Types of Compressors

What is a compressor?
The compressor has the function of circulating refrigerant inside the
circuit, specifically drawing it in as a gas from the evaporator and then
compressing it and delivering it at higher pressure to the condenser.
Types of Compressors:
Positive Displacement Type
1. Reciprocating compressors - the compressing and displacing element
is a piston having a reciprocating motion within the cylinder.
2. Rotary compressors - Rotary compressors are positive displacement
machines in which the compressing and displacement are affected by
the positive action of rotating elements.
a. Rotary vane compressors consist of a cylindrical casing,
two openings - one suction and one discharge - and a rotor
positioned eccentrically with respect to the casing.
b. Scroll compressors use two scrolls, one fixed and the other
moving and coupled to the motor.
c. Screw compressors are based on a mechanism made up
of two intermeshing screws, called rotors. As the rotors
revolve, the fluid is drawn in through the inlet port, filling the
volume between two lobes.
d. Liquid ring compressors utilize a squirrel cage fan type
impeller which is placed eccentric inside a tube.
Dynamic Type
1. Centrifugal compressors machines in which the rapidly rotating
impeller accelerates the gas.
2. Axial compressors machines in which the gas flow is accelerated in
an axial and peripheral direction by the rotation of specially shaped
blades.
What is an evaporator?
An evaporator is a device used to remove a liquid from a solution, suspension, or
emulsion by boiling off some of the liquid. The liquid is evaporated, or vaporized,
into a gas.

Most common types of evaporators:

a.
b.
c.
d.
e.

Falling Film Evaporators - In falling film evaporators, liquid and

vapors flow downwards in parallel flow.
Rising Film Evaporators - These operate on a "thermo-siphon"
principle.
Forced Circulation Evaporator - Forced circulation evaporators are used if
boiling of the product on the heating surfaces is to be avoided due to the
fouling characteristics of the product, or to avoid crystallization.
Natural Circulation evaporators - In Natural Circulation evaporators, short vertical tubes,
typically 1-2 m long and 50- 100 mm in diameter, are arranged inside the tubes, and the
product is concentrated.
Batch pan Evaporators - is one of the simplest and oldest types of evaporators used in food
industry.

What is a condenser?
is a device or unit used to condense a substance from its gaseous to its liquid state, by cooling.
Types of Condensers
a. Air cooled If the condenser is located on the outside of the unit, the air cooled

condenser can provide the easiest arrangement. These types of condensers eject
heat to the outdoors and are simple to install.
b. Water cooled - Although a little more pricey to install, these condensers are the more
efficient type.
c. Evaporative While these remain the least popular choice, evaporative condensers can be
used inside or outside of a building and under typical conditions, operate at a low
condensing temperature.
