Prognosis

Community acquired pneumonia remains an important cause of mortality in

developed nations. Short term mortality is related to severity of illness. The
mortality rate is low. In patients hospitalized for pneumonia, risk of death is
increased during the year after hospital discharge because it varies to some
extent by pathogen. The highest rates are with gram negative bacteria and CAMRSA. However these pathogens are relatively infrequent causes of pneumonia.
S. pneumonia remains the most common cause of death in patients with CAP.
Typical pathogens such as Mycoplasma have a good prognosis. Mortality is
higher in patients who do not respond to initial empiric antibiotics and in those
whose treatment regimen does not conform to guidelines. It is also more likely to
be fatal in the elderly or with those chronic medical conditions or weakened
immune system. However, most people with pneumonia improve after 3 to 5
days of antibiotic treatment, but a mild cough and fatigue can last longer up to a
month. Patients who required treatment in a hospital may take longer to see its
improvement.
