TheEmbeddedSystemsEngineeringsectionatDTUComputeislookingforaPhDstudentora
postdoctoralresearcherintheareaofmethodsandtoolsfortheanalysisandoptimizationofsafety
criticalsystems.ThepositionispartofthelargeEuropeanprojectEMC2,EmbeddedMultiCoresystems
forMixedCriticalityapplicationsindynamicandchangeablerealtimeenvironments,with99academic
andindustrialpartnersfromalloverEurope.Inthisproject,wehaveclosecollaborationswithTTTech,
SysGo,VolvoandDanfoss.Thestudentorresearcherisexpectedtoparticipateintheprojectmeetings
andvisit,forupto6months,oneoftheindustrialpartners.
Asafetycriticalcyberphysicalsystemisasystemthatwillnotendangerhumanlifeortheenvironment.
Manysafetycriticalsystemsarealsorealtime:inarealtimesystemthecorrectnessofthesystem
behaviordependsnotonlyonthelogicalresultsofthecomputations,butalsoonthephysicalinstantat
whichtheseresultsareproduced.Amixedcriticalitysystemisanintegratedsuiteofhardware,
operatingsystemandmiddlewareservicesandapplicationsoftwarethatsupportstheexecutionofsafety
critical,missioncritical,andnoncriticalsoftwarewithinasingle,securecomputingplatform.For
example,theembeddedsystemsinavehicleformamixedcriticalitysystem,astheyimplementsafety
criticalapplications(e.g.,ABS)andnoncriticalapplications(e.g.,diagnosticssoftware).Economic
pressuresandmulticorearchitecturesaredrivingtheintegrationofmixedcriticalityapplicationsontothe
sameplatform.Certificationstandardsrequirethatsafetyfunctionsofdifferentcriticalitylevelsbe
protected(or,isolated),sotheycannotinfluenceeachother.

Wedevelopmethodsandtools(whichrequiredevelopingcomplexsoftware)fortheanalysisand
optimizationofmixedcriticalitysystems.Wewouldliketocontinuetheworkwehavedonesofarinthe
RECOMPandEMC2projects,seetheseslidesandtheintroductiontothisPhDthesis.Thegrouphas
workedwithpartitionedarchitectures,whichusetemporalandspatialseparationmechanismstoensure
thatapplicationsofdifferentcriticalitylevelsdonotinterferewitheachother.Attheprocessorlevel,we
haveproposedanalysisandoptimizationmethodsandtoolstodeterminethemappingoftasksto
processors,theassignmentoftaskstopartitions,thesequenceandsizeofthepartitiontimeslotson
eachprocessorandthescheduletables,suchthatalltheapplicationsareschedulableandthe
developmentandcertificationcostsareminimized.Thisworkwasvalidatedbothonautomotivecase
studiesandanaerospacecasestudy,incollaborationwithNASAsJetPropulsionLaboratoryin
Pasadena,California.Consideringthetrendtowardstheinternetofthingsandsystemsofsystems,he
wehavealsoaddressedEthernetbasedprotocols,suchasTTEthernet,whichiswellsuitedformixed
criticalityapplications.Wehaveproposedmethodsandtoolsfortheanalysisanddesignoptimizationof
TTEthernetnetworksusedtotransmitmixedcriticalitymessages.Thisworkwasdonejointlywiththe
TTTech.
