Message from 2
The NIST time capsule was created and buried as part of a whole School
NISTAA activity ten years ago during the hype of the millennium and Y2K. Organ-
ized by Ms. Jeryl Bain, the participants were NIST students ranging from
Class of 2000-2015.

Capsule Ceremony at NIST since 1999. Mr. Adrian Watts, NIST Deputy Head, opened the
ceremony. Mr. Watts remarked that ―time is a fascinating thing and as
part of the PYP programme studying time and history, it is exciting for the
Year3 students to be looking at how we keep records, and pass on history
Bridges Programme 4-5 from generation to generation‖. Mr. Doug Edwards, Elementary vice Prin-
@NIST ciple – Pastoral, presented a short VDO clip of teachers and students
reminiscing about their memories of 1999 and the time capsule.

The time capsule was opened by six year 13 students who have been at

NIST for the longest. Items such as mobile phones, coins, students‘ work, a
Daniela Pachelt school uniform, newspapers, yearbook, photo stickers, and a VDO tape were
(‘09) revealed. It is sad to note that many items were damaged due to the leak-
age of water inside the time capsule, but many survived intact.

NIST International 7 The Year 3s will re-seal the capsule with new items later this year, to be
opened in another ten year.

Message from NISTAA

Greetings from NISTAA:

Welcome to the February, 2010, issue of NISTAA NEXUS.

Time flies even faster towards the end of the academic year! In This issue, the newsletter features a num-
ber of exciting events that have been happening at NIST over the last few months. After ten years, the time
capsule from the millennium year was finally opened. Unfortunately, most items were soaked in water.
Lesson learned for the next time capsule to be weather proof! Thank you to those alumni who joined us for
the ceremony.

Throughout the academic year, the Bridges programme continues as usual with many interesting guest
speakers from across the fields coming to speak to NIST students including the famous Hollywood actor,
Jackie Chan. It is good news that NIST is getting more and more famous people to visit our campus. If any
one wishes to join any speakers for their talks, please let me know as alumni are always welcome to at-
tend. For the next Bridges' event on Monday, April 5, 2010 at 10am, NIST will welcome Prof. Francoise
Barre-Sinoussi, Director of the Regulations of Retroviral Infections Unit at the Pasteur Institute in Paris. She
was awarded the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 2008 together with Prof. Luc Montagnier for their discovery of
the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Professor Francoise Barre-Sinoussi will give a talk on future chal-
lenges in HIV/AIDS prevention and therapy.

Another exciting event worth sharing is the NIST International Day which took place on Saturday, January
23, 2010, where NIST welcomed over 3,500 visitors to its campus. It was great to see many alumni joining
us at the fair. I hope you all had a great time. On International Day, NISTAA sponsored the oval stage and
Clown Eckie Performance for the kids.

As for NISTAA news, I am please to announce the new Committee Membersfor 2009-2010. The first item
on the Committee‘s agenda is to schedule a meeting regarding NISTAA‘s next investment and to decide if
NISTAA should donate part of its funding back to a school‘s development project specifically the new foot-
ball pitch.

Jackie Chan Speaks to NIST Students

Bangkok – On Monday, November 9, 2009, students from the New Interna-
tional School of Thailand (NIST) heard an inspiring talk by Jackie Chan fol-
lowed by a dialogue session with him. Jackie Chan‘s visit to NIST was part
of the third ASEAN event series "Bridges - Dialogues towards a Culture of
Peace‖.

At NIST, well-known actor, philanthropist, and Goodwill Ambassador Jackie

Chan talked to Year 12 and Year 13 students, as well as drama and art
students from the lower secondary school on the topic ―Art and Culture as
a Pathway towards Peace.‖ His speech gave inspiring messages through
sad, hilarious, and interesting real life stories that he has encountered
during his charity trips to various areas around the world and particularly,
China. Chan highlighted the importance of education and how he regrets
not having the opportunity of a proper education as a child due to his fam-
ily‘s poverty.

Linking his work to peace building, he shared with students

how, in each of his recent movies, he has tried to give hidden
messages to teach values to his audience, especially the
young. Chan encouraged the students to learn how to give
and help others around them. ―When you give back to society,
you sleep well,‖ but it must start from the heart, he said. Last
but not least, Chan repetitively told NIST students to ‗Never
Give Up‘ as that ‗slogan‘ has helped him throughout his life,
no matter the situation he has found himself in. Students
enjoyed the very frank talk with Chan and were able to ask
him questions on both personal and global issues.

Jackie Chan is a Hong Kong actor, action choreographer, film-

maker, producer, martial artist, screenwriter, entrepreneur and
singer. Acting since the 1970s, he has appeared in over 100
films. As a cultural icon, he has been referenced in various pop
songs, cartoons and video games and has received stars on the
Hong Kong Avenue of Stars and the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
He is also a keen philanthropist and a UNICEF Goodwill Ambas-
sador, having worked tirelessly to champion charitable causes.

A TRIBUTE TO DANIELA PACHELT (NIST’ 09)

26 JULY 1990—4 NOVEMBER 2009

@ NIST: 2007-2009

After a very short illness in Germany, Dani passed away on November 4 2009. Her funeral was held on
Wednesday, November 11, 2009 at Northfriedhof Cemetery, Ungererstr. 130, D-80805 Munich, Ger-
many. NIST has planted a memorial tree in memory of Dani Pachelt.

Thank you to Dani‟s friends for sending in photos and messages for this special tribute. Dani will be
forever missed and remembered.
Daniela Pachelt

From Richard Srikureja:

Dani,
I don‟t know why or how you were taken away from us, but for one thing, I know that god needed
another angel and he picked you. You have touched a lot of lives, made hundreds and thousands
of people smile, and your life was devoted to the people you loved. When I think of you, you are an
example of a person lived life to the fullest, a life without regrets, so compassionate and extremely
beautiful. I cannot stress how many times I would turn to you and depend on you when I‟m down or
needed a friend to talk to. You are a beautiful soul, and another day without you is a loss for us. I
will cherish the times we would laugh over immature jokes, talking about our lives and how we
were going to change the world. Your life will live and remain in our hearts forever and I promise as
Roshni, Sarina, Dani long as I am alive you will never be forgotten.
Rest in peace,
Love,
Richard

From Nina Huppertz :

gegangen. Dani, du hattest unbedingt sehr viel Kraft. Ich kannte niemand der so stark war
English class 2009 wie du.
dich denken.

From Olivia Benson:

Roshni & Dani
What is there that I can say about Dani? That
she was a loyal friend, someone that was always
there to listen to your problems and offer advice,
someone who could laugh about the stupidest of
things and make any apparently dull day enter-
taining. It seems cliche to say things like that but
they're all true. It's cruel that not too long after
we said "see you later" with promises of visiting
that we had to say goodbye but you'll never be
forgotten, the memories that we share, the fun
Shinhye & Dani Class of 2009—Pyjamas Day we had together and the good times will stay

NIST INTERNATIONAL DAY 2010

‘SAME SAME BUT DIFFERENT’

This year, NIST celebrated its annual International Day festival, sponsored by La-Z-Boy, on Saturday, January 23, 2010 from 3 pm to 8 pm. There
were over 3,600 visitors coming together to enjoy a festive day with games, rides, shops, international cuisines, various entertainment, and a
―tour‖ of the world provided by the diverse nationalities of the NIST families. The change in event time, from a day event to an evening event,
seemed very favorable to our visitors. The theme of this year‘s festival was Same Same but Different.

Loads of games and rides were available for children of all ages including a ferris wheel, carousel, foam party, euro bungy, bouncy castles and
more. Entertainment was provided by NIST students and teachers including rock bands and cultural dances from the Philippines, Japan, Korea,
German, India and Thailand.

In addition, the country booths in the MPH were, as always, a popular highlight of the fair. Many thanks go to Aotearoa, Australia, Finland, India,
Korea, Norway, Sweden, Taiwan, Thailand and the USA for their efforts. In addition, several of the groups also ran outdoor booths and raised sig-
nificant funds for the school – these included Japan, Netherlands, Philippines, the German Speaking Group, Korea, Thailand, and the USA.

Over 50 retail outlets selling everything from jewelry, to silk handbags and clothing, to Thai crafts, children‘s books, and toys set-up stalls on the
day. Over 50 different food vendors served a selection of international cuisine, including Mexican, British, American, Australian, Indian, Korean
and Thai dishes. Also present were community and environmental groups – Plant-A-Tree-Today, SCAD, and Amnesty International. There were also
a few student-run charity groups that helped raising money for Haiti relief, Habitat for Humanity, and Malaria Prevention.

Our sincere appreciation goes to our sponsors, staff, parents, teachers and students for all the hard work and support they dedicated to make our
International Day 2010 possible and very successful one. Particular thanks go to our major sponsor, La-Z-Boy, who provided a special privilege to
all NIST visitors, and our grand sponsors: Beauty Gems Group (Thailand), Bumrungrad Hospital, Fitness First (Thailand) Limited, GajaPuri Resort
and Spa , Novotel Lotus Hotel, Mulberry Spa, Pinnacle Hotels, Resorts and Spa, Reckitt Benckiser, S&P Syndicate PCL,Thai Airways Interna-
tional,Villa Maroc (Invision Hospitality), Woongjin Coway, and Unilever Thai Trading Limited.

The money raised from the NIST International Day 2010 will be put towards the school‘s next big project to install the tennis court cover and pitch.
As of now, the country baskets from silent auction alone raised B40, 850 – a direct result of the NIST community‘s hard work and donations.

NIST Alumnus Presents Sports Declaration to the IOC
On September 22, 2009, NIST alumnus Wataru Sado represented
the World Kid‟s Sport Summit and presented Jacques Rogge,
President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) , with a
Declaration at the IOC Headquarters in Lausanne, Switzerland.
The Declaration, a call by the world‟s new sporting generation to
spread the spirit of fair play across the world, was issued by the
Summit in Yokohama, Japan on 21 August.

Wataru was at NIST from 2006 to 2008 and is from the class of
2016. Now living in Yokohama and in fifth-grade, Wataru read
aloud the declaration and then presented it to Mr Rogge. Follow-
ing the reading of the Declaration, a fellow representative, Me-
gumi Terasaki, a sixth-grade student from Tsukuba, presented the IOC president with a monument that symbol-
ises children from five continents joining hands to make a better world together. Mr. Rogge mentioned that he
would add the declaration to the Olympic Museum.

“I am very pleased to know that the Sports Summit was held and the declara-
tion was adopted by the young generation based on the spirit of fair play. As
you know, the meaning of sports is not only to win or make good records.
Instead, like Judo which is originated in Japan, it is the opportunities to learn
manners and to respect others. By spreading this idea to the people in the
world, I believe we can contribute to World peace. I hope the kids participated
in the summit will continue the Olympic Movement in their countries and
regions from now on. Your accomplishment,
the declaration will be displayed in the special space in the Olympic Mu-
seum,” he said.

For his part, Wataru said, “I am very excited to present the declaration which
was adopted by the kids from 16 countries and regions in the world to Presi-
dent Rogge. It was a very important day for me!”

The Declaration was written at the World Kid‟s Summit which took place in
Yokohama as part of the celebrations of the 150th anniversary of the opening of the Yokohama Port. The stu-
dents attending the summit wrote:

We, the Participants, at the World Kids’ Sports Summit in Yokohama, will work to create a better future by pro-
moting the spirit of fair play which we have learned through sports. This spirit of fair play will not only be limited
to the world of sport, but will include relations with society, earth and people to solve various issues that the
world is now facing.

They also came up with five Action Guidelines.

Action Guidelines
1. We, on this earth, will confront
environmental issues by respecting
others and cooperating with friends
through sports!
2. We will cultivate healthy bodies
and minds, through sports, to lead
vigorous lives!
3. We will develop new friendship
through sports, by better under-
standing each other’s culture, to
build a more peaceful world!
4. We will challenge everything with
a smile and confidence to convey
the importance of doing one’s best
to people all around the world
through sports!
5. We will follow the rules, and per-
form our best in every competition,
to spread the spirit of fair play
across the world!
