007 to 16% in 2014.
