ts been described as breathtakingly beautiful, with pristine grasslands, dense

woods and several sparkling lakes. The 775-acre site off Hickory Lane in
Berkeley will soon belong to Ocean County. The county will pay $11.2 million

for the New Jersey Pulverizing Company site, which is located adjacent to the Ocean
County Utilities Authoritys central treatment plant off Hickory Lane. The money
for the purchase will come from the countys Natural Lands Trust Fund. K. Hovnanian once planned to build as many as 4,500 homes on the property, which has been
owned by the sand mining company for nearly 100 years.

TOMS RIVER A state appeals court has upheld a

$761,000 fraud verdict against Township Council Vice
President John Sevas Sevastakis, saying he defrauded a Toms River homeowner during a home rebuilding
project, forged the property owners signature on a
building permit application, and lied to township building officials about the work.
Sevastakis, 49, who owns Sevas Builders, a Toms
River-based construction company, is a Republican
councilman who first was elected to an at-large seat on
the council in 2003. In March he announced that he
would not be seeking a fourth, three-year term on the
council. At the time, Sevastakis said he chose not to run

Results of two polls released this week, the ABC

The purchase was greeted enthusiastically
by Berkeley Mayor Carmen A. Amato Jr., who
attended Wednesdays public hearing on the
purchase. The freeholders voted 5-0 to buy the
property.
This is a great purchase and huge victory
for our community in our effort to stop overdevelopment, Amato said. Berkeleys Township
Council voted unanimously to support the pur-

developed, it would have put an enormous
strain on township services and infrastructure.
Developer K. Hovnanian initially proposed
building 1,600 homes on the Pulverizing Company site in 2001. But under pressure from the
advocacy group Save Barnegat Bay, political
sentiment in town turned against the proposal.
The company resorted to a builders remedy lawsuit, arguing that its plans should move
