A. Background of Study
The world is not interesting, if we know that all of the things in this world are same. The
difference that already existing makes the world is colorful. The difference among us is should
be the reason for us to stay in a unity. This couldnt be denied that the difference is existing in the
middle of us is the reality that we have to deal with in harmony. It could be happened in all
aspect in our lives. And one of the examples is love to someone. From the people says that love
can be the first sources of family, so we have to realize that from the love with someone we can
go to marry with someone that we love.
Marriage is the part of our life, we cannot deny that all of the people in the world want to
marry, but some people sometimes with his/her reason choose to live alone without decide to
marry. We also dont know who will be the part of our life is. Because we know that the world is
wide and so many people in there with the different personality, background of life, religion and
characteristic in each people. Every day we meet the people until we find someone that will be
the part of our life or we can say we find our love and soul mate to undergo the life as a wife and
husband until we have a child and become a family in our home. Love is a strong feeling that the
people have with another person, animal, or something that make her/his satisfied about what
her/his deeply want. (Dr.Paul Hauck 1995:29)
From this situation we realize that love can come to us unexpectedly that will become the
source of family and because of it we also dont know who will become to be our future wife or
future husband. We might find our mate in a good or bad personality or we might find our mate
in a different religion because the world has so many religions too. From these facts we have to

realize that living in this world that full of diversity and make the world feel colorful. From this
condition and situation we realize that we live in the pluralism. And there are some views about
the differences of pluralism. Based on the phenomenology, pluralism terminology religion in a
short meaning is the reality that the religions show all of kind of tradition and also the pluralism
that appear in each branched of religions (John Hick).
(Andrew J. DuBrin, 2007:381). The true meaning of valuing diversity is to respect and
enjoy a wide range of cultural and individual differences, thereby including everybody, and also
this pluralism is describes in the movie of My Name Is Khan, there are so many pluralism that
has showed to us as the audiences. And the researcher is interesting to take up about the
pluralism in the religion as describe in this movie as the Rizwan Khan that embrace Islam
religion and Mandira is Hinduism. They decide to marry and life as a family. This phenomenon
in this movie is very interesting because so far as we know that Islam is refusing the marrying in
different religion, but in this movie Rizwan Khan as the Moslem and Mandira as the people that
embracing Hinduism, they finally live together as a family. In the eyes of Allah, everybody is
same in the society of religion there are no specials right because of the birth (J.Estlin Carpenter
via Harold Coward 1992:126).
As the researcher this problem that has showed from the movie My Name Is Khan
especially the marriage with different religion becomes a good topic to discuss, because this
phenomenon is still happening in the reality in our life and even becomes hot issues in the
society. As the researcher this phenomenon doesnt observe of the Islamic, Christian, Catholic,
Hindu, or Buddha views but try to neutral as the people that understanding about pluralism and
discrepancy as a human life. And According to Gusdur the former of the Indonesian President

said that no matter what your religion and your ethnic, as long as you do the good things for
every people, they never asked about religion that your embrace (K.H. Abdurrahman Wahid).

B. Problem of Statement

To get the objective study of this problem of statement about the movie of My Name Is
Khan the question is aroused:
1. Why Rizwan Khan as a Moslem and Mandira that embrace Hinduism still deciding to

marry, eventhough they know that they have a different religion?

C. Scope of study
The researcher try to find out the responds of the student of English literature in UIN
Yogyakarta after watching the movie My Name Is Khan especially the marriage of Rizwan Khan
and Mandira that has a different religion in a perspective of Pluralism.
D. Significance of Study
This research can be the contribution to the general society in their perspective of the
marriage with the different religion that has already happened in the middle of society, how we
have reaction about that with the perspective of pluralism.
E. Objective of Study
The researcher tries to give information to the reader through this movie. How their
perspective if they found the case like this one, for the example the marriage of Rizwan Khan
and Mandira that has different religion. With the perspective of pluralism the researcher tries to
make the reader understanding about the marriage of Rizwan Khan and Mandira.

syndrome in the movie My Name is Khan. The writer of this thesis is Fitri Wulan as a member
of Maulana Malik Ibrahim State Islamic University of Malang.

Tutut Murdiyanti (2010). PERSEPSI TENTANG ISLAM PADA FILM MY NAME IS

KHAN (Studi pada Penonton Film My Name is Khan Berkewarganegaraan Amerika Serikat).
The second thesis with title of Persepsi tentang islam pada film My name is Khan
(Studi pada Penonton Film My Name is Khan Berkewarganegaraan Amerika Serikat).
And she is a member of faculty Communication Science.
The Third thesis from Gurravu Naveen (2012) and he is from the IIT Gandhinagar. This
is the Final essay on April 19, 2012 with the title Humanities: My Name Is Khan and I am not
a Terrotist. In his abstracts; Islam the second preached religion in the world after Christianity
and Muslims are the adherent of Islam. Media is a huge role modern society as it has the
authenticity of information to the masses and it moulds perception of the viewers of the reality.
In facts it creates a religion of its own, wherein viewers are its followers having a set of beliefs

and notions (or rather developing) to look in to the reality. The event of 9/11 divided the timeline
of a race (with respect of Muslims) into two time intervals, before and after 9/11. Most of the
movie My Name Is Khan was shot in Los Angeles, United stated. This paper gives insights
into the movie My Name Is Khan and the reality of an entire race (Muslims) with respect to
social discrimination, portraying them as terrorists and threats them as others after 9/11
incident.

The fourth prior research (Robitotul Asna) that I have found in internet was the Seminar
Literature by Robitotul Asna with his research is The Struggle of Rizwan Khan Againts the
Stereotype of Muslim is a Terorrist in My Name is Khan the Movie. And also he is the one
of the member of English Department Faculty of Humanities Airlangga University Surabaya.

The fifth prior research that I have found in internet was Representasi Aqidah Islam
dalam Film My name is Khan (Studi Semiotik tentang Representasi Aqidah Islam dalam
Film My name is Khan). And this researched by Dian Dwi Agustini, she is from the one of
the college in East Java with the name of her college is FISIP UPN Veteran Surabaya. Her
faculty is Communication science.
