Grinding of Nimonic Exhaust Valve Spindle

Dear Sirs,
Lately we have been receiving reports of some difficulties
being experienced when grinding the Nimonic exhaust valve
spindles.
The difficulties are mainly caused by the clogging up of the
grinding stone, which means that it has to be dressed more
often.
In order to facilitate the grinding of Nimonic valves, ChrisMarine AB has, in close cooperation with us, developed a set of
special accessories, and prepared supplementary grinding
instructions, a copy of which is enclosed.
The new accessories are included on Chris-Marine grinding
machines for new engines, and can be retrofitted to ChrisMarine grinding machines already in service.
For a quotation and time of delivery, please contact our Diesel
Service dept., one of our licensees or Chris-Marine AB.

Yours faithfully,
MAN B&W Diesel A/S

New Wear-Coating on Exhaust Valve Spindle Stem
Dear Sirs,
We have received reports that the Cr-plating on the exhaust
valve spindle has, in some cases, proved inadequate in service.
These reports, which were mainly related to the wearresistance of the plating, include a few incidents of lack of
bonding (peeling off) on Nimonic 80A spindles.
Some years ago, in anticipation of increasing costs of chromeplating and the decreasing availability of works capable of
carrying out the chrome-plating process, MAN B&W Diesel began
to investigate alternative coatings.
After successful production and service tests, we are now able
to introduce a new thermally sprayed coating which provides
excellent bonding strength and unique wear properties.
The new coating consists of a highly wear-resistant mixture of
a metalcarbide and a superalloy which is applied by the socalled HVOF (High Velocity Oxygen Fuel) process.
After being machined to provide a suitable surface finish, the
thickness of the coating will be 0.25 mm.
Due to the surface characteristics of the new coating, the
matching sealing rings had to be redesigned in order to ensure
an adequate service life. These new sealing rings may only be
used for spindles with HVOF coating, and such spindles will be
marked "HVOF" at the top of the spindle stem.

K/L/S-MC/MC-C
Cylinder Condition Report
New Measuring Points for Cylinder Liner Wear
Dear Sirs,
When introducing the L-MC/MCE type engines in the beginning of
the eighties, we transferred the definitions for measuring
points for cylinder wear from the L-GB engines.
The definitions of the eight levels were:
Pos.
Pos.
Pos.
Pos.
Pos.

1-4 coincide with the piston rings in TDC.

5
coincides with the level of the lubricating oil
quills.
6
the position at which the top piston ring reaches
the highest piston speed.
7
just above the scavenge ports.
8
below the 4th ring in BDC.

On the L-MC engines, the above levels give a reasonably even

distribution of the measuring points, and thus a good picture
of the wear profile along the running surface.
However, on the K-MC engines and, in particular, on the
S-MC engines, the above positions are not optimal, and we have
therefore decided to adjust the measuring points accordingly.
In order to cover the long stroke of the S-engines, we have
found it beneficial to introduce three additional measuring
points. At the same time, we have omitted the position that
corresponds to the highest piston speed as, in some engine
sizes, this position is very close to the level of the
lubricating oil quills.

We enclose our sheet "Measuring points for cylinder liner

wear", which specifies the measuring points for each engine
type. We recommend that you introduce the new measuring points
and that you correct the templates for cylinder liner measuring
accordingly.
We should further like to introduce our modified version of the
sheet "Cylinder Condition Report". We propose that you use this
sheet in connection with every piston overhaul so as to ensure
the recording of the most relevant parameters.
You are most welcome to send copies of these cylinder condition
reports to our office, where the reports will be used in the
statistical follow-up on the engines.

MC Engine Pistons
Engine types 50-90 MC/MCE
Dear Sirs,
Fretting between the piston crown and piston rod has been observed on some engines in service, and in rare cases fine cracks
have appeared. However, we have received no reports of the
service of the engine being interrupted for this reason.
The intention with this Service Letter is to inform you of the
appearance of the fretting and to outline how fretting can be
remedied by machining the piston crown and the piston rod.
The methods and remedies outlined are to be taken into consideration only in connection with routine overhaul of pistons
and do not call for any immediate action.
The two types of damage that have occurred can be remedied as
follows:
'DPDJHGVXUIDFHVZLWKRXWFUDFNV
Any damage to the mating surfaces of the piston crown and
piston rod should be removed by machining. The total amount
of material machined off must be less than 1 mm. Furthermore, a relief groove and a tapered assembling surface must
be introduced on the piston crown, Fig. 1.
'DPDJHGVXUIDFHVZLWKVPDOOFUDFNV
If cracks have developed, they can in most cases be machined
off, and an intermediate spacer ring of special hardened
steel can be installed, as shown in Fig. 2. The contact face
of the piston crown is to be machined with a relief groove
and a tapered assembling surface.

The spacer rings can be supplied in 5 mm thickness (50 bore

engines = 4 mm), and consequently the maximum to be machined
off the piston crown and rod combined is 6 mm (50 bore
engines = 5 mm).
If more extensive machining becomes necessary, various repair
solutions are available. In this case please contact MAN B&W
Diesel A/S in Copenhagen for further assistance.
0RXQWLQJRIQHZRUUHFRQGLWLRQHGSLVWRQFURZQRQPRGLILHGURG
If the landing surface on the piston rod is in good condition
and has been machined less than 1 mm (original measurements
in Fig. 1), a piston crown with original dimensions can be
mounted.
If the above conditions are not met, the rod is to be
machined to 5 mm below the original measurement (50 bore
engines = 4 mm) and a spacer ring of special hardened steel
is to be installed on the rod in order to restore the rod to
its original dimensions.
In all cases it is essential to ensure that the height of the
intermediate spacer corresponds exactly to the height of the
material removed in order not to affect the compression and
maximum combustion pressures in service. For original reference
measurements, see the Table in Fig. 1.
If repair becomes necessary, please contact the engine builder,
one of our Service Centres or Authorised Repair Shops, or MAN
B&W Diesel A/S in Copenhagen.

Fuel Valve Opening Pressure

K/L/S-MC/MCE, K/L-GF(CA), L-GB(E)
Dear Sirs,
Reference is made to our Service Letter SL87-224/CEE of
October 1987 concerning altered tolerances for the opening
pressures, and the introduction of an exchangeable spring
guide for adjusting the opening pressure.
In the above-mentioned Service Letter we recommended that, if
the opening pressure falls below the permissible value, the
upper spring disc on the thrust spindle complete should be
replaced by a new specific disc which would increase the opening pressure by about 30 bar.
However, practical experience has shown that since the thickness of the original disc is not always known, an adjustment
of the opening pressure based on replacement of the original
disc with the new disc can lead to an opening pressure which
is either higher or lower than that intended; depending on the
thickness of the original disc.
To eliminate this problem, we recommend that additional discs
are used together with the original disc. This will ensure
that the pressure increases according to that intended, regardless of the thickness of the original disc.
