A. GENERAL
A site visit was conducted from September 3 to 6, 2013 for inspection of existing
condition of the 69 inch diameter Rising Main.
A temporary closure of 24 hours was provided by the Client to carry out the
inspection. However, due to damaged hoisting system of the approach channel
gates, water flow into the Pump Station could not be stopped and hence, at the
time of inspection, the Common Header was full of water. Therefore, the
inspection had to be started from the outlet point of the Rising Main.
B. Common Header
The Common Header was replaced in 1990 with inch thick pipes. Although
the Common Header could not be inspected due to filled in water, however,
the condition of the discharge elbow was very good as shown in the attached
Figures 1 and 2. Therefore, it is recommended that the Common Header
should be painted both inside and outside with approved paint after proper
sand blasting.
C. 69 Inch Diameter Rising Main
The inspection team of above mentioned three mechanical engineers had
conducted the inspection of the Rising Main along with three helpers from the
Pump Station maintenance staff. An ultrasonic digital steel plate thickness
measuring gauge as shown in Figure ----- was used to check the existing
thickness of the Rising Main at different locations along its periphery and
length. The original thickness of the Rising Main was 9.5 mm. The existing
thickness of the Rising Main was found minimum at the bottom and it
becomes relatively better while moving towards its top from both sides.
Similarly, the condition and thickness of the Rising Main was found better
close to the outlet point but it becomes worse while moving towards the Pump
Station.
The thicknesses measured during the subject inspection are shown in Figures
3 to 25 attached hereunder.
Thicknesses of the Rising Main measured from inside at different
locations from Outlet to Pump Station
1. 7.5 mm
2. 7.2 mm

14. 4.2 mm
15. 2.3 mm
Thicknesses of the Rising Main measured from outside at top near
Outlet of the Rising Main
1. 8.5 mm
F. Recommendations
In the light of above inspection, existing thickness of the Rising Main and its
past history of water leakage, it is recommended that the 69 inch Rising Main
should also be replaced along with the pumps to ensure its 40 to 50 years life.
However, the Rising Main should be protected from corrosion by applying
proper coating, lining and cathodic protection systems.
Proper depth of cover should also be provided for the Rising Main as about 4
to 6 inch cover was found near the outlet point.
