Text Book
Internetworking with TCP/IP Vol. 1: Principles, Protocols, and Architecture (6th Edition) by Douglas Comer (Prentice-Hall, 2014) will be used as the text book.
Lecture notes for the course will be in the homepage of CMPT-471 at CourseCentral
under the directory Notes.
Assignments
Assignments and solutions will be in the homepage of CMPT-471 at CourseCentral under the directory Assignments. Most of the assignments will include the work in the
Networking Lab. Some assignments may have greater weight than others.
Assignments are due at the end of the the lecture on the due date. Late assignments will
be accepted only in case of provable illness (a medical excuse from a doctor). In all other
cases, late assignments will not be accepted and will not receive partial credit.
Midterm Test
The Midterm test is scheduled on Oct. 21 in class (50 min.) and will cover the
material from the first six weeks of the course.
Final Exam
The Final Exam will be on Dec. 18 and will cover all parts of the course. Note that
the course will not cover all chapters of the text book. Also note that the Final Exam will
1

be a two hour exam and you have two hours to write even though it has been scheduled
in a three hour slot.
Academy Honesty
Students should respect the SFU intellectual honesty policies and code of student conduct
(please refer to http://www.sfu.ca/policies/Students/index.html for details).
Submitted answers should be your own work. A student may receive zero credit for a
problem or an assignment if the answer is substantially identical to that of another student
or a known source. Violation of academic honesty may result in a more severe penalty
than zero credit for an assignment, a test, and/or an exam.
Networking II Lab Facilities
For this course there is a small virtual internet (intranet) comprised of servers cs-vnl and
seasons, and 20 client workstations. The internet is divided into five networks (Ethernet),
with each workstation connected to one or more of the networks. The servers and all
workstations are connected to one Ethernet, with network id 192.168.0.0/24. There are
four additional Ethernets with network ids 172.16.0.0, 172.17.0.0, 172.18.0.0, and
172.19.0.0. Four of the multi-interface workstations work as routers to route packets
between the networks. Please refer to
http://www.cs.sfu.ca/CC/CSILUnix/network lab faq.html
on how to access the virtual internet. The diagram of the virtual internet is given in Figure 1. There will be tutorials to introduce you to the Networking Lab. in the instructors
office hours. Details will be announced in class and by email.
Cmpt471 is over-enrolled for the number of workstations in the lab. For some assignments,
the due dates may be staggered, with specific due date for individuals or groups chosen by
the instructor. The details will be given in class and by email if this becomes a necessary.
