Menorah Mania

East soccer drops a game to Lenape, 3-1

JFHA organizes potential Guinness

record-setting fundraiser on Oct. 18
By MIKE MONOSTRA

IF YOU GO

Cherry Hill residents will have

the chance to get into the Guinness Book of World Records and
raise money for local seniors.
Jewish Federation Housing Associates, an agency within the
Jewish Federation of Southern
New Jersey, is hosting Menorah
Mania on Sunday, Oct. 18 at the
Jewish Federation Annex on
Springdale Road. At the event,
visitors will take part in trying to
set a new Guinness World Record
for largest human menorah.
Alison Platt-Tarnopol previously served as president of the
Jewish Federation Housing Associates and has helped organize
this years event. She said the organization wanted to raise money
for the Jewish Federation Housing and felt attempting to set a
world record would be a unique
way to do it.
What we really wanted to do
was reach out to the community
and show them the needs of our
seniors, Platt-Tarnopol said.
There is no record for largest
human
Menorah.
Guinness
World Records will include
JFHAs attempt if it has at least
250 people participate.

When: Sunday, Oct. 18 from

12:30 to 3 p.m.
Where: Jewish Federation
Annex, 1721 Springdale Road in
Cherry Hill
Cost: $10 for adults and $5 for
children
To register: Visit
www.jshhs.org/content/menorah-mania.

The federations goal is to not

only raise money, but also raise
awareness about the organization
and the 350 seniors living in the
Saltzman, Bernard Dubin and
Gesher Houses.
Our goal is to help them as
much as we can, Platt-Tarnopol
said. We wanted to bring awareness not just to seniors but to the
entire community.
This fundraiser will be key to
providing services to the federations senior residents. In the
past, proceeds from fundraising
have provided programs and
services. The federation has been
able to purchase a wheelchair-accessible bus and hosts a variety of

Drones should be restricted

N.J. law would be good, but federal government needs to step in, too

here are laws in place to protect peoples privacy. For example, it is not legal for someone
to walk onto your property and peer
into your ground-floor windows. It is
not legal for someone to place a ladder
against your house to climb and look
through your second-floor windows. It
is not legal for someone to walk on
your property and take photographs
or video.
However, the law becomes a little
unclear when you take the situations
above and replace the trespassing person in question with a drone.
New Jersey, thankfully, is trying to
clear up any ambiguity.
State Sen. Richard Codey is proposing legislation that would require
drones sold in New Jersey to be
equipped with technology that would

keep them from flying above 500 feet

and from restricted air space.
Before commercial aviation and
other technology wer around, a property owner was entitled to everything
on his or her land, including the soil
beneath and the air above. Naturally,
that changed over time, so as to not
prevent airplanes from flying overhead.
Now, though, the availability and affordability of drones has brought into
question just what should and should
not be allowed.
We agree with Codey that we dont

want someone flying a drone over our

house, or on our property, for that matter.
We like our privacy, and feel we are
entitled to it.
We also agree that, on a much larger
scale, drones can present safety issues as they did at the U.S. Open tennis tournament, a University of Kentucky football game and sightings
around Newark Liberty Airport recently.
And while we hope our legislators
pass regulations on drones within our
state, we hope the federal government
takes steps to pass federal bans and restrictions on drones, so people cant
just go over the state line to purchase a
drone without the restrictive technology and then fly it over our house with
no regard for our privacy or safety.

Temple Emanuel schools named No Place for Hate

In a ceremony on Sunday, Sept. 20, the
students and staff at the Temple Emanuel
Cherry Hill Pre-School and Religious
School will celebrate their third designation as No Place for Hate, having completed
a year of anti-bias and anti-bullying programs.
Nancy Baron-Baer, regional director of
the Anti-Defamation League, will attend
the ceremony and present the school with
its official designation banner. To earn this
distinction, the school formed a No Place
for Hate committee, adopted a resolution
pledging to create a more inclusive community and implemented a number of
projects promoting respect for differences.
Temple Emanuel began the 2014-2015
school year with a project called Bee
Kind, Bee a Team.
After reading books to learn about how
bees accomplish their work by working as

a team, they did activities and had discussions on how they could work as a team to
celebrate diversity, promote respect for others and challenge bullying behavior.
For their second project, they participated in a student-parent Mitzvah Day. Before
setting off to improve the community
around them, the students participated in
lessons that taught why they should help
others and how important it is to embrace
our differences.
Their final project, Whats Jewish
About Butterflies? helped start a conversation about respecting people with different abilities.
Students participated in an art show, a
mental health expo and listened to two
local authors who spoke about mental
health issues and bullying.
This is the third year that Temple
Emanuels Pre-School and Religious School

will receive its designation banner. The

Temple Emanuel Pre-School and Religious
School is the first and only synagogue
school to receive the No Place for Hate designation in the ADLs tri-state region, and
is part of more than 220 schools and community organizations in the region currently participating in the No Place for
Hate program, following Gov. Ed Rendells
endorsement in 2006.

Time to get your

flu shot
By Freeholder Carmen Rodiriguez
The change of seasons leaves many
people feeling under
the weather. But you
can avoid getting
sick by getting a flu
shot. The Camden
County Department
of
Health
and
Human Services recommends that everyone get vaccinated this flu season,
especially children and seniors who
are most vulnerable.
The Freeholder Board has scheduled 15 convenient site locations
across Camden County for the 2015
Seasonal Influenza Immunization
Program in order to keep your family healthy this season. We encourage you to take advantage of this
beneficial service provided at no out
of pocket expense.
Men and women age 65 and older
are among the high priority
groups for annual shots. Pregnant
women and chronically ill people
are other high priority groups. Flu
shots are also recommended for people with weakened immune or cardiovascular systems, or with
chronic metabolic diseases, renal
dysfunction or blood disorders.
Youngsters aged nine and older
must be accompanied by an adult.
Children under nine need two shots,
a month apart, and should be seen
by a pediatrician. For uninsured
children, call CamCare at (856) 5419811 or the Bellmawr Health Center
at (856) 931-2700.
According to the CDC, flu activity
most commonly peaks in the U.S. between December and February.
However, seasonal flu activity can
begin as early as October and continue to occur as late as May. People
should begin getting vaccinated
soon after the flu vaccine becomes
available, to ensure that as many
people as possible are protected be-

fore flu season begins.

The flu cannot only
create challenges at
home, but it can have
a negative effect on
the workplace crippling businesses and
suffocating production. The flu can
spread
quickly
through any office and infect several
employees through the simple act of
coughing. If you are a business
owner, you should also encourage
your employees to get vaccinated. It
literally pays to get a flu shot.
You can also protect yourself and
your family from getting sick by
practicing basic prevention measures. Remember to cover your nose
and mouth with a tissue when you
cough or sneeze, and dispose of the
tissue. You can also cough or sneeze
into the bend of your arm. Wash
your hands often with soap and
water, especially after you cough or
sneeze. Teach your children that the
adequate amount of time to wash
your hands is the time it takes to
sing Happy Birthday twice. Alcohol-based hand sanitizers are also effective. Always avoid touching your
eyes, nose or mouth, as germs
spread this way. Do your best to try
to avoid contact with individuals
who are sick.
For a complete list of flu shot locations, visit www.camdencounty.com.
For other information, contact the
Department of Health and Human
Services at (800) 999-9045.

We offer things that will enhance their quality of life, PlattTarnopol said.
A lot of the funds the federation has raised in the past have

come from membership drives

and smaller fundraisers. PlattTarnopol said Menorah Mania is
the federations effort to reach out
to the entire community. The federation is hoping to get at least
500 people to participate.
Anybody can participate and
everyone is participating, PlattTarnopol said. Its shaping up to
be huge.
Platt-Tarnopol said she is hoping participants will learn more
about the federations senior residents and may reach out to volun-

teer in the future.

We also want to friend-raise,
she said.
Menorah Mania will kick off at
12:30 p.m. There will be a DJ providing music and some food
trucks selling lunch. The world
record attempt will take place
later in the afternoon. Participants will be assigned a spot on a
large menorah graphic laid out
on the ground. An aerial photo
will be taken once everyone is in
place.
The federation is asking participants to register for Menorah
Mania in advance. The cost is $10
per adult and $5 for children 12
years old and under. Businesses
and organizations can also sponsor one of the menorah candles.

Township receives grants

for tennis, pickleball courts
Baseball leagues also receive grants from open space fund
By MIKE MONOSTRA
The Sun

856-428-9505
509 Hopkins Rd., Haddonfield

Get your racquets ready. Cherry Hill Township is proceeding

with two separate tennis and
pickleball court projects after receiving grants from the Camden
County Open Space Preservation
Trust Fund last week.
Cherry Hill will receive two,
$25,000 Recreation Facility Enhancement Projects grants to
resurface the tennis courts at Locustwood Park and repurpose the
basketball courts at Lions Den
Park.
In addition, Cherry Hill American Little League and Cherry Hill

National Athletic League also received a $25,000 grant each. Township council approved these grant
applications during a meeting
last spring.
Construction is already underway on the Locustwood Park tennis court project.
The courts will benefit both
township residents and the Cherry Hill High School West community, as the Lions boys and girls
tennis teams use Locustwood as
their home court.
The court resurfacing was proposed after residents expressed
concerns about the safety of the
courts. Township director of
communications Bridget Palmer

said the project includes five

newly paved and expanded
courts, new fencing and other improvements at the site. The project will make the courts compliant with United States Tennis Association regulations and allow
the complex to host tournaments
in the future.
Palmer said the courts should
be completed later this fall.
They already started doing
surface work on the higher fourth
courts, she said.
The improvements at Lions
Den Park involved a repurposing
of the old basketball court into
three pickleball courts at the site.
Pickleball is a racquet sport combining the rules of badminton,
tennis and ping pong.
Palmer said the decision to
convert the site to pickleball was
made due to growing interest in
the sport.
The townships recreation department offers pickleball classes
throughout the year.
We offer an outdoor class during the warmer months and an
indoor class during the winter,
Palmer said.
The township is in the process
of securing a vendor and hopes to
have the courts ready for play
next spring.
We hope to start work on them
in late fall, Palmer said.
Two of the townships youth
baseball organizations will be
able to perform general field upgrades with their $25,000 grants.
Cherry Hill American will use
the grant to upgrade the baseball
fields at Brookfield Park, while
Cherry Hill National will upgrade its playing fields on Cooper
Landing Road.
The township is able to apply
for up to four Recreation Facility
Enhancement Projects grants per
year. The grant program requires
construction on all projects to be
completed within a year.
