Law.Thesethreeequationsarereallythesame;ifyouknowtwoofthevalues,
youcanfindthethirdvalue.
Inmostsettings,bothathomeandinmanufacturing,voltageoftenremains
thesame.Youroutletsathomearearound120volts,butinmanufacturing,the
voltageisoftenmuchhigher,from480voltsuptoseveralthousandvolts.
TheequationsofOhmsLaware:voltageequalscurrenttimesresistance,currentequals
voltagedividedbyresistance,andresistanceequalsvoltagedividedbycurrent.

Theamountofvoltagepresentisoftenthebiggestfactortoconsiderwhendealingwithshock
andarcflash.
Ifseveralthousandvoltsarepresent,theresistanceofthebodywillhavelittleeffectonthe
amountofcurrentflowingthroughthebody.Thecurrentwillbeenoughtoshockorkillyouno
matterwhat.
Inthefirstexample,noticethatwithahighenoughvoltage,even1000ohmsworthof
resistancewillstillbeenoughtoshockandinjureyou.
Inanarcflash,air(whichisnormallyaninsulatorwithhighresistancetotheflowofelectricity)
breaksdownandlosesitsresistance,becomingconductive.Theverylowresistancecausesthe
currenttobeveryhigh,causingthedangersofanarcflash.
