In a normal mode of operation, the light phase (solvent)

and heavy phase (feed) liquids are pumped countercurrently into the extraction column. The heavy phase
will enter the top of the column and flow downwards
while the light phase will enter the bottom of the column

HIS Liquid-Liquid Extraction Unit (Model: BP 60) has been designed for student demonstration on a
liquid-liquid extraction and solvent recovery processes. This mobile unit basically consists of an extraction
system and a solvent recovery system. The extraction system consists of a DN50 packed column, feed
tanks, feed metering pumps and collection tanks. The solvent recovery system consists of a DN50 packed column,
a reboiler, a condenser, and a distillate tank. Sample points are provided at key positions around the unit allowing
students to conduct liquid-liquid extraction experiments and solvent regeneration.

and flow upwards due to density differences. The raffinate

will emerge at the bottom while the extract will emerge
at the top of the extraction column. When steady state
is reached, students will collect both extract and raffinate
samples to determine the extraction efficiency.
