An Assessment on the Campus Lived Experiences of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and

Transgender Youth in Silliman High School, S.Y. 2015-2016

Society is becoming more diverse. New trends are continuously rising in the areas of
food, technology, fashion, business, lifestyle, environment, travel and transportation, culture, and
people. One specific example is the upturn of the LGBT or lesbian, gay, bisexual, and
transgender community. This growing development in the gender group aspect has been a
subjected to many debates and speculations for the past months especially in the Philippines.
With the vast number of Filipino society still strongly upholding to the norms, it has been
difficult for this certain group to make a name for themselves, get involved, and be recognized in
the community. Younger generations as well who seem to belong to this group are having
difficulties. To understand this issue, the researchers seek to find factors and reasons on the
constant struggle for acceptance and identity of LGBT groups starting in high schools. Assessing
the campus lived experiences of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender youths can be an
instrument for the school administration and teachers to identify problems that need to be acted
on and where these may be arising, to lessen various kinds of discrimination, and to assess
school roles in establishing a culture of acceptance in all of its students.

Advancing the evolution of gender identity is a complicated and often tough process.
Most LGBT individuals develop in a community from where they do not know how they came to
be and who strengthened and authenticated their identity; unlike those of minority or ethnic
groups who have already established a foundation from their ancestors. LGBTs instead, arouse in
communities that are either ignorant or hostile toward homosexuality. Belonging to this group is

a transitional process and they are not assured of assistance or have prepared themselves for such
change. That is why their sexual preference is questioned, unwelcomed, and threatened.
Problems arise that may disrupt a persons social, mental, emotional, and physical health such as
discernment, marginalization, substance abuse, suicide, domestic violence, sexual and physical
assault, harassment, hate crimes and denial of family rights and recognition.
Across the globe, individuals suffer inequality for who they adore, what they look, or
who they are. Sexual orientation and gender identity are important parts of ourselves and ought
to never prompt discrimination and mistreatment. Teens, being the most vulnerable group in the
community, are likely to be affected by this turmoil. They are still coming out of their shells,
exploring, searching the world yet at an early stage, are also being robbed of the opportunity to
find ones identity and seek ones self. Just like any other human being, young people who are
going through such transition stage and choosing their sexual preference should not be
condemned. They deserve to be given considerable attention and guidance. Each one of us is
worthy of respect and by all means, we must enjoy our rights fully.
School environment can also be sources of discrimination. Students, peers, and even
teachers are guilty of this act, be it consciously or unconsciously done. LGBT students cannot
escape from this daily dilemma however, the school administration can address this as the
primary models of good character. They themselves must put aside their personal views in order
to establish a safe school environment for these learners. They must not tolerate any forms of
prejudice and must learn to control themselves in doing such. Departments, headed by the
Guidance and Counselling, must work together to promote programs that will instill to students
equal treatment or consequences and school policies shall be imposed against them.
