Evan Bradley

Lenape wins first game of season, 3-1

Years of service culminates in highest

Lenape midfielder Andrew Lipski prepares to make a sliding tackle on Cherry Hill East senior Zach
Fox during last weeks boys soccer game. Lenape went on to defeat Cherry Hill East, 3-1, for its
first win of the season.

Mt. Laurel resident and Lenape

High School senior Evan Bradley
has spent the past 12 years performing numerous service projects.
On Sept. 19, community members honored him as he received
the highest designation possible
in Boy Scouting.
Bradley was officially named
an Eagle Scout during his Court
of Honor ceremony on Saturday,
Sept. 19, at the Marlton Fieldhouse. Bradley, along with fellow
Troop No. 100 member Jake
Lazarow, received the designation
in front of family, friends and
community members.
The achievement was the culmination of 12 years of Scouting
for Bradley. He recalled joining
the Cub Scouts while in first
grade. He has been a part of
Scouting ever since, progressing
through Cub Scouts and Boy
Scouts to reach the level of Eagle
Scout.
I like the camaraderie of
being around an organization

thats centered on youth but is

over to connect youth leadership
with adult leadership, Bradley
said.
To receive the designation of
Eagle Scout, Bradley had to complete a number of tasks. Eagle
Scouts must progress through all
of the Boy Scout rankings, earn
21 merit badges, serve in a leadership position within his troop,
complete a service project and
more.
For Bradleys project, he
worked with the Gift of Life Family House in Philadelphia, which
provides a temporary home for
families of transplant patients
who receive treatment at different transplant centers around the
region.
I believe that it is very important to stand up for those people
and embrace people going
through hard instances like that,
Bradley said.
Bradleys project had two
parts. First, he helped collect food
to donate to the houses pantry.

Drones should be restricted

N.J. law would be good, but federal government needs to step in, too

here are laws in place to protect peoples privacy. For example, it is not legal for someone
to walk onto your property and peer
into your ground-floor windows. It is
not legal for someone to place a ladder
against your house to climb and look
through your second-floor windows. It
is not legal for someone to walk on
your property and take photographs
or video.
However, the law becomes a little
unclear when you take the situations
above and replace the trespassing person in question with a drone.
New Jersey, thankfully, is trying to
clear up any ambiguity.
State Sen. Richard Codey is proposing legislation that would require
drones sold in New Jersey to be
equipped with technology that would

use of drones? Share your thoughts on
this, and other topics, through a letter to
the editor.

keep them from flying above 500 feet

and from restricted air space.
Before commercial aviation and
other technology wer around, a property owner was entitled to everything
on his or her land, including the soil
beneath and the air above. Naturally,
that changed over time, so as to not
prevent airplanes from flying overhead.
Now, though, the availability and affordability of drones has brought into
question just what should and should
not be allowed.
We agree with Codey that we dont

want someone flying a drone over our

house, or on our property, for that matter.
We like our privacy, and feel we are
entitled to it.
We also agree that, on a much larger
scale, drones can present safety issues as they did at the U.S. Open tennis tournament, a University of Kentucky football game and sightings
around Newark Liberty Airport recently.
And while we hope our legislators
pass regulations on drones within our
state, we hope the federal government
takes steps to pass federal bans and restrictions on drones, so people cant
just go over the state line to purchase a
drone without the restrictive technology and then fly it over our house with
no regard for our privacy or safety.

Dig Pink with Lenape volleyball teams

By BRIGIT BAUMA
The Sun
In volleyball, side-out means to regain control of the ball. One Lenape High
School senior and volleyball player, along
with the LHS volleyball team, is using her
passion for volleyball along with her drive
to help cancer research by hosting a
fundraiser to help breast cancer patients
regain control of their lives through the
Side-Out Foundation.
Senior Brooke Porter and the LHS volleyball team is hosting the 2nd Dig Pink
Rally to raise money for breast cancer research. The Dig Pink Rally will host two
volleyball games, varsity and junior varsity, against Seneca High School in the
Lenape south gym on Wednesday, Oct. 14 at
4 p.m.

Basically, people should expect a really

big decked-out event and a really good
game. The game is going to be dedicated to
those who are suffering from and have survived breast cancer, and those who have
passed away from it, Porter said.
The Side-Out Foundation, founder of
Dig Pink, is an organization that teams
with the volleyball community to inspire
science and hope in the match against
breast cancer. The Side-Out Foundation
organizes these events and fundraising
campaigns to raise money toward clinical
trials, specifically for patients with stage 4
breast cancer, the most advanced form of
the disease and the least funded area of research.
The LHS volleyball team held its first
Dig Pink Rally in 2013 when then-senior
Emily Sheehan was an ambassador for the

Side Out Foundation as well as organizer

of the event. For her efforts, Sheehan
earned the Community Service Award for
the Side-Out Foundation by getting the entire community involved, and she also won
the National Side-Out Foundation Award,
earning a banner for LHS.
Porter, inspired by Sheehan during her
sophomore year, decided to become a SideOut ambassador and bring the Dig Pink
Rally back to LHS this year, after last year
fell through, and make it a tradition for
years to come.
Since I am so passionate about volleyball, I think this is a perfect way to get volleyball and something that goes toward
breast cancer research together. I think
that is really a great way to raise awareplease see PORTERS, page 9

ness and get donations for a good
cause. And plus, having done it
before, I thought it would be cool
for me to take it over and make it
bigger, Porter said.
For this year, Porter is going
bigger by getting more people involved, including the student
body, administrators, athletic
leaders and the community.
So far, the volleyball team
members are going around collecting donations throughout the
school, the special education program is making flyers for the Dig
Pink Rally through its computer
applications class and local parents will be selling baked goods at
the rally to raise money.
Outside of school, Porter is
asking the community to come to
the Dig Pink Rally and support
the team. Or, if they cant attend,
they can donate money through

their online link at www.sideout.org/cb/campaigns/campaign/10510.

Porters goal for the Dig Pink
Rally is to raise at least $1,500.
With almost 2,000 students at
LHS, Porter said it could be easily
accomplished.
For the game, expect a gym full
of pink, a great game and an atmosphere of support, all to help
the fight against breast cancer.
Porter said people should come
out for a good game, but also to
support those with all forms of
cancer. Porters grandmother is a
breast cancer survivor and her
grandfather passed away from
esophageal cancer.
A lot of people know someone
who has suffered from breast cancer, or cancer in general; it is a
personal thing. So people should
want to come out and support us,
and help us raise money to do
clinical trials for people with
stage 4 breast cancer because it is
an awful disease, Porter said.
The Dig Pink Rally will start at

4 p.m. in the LHS south gym, 235

Hartford Road in Medford, with
the varsity volleyball game first,
followed by the JV game around 5
p.m.
I want everyone to basically
feel a sense of community. Like
were all coming together; were
all doing something for a good
cause, and I want people to feel
good about themselves helping
others, Porter said.
And I also hope to beat Seneca
that day, she finished with a
laugh.
