FIGURING OUT FRANCIS

Wildly popular but utterly unpredictable, the pope sometimes
makes life difficult for U.S. church leaders, Bishop OConnell says

More than a million people from all

over the world are expected to attend
Pope Francis historic outdoor Mass
Sept. 27 in Philadelphia. But the leader of
the Diocese of Trenton will not be among
them.
Bishop David M. OConnell, whose
diocese sits just across the Delaware
River from the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, tentatively is scheduled to do on-air
commentary for the local CBS affiliate,
CBS 3, whose studio is located a mile
away from where the pope will be.
Nor is he on the guest list for the popes
visit to New York City earlier in the week.
The events there include a multi-religious prayer service Friday at ground zero, where dozens of people from the Diocese of Trenton perished at the hands of
Islamic terrorists in 2001.
Its an opportunity for me, OConnell said of his commentating role in Philadelphia, to make sure the right thing is
said.
It proved a telling comment, coming
in the context of an exclusive interview
with the Asbury Park Press in which
OConnell made it plain that it isnt simSee POPE, Page 14A

ATLANTIC CITY Is a gas tax hike in our future? It

looked that way for a few fleeting moments last week.
One top Republican lawmaker was ready to vote to
hike the gas tax. The top two Democrats were supportive of exempting more households from estate and inheritance taxes or eliminating the levies altogether.
That, however, is about as far as things got at the
New Jersey Business Summit, where a dozen chambers
of commerce and 20-plus organizations convened over
two days ending Friday, in a bid to get beyond gridlock
on key policy and fiscal issues.
A coveted breakthrough, however, was elusive.
In the end, lawmakers didnt budge much from their
earlier viewpoints on infrastructure, taxes, regulations
and workforce readiness. They did agree to keep the
conversation going with summit organizers after leaving the Borgata conference room.
Assembly Minority Leader Jon Bramnick appeared
more declarative than he had in the past in committing
