T1
3P 1: GIANT PANDA, an ambassador ?

Giant pandas are well-recognized symbols of international wildlife conservation -- in that sense,
they sometimes play a diplomatic role as ambassadors of goodwill between countries. Scientists now
believe that they are part of the bear family. However, there are certain features which differentiate the
pandas with other bears. They have black fur on their ears, around their eyes (eye patches), muzzle,
legs and shoulders. They are also good tree climbers and can swim in order to escape predators.
Pandas have an enlarged wrist bone that looks like a thumb to grasp objects like bamboo.
Pandas eat bamboo. Since giant pandas have the digestive system of a carnivore, they do not
have the ability to digest cellulose (plant matter) efficiently. Therefore, they can derive very little energy
and protein from the consumption of bamboo. Hence, the average giant panda has to eat as much as
20 to 45 lbs (9-20 kg) of bamboo shoots a day to be sufficiently active. On occasion, giant pandas are
also known to eat flowers, vines, tufted grasses, green corn, honey and rodents.
A 2007 report shows 239 pandas living in captivity inside China and another 27 outside the country.
Some reports also show that the number of pandas in the wild is on the rise.
Historically pandas lived in both mountainous and lowland regions of central-western and
south-western China. They are now found only in the mountains of central China, in Sichuan,
Shaanxi and Gansu provinces.
Giant pandas are found mostly in thick bamboo and coniferous forests (evergreens with seed
cones) at 8,500 to 11,500 feet in elevation. They are generally solitary animals that spend most of their
days feeding. However, they do communicate with each other once in a while through scent markings,
calls and occasional meetings.
Unlike other bears, giant pandas do not hibernate. In the winter, they move to lower elevations to keep
warm, while travelling to higher elevations in the summer to stay cool. They can be active at any time of
the day or night. Pandas do not have permanent homes but sleep at the bottom of trees under stumps
and rock ledges.
Pandas have evolved special features to help them eat their favourite food: strong jaws, large molars,

and a "thumb" that helps them hold the bamboo.

Cubs are born blind and helpless and if there are twins, only one cub survives. The cub's eyes open at
six to eight weeks and it starts to move around at three months. Weaned at six months, the cub becomes
independent after a year. They may, however, stay with their mothers for up to three years before they
strike out on their own.

3P 2: PASS IT ON
ONE day, a man on his way to town, saw an old lady stranded by the
road. The luxury car she had been driving had a puncture in the wheel.
He stopped and offered to help. The old lady looked nervous. The
man looked poor, tired, and shabby. Furthermore, he drove an old, beat5

up car that had seen better days. Seeing how worried she looked, the
man said to her, Do not worry. I am here to help you. My name is John
Locke.
As he changed the wheel of her car, he dirtied his hands, shirt and
pants because he had to carry a heavy tyre and kneel on the road. After
he had done the job, the grateful lady asked him how much she owed

10

him. John Locke just smiled and refused to accept any money. He said,
If you really want to pay me back, the next time you see someone who
needs help, give that person the help he needs and think of me.
The lady got into her car and got on her way. Shortly, she arrived
at a little town. She saw a small caf. She decided to have a cup of

15

coffee. It had been a long, tiring day.

As she sipped her coffee, the old lady watched the waitress, Anna
who had taken her order. Anna was pregnant and almost due. Anna was
sitting in a corner, massaging her sore feet. She was so friendly and
13

kind as she took my order, despite being on her feet the whole day,
20

thought the old lady. How does someone with so little, be so kind?
Then, she remembered John Locke.
She asked for her bill and paid with a hundred dollar note. When
Anna returned with the change, the old lady was gone. On a piece of
paper towel was a note. It read: You do not owe me anything. Someone

25

helped me once and now I am returning the favour. Continue this act of
kindness and shower it on someone who needs it. Do not let it end with
you.
When Anna lifted the paper towel, she found four one hundred
dollar bills.
Anna went home late but happy that night. She could not wait to

30

tell her husband about the good fortune that she encountered that
evening. She wondered how the old lady knew that she and her
husband needed the extra money badly, especially with the baby coming
so soon.
She knew her husband had been worried. But now, everything was

35

going to be fine. She looked at her sleeping husband. She whispered,

Everything will be all right. I love you, John Locke.

particular text feature.
Code 2
Relate the last sentence to central relationships and events in the
story. Answer may refer to, for example, the relationship among the
three characters; or the effect of good deeds; or gratitude.
The ending is appropriate - as the story has brought the old
lady into contact with kind-hearted John Locke who helped
her, and in return, the old lady unknowingly has helped his
wife the pregnant waitress.
Yes, the ending is appropriate- as kindness/ good deeds/
gratitude (any similar meaning which is related to the text)
needs to be passed on, and that is the theme of the story.
It is appropriate because John Locke is sincere in helping
people and his good deeds are returned through anothers act
of kindness.
What you give, you always get back (positive feedback). Since
John Locke is a good man, everything will be good for him.
Do unto others as you want others to do unto you and all will
be alright in the world.

3P 3 : LICORICE POWER

Licorice Power

ne of the worlds oldest known medicines, the root of the licorice

plant (above) has been prescribed since antiquity. Historians
such as Pliny the Elder describe its use in treating colds and
asthma and healing wounds. Herbalists in China and India add licorice to
their compounds, and its in over-the-counter remedies for sore throats.
Now scientists worldwide are testing its potential. One team found that
glycyrrhizic acid, a compound in licorice kills cells infected with the virus
that causes Kaposis sarcoma, a cancer. It also inhibits the growth of
SARS virus and has been tested with success against Japanese
encephalitis, chronic hepatitis and HIV. A.R. Williams

3P 4 : PILLOW TALK
Sleep position gives personality clue
If you want an insight into somebody's true personality, then try to catch a
glimpse of the way they sleep. Scientists believe the position in which a person
goes to sleep provides an important clue about the kind of person they are.
Professor Chris Idzikowski, director of the Sleep Assessment and Advisory
Service, has analysed six common sleeping positions - and found that each is
linked to a particular personality type. "We are all aware of our body language
when we are awake but this is the first time we have been able to see what our
subconscious posture says about us. "What's interesting is that the profile behind
the posture is often very different from what we would expect. This is especially
seen in the sleeping postures between adults and teenagers. Teenagers are
going through a phase where their personalities change as they mature"
The Foetus: Those who curl up in the foetus position are described as tough on
the outside but sensitive at heart. They may be shy when they first meet
somebody, but soon relax. This is the most common sleeping position, adopted
by 33% of the 1,000 people who took part in the survey. More than twice as
many women as men tend to adopt this position.
Log (27%): Lying on your side with both arms down by your side. These sleepers
are easy going, social people who like being part of the in-crowd and are trusting
of strangers. However, they may be gullible.
The yearner (13%): People who sleep on their side with both arms out in front
are said to have an open nature, but can be suspicious and cynical. They are
slow to make up their minds, but once they have taken a decision, they are
unlikely ever to change it.
Soldier (8%): Lying on your back with both arms pinned to your sides. People
who sleep in this position are generally quiet and reserved. They do not like a
fuss but set high standards for themselves and others .
Free-fall (10%): Lying on your front with your hands around the pillow, and your
head turned to one side. Often gregarious and brash people, but can be nervy
and thin-skinned underneath, and do not like criticism, or extreme situations.

28

Starfish (9%): Lying on your back with both arms up around the pillow. These
sleepers make good friends because they are always ready to listen to others,
and offer help when needed. They generally do not like to be the centre of
attention. This is not a popular position among teenagers.
Health effect
Professor Idzikowski also examined the effect of various sleeping positions on
health. He concluded that the freefall position was good for digestion, while the
starfish and soldier positions were more likely to lead to snoring and a bad
night's sleep.
Professor Idzikowski said: "Lying down flat means that stomach contents can
more readily be worked back up into the mouth, while those who lie on their back
may end up snoring and breathing less well during the night. "Both these
postures may not necessarily awaken the sleeper but could cause a less
refreshing night's sleep." The researcher also found that when compared to
teenagers, most adults are unlikely to change their sleeping position.

T6
3P 6 : THE WOODEN BOWL

A frail old man went to live with his son, daughter-in-law, and a four-year old grandson.
The old mans hands trembled, his eyesight was blurred, and his step faltered. The family
ate together nightly at the dinner table. But the elderly grandfathers shaky hands and
failing sight made eating rather difficult. Peas rolled off his spoon onto the floor. When he
grasped the glass often milk spilled on the tablecloth. The son and daughter-in-law
became irritated with the mess. We must do something about grandfather, said the son.
Ive had enough of his spilled milk, noisy eating, and food on the floor. So the husband
and wife set a small table in the corner. There, grandfather ate alone while the rest of the
family enjoyed dinner at the dinner table. Since grandfather had broken a dish or two, his
food was served in a wooden bowl. Sometimes when the family glanced in grandfathers
direction, he had a tear in his eye as he ate alone. Still, the only words the couple had for
him were sharp admonitions when he dropped a fork or spilled food. The four-year-old
watched it all in silence.
One evening before supper, the father noticed his son playing with wood scraps on the
floor. He asked the child sweetly, What are you making? Just as sweetly, the boy
responded, Oh, I am making a little bowl for you and mama to eat your food from when I
grow up. The four-year-old smiled and went back to work. The words so struck the
parents that they were speechless. Then tears started to stream down their cheeks.
Though no word was spoken, both knew what must be done. That evening the husband
took the grandfathers hand and gently led him back to the family table.
For the remainder of his days he ate every meal with the family. And for some reason,
neither the husband nor wife seemed to care any longer when a fork was dropped, milk
spilled, or the tablecloth soiled.

to pull off. Take the self-chilling drink can, the Chill

Though precise details of the technology haven't been

contains a chamber of highly pressurised C02 gas which
absorbs the heat surrounding the beverage.

T8
3P 8 : WHO IS

THE BOSS?

56

f Americans were taking a new job and had their choice of a boss, they would
prefer a male boss over a female boss by 35% to 23%, although four in 10 would
have no preference. These attitudes have not changed much in recent years, but
when Gallup first asked this question in 1953, 66% of Americans preferred a male
boss, while just 5% preferred working for a woman.

The most recent data are from Gallup's annual Work and Education survey,
conducted on Aug. 7-11, 2013. Gallup asked this question of all Americans,
regardless of their employment status or work history; the responses of working
Americans and those who are unemployed were similar in the most recent survey.
The proportion of Americans who prefer a female boss has increased by 18
percentage points over the past six decades, while there has been a 31-point decline
in the percentage of who would prefer a male boss. Americans are also significantly
more likely today than in 1953 to volunteer that they do not have a preference.
The 23% of Americans who would opt to work for a woman is the highest in the
history of Gallup's asking this question since 1953.
57

Preference for Female Boss Higher Among Those Who Currently Work for a
Woman
Fewer Americans today say that they work for a female boss than a male boss, and
this structural aspect of the workplace in turn likely affects their preferences.
Among working Americans, 54% say they currently work for a man, while 30% work
for a woman. Those who currently work for a woman are as likely to prefer having a
female boss as a male one. This is one of the few subgroups of the population that
does not tilt in the "male boss" direction. Those who currently work for a man prefer a
male boss, by 35% to 17%.
It is difficult to establish direction of the relationship between the gender of one's
current boss and one's preference for the gender of a boss; it is possible that
workers who initially prefer a female boss are more likely to end up in circumstances
in which they have a female boss. It is also possible that the experience of working
for a female boss affects workers' preferences. If the latter is the case, and if the
proportion of U.S. workers who have female bosses increases in the future, the
current preference for a male boss in the overall population could dissipate.
Other key differences in preferences for male or female bosses across subgroups
include the following:

Both men and women prefer a male boss. More than half of the men say the
gender of their boss makes no difference, but those who have a preference favour
a male boss by an 11-point margin. Women are more likely than men to have a
preference, with higher proportions expressing preferences for each gender of
boss, though women choose a male over a female boss by a 13-point margin.

There are some differences by age, with Americans between 35 and 54 the
least likely to prefer a male boss. Younger Americans are generally not more likely
than average, or less likely, to prefer a male boss.

Political partisanship significantly predicts attitudes toward the gender of one's

boss, with Democrats essentially breaking even in their preferences, while
independents and Republicans prefer a male boss.

Americans of all education levels prefer a male boss, by margins ranging from
seven to 14 percentage points.

3P 9 : TUNKU

Tunku
Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj and his many achievements as Prime
Minister, and later as elder statesman, has been the subject of endless prose but
little is known about his family and private life. I remember when one reporter wanted
to interview Tunku about his family; his reply was an indulgent Buat apaaa? (What
for), in his pronounced Kedah accent. Like most Asian public figures, he preferred to
keep his personal life private.
From a young age, I realized, he was no ordinary grandfather who could be
contented whiling his days away pottering about the house, relaxing and enjoying his
retirement. Of course, we never really had him to ourselves. He belonged to the
nation and even after he died, his personal possessions and art collections had to go
to the National Archives.
His home was always full of people. Everyone wanted a piece of him and he
gave of himself freely to the chagrin of the family. Even at the end of his life, we had
to share him with others. On his deathbed in the Intensive Care Unit of the then
Kuala Lumpur General Hospital, there was a large crowd of friends and relatives by
his bedside.
The doctors had said only the immediate family members could be allowed in
but even they couldn't prevent the concerned crowd from surging in. My family had to
literally jostle our way to his bedside.
It's always been said among the family that he may be Bapa Malaysia (Father
of Malaysia) but he was never a bapa to his family. For him, his country came first,
his family second and we all had to accept that. He sacrificed a lot for his country at
the cost of a personal life.
He was undoubtedly the grand patriarch of the family, a strong influence in our
lives. Whatever we did, we would refer to him first. It was he who held the family
together. Growing up with the Tunku as our grandfather, we always had to keep in
mind that we must not tarnish his good name.
65

His enduring wish was for the family to remain together. I remember him
telling me of a time when his mother, Mak Che Menjelara, had only one apple to
share between her seven children; she cut it into seven equal pieces. He wanted to
demonstrate that the bond between his brothers and sisters was that strong.
My favourite time was dinner-time. All the guests would have left and only the
immediate family would be around. The traditional meal served was my favourite roast beef and Yorkshire pudding based on the Tunku's own recipe. Sounds rather
incongruous to have it on Hari Raya but it was served by popular demand.
I always observed how attentive he was to the family during these times,
especially to his great-grandchildren. He spoke proudly of having four generations in
the room and how he was fortunate to be alive to see his great-grandchildren
considering he was already in his 30s when he had his children.
Tunku's generosity was as much material as it was in spirit. He was always
willing to help anyone in need but he would never do anything against his principles.
He drew the line when it came to using his influence for material gain and he
was proud that he never abused his position. He would repeatedly tell us that when
he died it would be with "hati suci'', a clear conscience. You only had to look at his
houses to see that he never lived a lavish lifestyle.
He never amassed great wealth during his premiership. What little he had was
inherited from his mother, a shrewd Thai businesswoman. It has also been welldocumented that whatever property he had was sold to raise funds for UMNO and
other such purposes.
I am proud of his indomitable spirit, humility and courage to fight for what he
believed in, though sometimes his was the only voice. Todays generation would fare
better if they were brought up in an orthodox family with traditional family values.
His legacy to our family and, indeed, to our nation, is his strong sense of fair
play, integrity, tolerance, and compassion. Long may he live in our hearts.
Notes: Malaysia's first Prime Minister, Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj, remained a private man throughout
his very public career. In this special Millennium Markers article, the Tunku's granddaughter, SHARIFAH INTAN,
shares the private side of her 'Tok'.

he film is as good as any Disney animated

feature ever made - as magical as Snow White
and The Little Mermaid. Its a reminder that
animation is the ideal medium for fantasy. Like all
Disney animated films, Beauty and the Beast has
some wonderful musical numbers in the movie and
animation sets. This film reflects a new energy and
creativity from the Disney animation people. They
seem to have abandoned all notions that their featurelength cartoons are intended only for younger viewers.
Perhaps it is inevitable, in an age when even younger
kids see high-voltage special effects films like Die
Hard or Terminator 2. Animation could no longer be
content with jolly and innocuous fairy tales.

T
his is a hyperkinetic 3-D action comedy, with the
characters forever racing on Santa's sleigh, hurtling
down chutes and zooming through tunnels. There's also
a villain, called Pitch who is determined to put the
Guardians out of business. In this moment of crisis, the
team calls on Jack Frost to lead their resistance, and in
the process, he redeems himself, becomes visible and
achieves a personal victory. Now we know what he
looks like. I was reminded of Peter Pan, although he
isn't green. There's an audience for this film. It's not me.
I gather younger children will like the breakneck action,
the magical ability to fly and the young hero who has
tired of only being a name. Let it be said that
director Peter Ramsey and his art team have created a
crisp, colorful fantasy world, sharper-edged than many
feature-length children's cartoons.

ow long has it been since you saw a movie that

succeeds as pure story? That doesn't depend
on stars, effects or genres, but simply
fascinates you with how it will turn out? Marc Forster's
"The Kite Runner," based on a much-loved novel, is a
movie like that. It superimposes human faces and a
historical context on the tragic images of war from
Afghanistan. This film sidesteps the emotional
disconnects we often feel when a story moves between
past and present. The film works so deeply on us
because the performances by the actors playing Amir
and Hassan as children are natural, convincing and
powerful; recently I have seen several such child
performances that adults would envy for their
conviction and strength. Ahmad Khan Mahmoodzada,
as young Hassan, is particularly striking, with his
serious, sometimes almost mournful face. One of the
areas in which the movie succeeds is in its depiction of
kite flying. Yes, it uses special effects, but they function
to represent what freedom and exhilaration the kites
represent to their owners. Yet there is a fundamental
difference between the kite flyer (Amir) and the kite
runner (Hassan). Perhaps that sad wisdom in Hassan's eyes comes from his certainty that
all must fall to earth, sooner or later.
http://www.rogerebert.com/reviews/the-kite-runner-2007

iddharth uses this story to comment on the

state of abducted and runaway children in
India. Director and co-writer Richie Mehta
focuses on the parental and societal response to
Siddharths disappearance. Mahendra, the father
sets out on an exhausting journey to find his son, and
each person he encounters, from the police, to child
services, to the factory manager who hired
Siddharth, reacts in a nonchalant manner. Its as if
the disappearance of a child has become so
commonplace that it has lost its shock value and
outrage. A sense of hopelessness invades every
frame of Siddharth,. It explores how the Saini family
dynamic is affected after their son disappears. The
film follows Mahendra on every lead he has while
trying to find his son and Mehta uses these trips to
provide information and social commentary. I wish
the films tone were angrier while delivering its
message, The last few minutes of Siddharth find
Mahendra asking stinging yet pertinent questions
before the sad truth of Maybe Siddharth got lucky
and left this world. Siddharth leaves it up to the
viewer to decide whether this lucky notion is a
comfort or a tragedy.73
