Physics Revision 1 Lesson Plan

Class: Year 10 Standard Science

Date: 17.06.15

Time: 11.00-11.55 pm

Lesson Topic: Review of Forces & Energy

Main Science Idea
Kinetic & potential energy, Conservation of Energy, Inertia & Newtons 1st Law
Australian Curriculum Links
ACSSU190 & 229:
Energy conservation in a system can be explained by describing energy transfers and transformation.
The motion of objects can be described and predicted using the laws of physics
Lesson Outcomes/Objectives
By the end of this lesson students will be able to

Make predictions based on the relationship between kinetic and potential energy
Use the Conservation of Energy to calculate kinetic/potential energy
Describe inertia and Newtons 1st law in a real-life example
Students' Prior Knowledge

Students have previously studied all the content in the revision lesson
Preparation

Materials, resources, presentation aids etc.:

Tennis Ball
Physics revision booklets, spares
Kinetic & potential energy practise problems
Videos on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zbU0UJAdFj8 (Top Gear car makeover) &

Method of Achieving Outcomes

11.00-11.05
Introduction

11.05-11.15
Inertia &
Newtons 1st
law
11.15-11.35
Energy
transfers

Students enter, open notes for physics revision

Hook: Top Gear video show video of car which has been renovated. Show from 4:50
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zbU0UJAdFj8
What is happening in this video? Which one of Newtons Laws are we looking at?
Why did everything in the car move around?
Write definition of first law and inertia on whiteboard
Ask students for definitions of kinetic & potential energy
Ask a student to stand at the back of the classroom and through a ball at him (or her):
underarm loopy throw.
Students clap when they think the potential energy of the ball is greatest
Repeat for kinetic energy
Draw kinetic and potential energy rising and falling on whiteboard: relate to
Conservation of Energy. Ask students to interpret based on what they saw with the ball.
Calculation: if I drop the 60g (0.06kg) ball from a height of two metres,
o Calculate the potential energy at the top, half way down, at as it hits the floor.

o What is the kinetic energy right before it hits the floor?

o What is its final velocity?
o Write required formulas on whiteboard.
Go through calculation on whiteboard
11.35-11.50
Students already have revision booklets to work through start physics section
Revision
Incentive for work: if you work well we will watch another Top Gear video at the end of
booklets
class
11.50-11.55
Students pack up
Video reward Play video from 1:00 Jamie Oliver making a salad in a van

Plan for Evaluation
How will you know whether students achieved specific lesson outcomes?
Students can complete 1st law section of revision booklet
Students can answer questions on whiteboard
Students can use inertia to describe what is happening in the videos
Self-Evaluation
