application.
ByreadingtheINZguidetoNZSMCresidency
applicationguide(INZ1105),INZcheckwhetherthe
applicanthasabilitytosettleandcontributetoNew
Zealand.IfanapplicanthasjobofferORhasdone2
yearsofmasters/doctoratedegreestudyinNZwillbe
consideredasdemonstratedthisability.Likewise,if
personhasnoneoftheseapplicable,hemaybe
grantedresidenceORmaybedeferreddependingupon
theapplicant'ssituationandability.
Now,comingtomyspecificdoubtstotheoutcomeof
SMCvisa:
1.Whenapersonhasdemonstratedtheabilityto
settleandcontributetoNZ(byjobofferOR2year
studyrequirement),doestheoutcomeofSMCresults
inResidentvisaORPermanentResidentVisa.Ihave
seenthreadswherepeoplehaveclaimedthattheygot

andifyoudon'thaveajoboffer,thentheCOwillcallyoutoarrangeaninterviewwithyou.Itishowthe
COisimpressedbyyouranswersintheinterviewthatmakehim/herdecidewhatvisayououghttobe
offered.TheinterviewisdesignedtofindoutwhatyouknowabouthowthingsworkinNZ,bothinyour
careerandinsocietyingeneral,toseeifyouwouldbelikelytoimpressanemployerandbequickly
offeredajob,andalsothatyouarepreparedtomanageyourlifeefficiently,likesortingouthousing,
medicalcare,schoolforchildrenifany,etc.,withoutbeingdistractedbythosethingsfromyourwork
thisisallknownas'employability'.

PermanentResidence,whichisatotallydifferentvisa.Itisgrantedtothosewhohavedemonstrated

ThesevisasandtravelconditionsareNZlaw,andabsolute,allowingfornobendinginthefaceofan
individual'sdifficulties.Soyoucan't'tackle'situationslikethat,inawaythatallowsforstickingtoyour
personalplans.YoueitherhavetothinkaheadsoyouhaveyourPR,orvariationoftravelconditionsif
eligible,inplacealready,orelseyouwillbestuckoutsideNZ,withoutpermissiontoreenter,havingto
gothroughtheformalitiesofapplyingforPRorvariationoftravelconditionsthroughaforeignINZoffice.
Ifyoudon'tqualifyforeitherone,youcan'tcomebackin.Inthosecircumstances,yourResidencewould
lapse,becauseyoucouldn'tgetbacktouseit.Youwouldhavetostartagainfromtheverybeginning,
applyingunderSMCandgoingthroughthewholethingofprovidingevidenceetc.,asifyourprevious
applicationhadneverhappened.
